I bought the game and am still not to happy with it. Its gonna take alot more polish to grab audiences here in the states IMO. Thats what i was implying.
Oh, sorry my bad. I can STFU now

Iron Maiden: "It was dead, but alive at the same time."
Actually, everything in the quote above is solely and entirely opinion, Ceph.Ceph wrote:The popcorn-enemy designs of Söldner X are boring, enemy formations are uninspired, weapons are too weak and the screen is overcrowded most of the time. And that's not opinion, that's fact.
The backgrounds and the music are nice, but the only thing that could make the game good as a whole would be a complete redesign, not just some tweaking.
Well for me this game is ok, and that's about it. Great games suck you in and keep you coming back for more, this game does not give me that incentive. I feel like im forcing myself to enjoy it at times. Some like it some don't, its a matter of opinion. One thing is true, most agree it needs some work, which makes it far from perfect.
The quote i made above means "Is this the best you got". Straight from the anouncer himself. Sony has to allow more shmups on PSN to see where this genre stands in today's gaming scene. Just dont use Soldner X to decide future releases if this is a test for modern shmups.

1942: Joint Strike got a B+ on 1up - the reviewer also said it was 'frustratingly difficult'. Ahahaha... Different reviewer to the one that gave Soldner-X a 'D', but still.
This game was obviously never going to please everyone, but it was better than I expected. I was dreading that it might turn out to be like X2, but it's much better than that. It doesn't feel too derivative of any one game and the chaining system is a bit different. The 'weapons protection' pick up is also a nice inclusion.
As for the weapons being too weak, once I realised that you shouldn't use the beam weapon in the first two levels, it got much easier. On level 1 all you have to do is switch back to the pulse weapon every time, then pick up the 'weapon cool' items at appropriate times and you'll rarely have a problem - sort of reminded me of keeping the banish meter in Cyvern well stocked. The beam weapon becomes more useful later on (e.g. against the asteroids).
As for bullet patterns, how many horis are there with intricate bullet patterns? Anyway, bullet patterns are the video game equivalent of the bad guys in the A-team - thousands of bullets fired with no accuracy whatsoever (not meant as a serious point...).

You cannot stop me with Paramecium alone!
That almost sounds like the US audience has more taste than everyone else. Is that what you're implying?lawnspic wrote:Its gonna take alot more polish to grab audiences here in the states IMO. Thats what i was implying.

I was let down by 1942: Joint Strike (Give me a 19XX HD Remix instead of THAT!) but I sort of like Soldner-X.
Beam is weak, but it seems a bit stronger at closer ranges. I don't make it one of my main weapons. Taking out a ton of weaker enemies with it to save some Pulse power is good, OTOH. Once you get several Multi-Shot items, Pulse starts to kick ass. Thank goodness for the Weapon Protection item, because a loaded Pulse is really valuable IMO. Losing it can really turn the tide against you.
It took me a couple games to get the hang of the chain system since it's different. Chaining here is more about weapon management- your weapon power will regenerate slowly if you back off a few moments.
The techno BGM is quite good.
I didn't go in expecting SX to be like one of the Japanese titles. It's different, but still worth a look. Some of the bashable background elements in the 2nd part of stage 2 (the mechanical platform cave) don't stand out well enough from the dark background. However, the bullets are always easy to see.
Seeing the first boss use smartbombs came as a shock.

Shmups don't come along every day, so it's nice to see a solid one make its way to the PSN where it can be enjoyed by PS3 owners. Soldner-X will challenge you with a large number of enemies and onscreen threats, but the significant number of power ups, coupled with deep gameplay thanks to the weapon and chain system will keep you coming back for more, especially when you start unlocking extras. If you're a shooter fan, you should definitely check this one out.
Overall - 8 out of 10

he might.... but I bet he caught it from you!!!!Are you suffering from some kind of personality disorder?
FIGHT!!!!
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
I have to say that I enjoyed this review – not specifically due to the good mark, but much more due to the way in which the reviewer has obviously spent time (read the review to see what I mean) with the chaining, weapon system and the general idea behind the game mechanics. He goes into detail on the way weapon management is important, how the chaining affects gameplay and even aspects of the level design. Even it it had scored 1 out of 10, I'm more happy to see someone understanding the game for what it is: Not Gradius, not Japanese and not Cave. If you like that or not is a different question.MadScientist wrote:IGN review;
