This game is pretty good. I've played a few hours, and got as far as the 4th level. Here are a few of my observations:

The graphics are very good, they don't seem muddled and colorless, as some people have said. Maybe it's the tv, but it looks good to me.

The online runs perfect, with voice chat. Unlike most shooters, 2 player is fun, there's plenty of room for both of you with the widescreen.

The second level boss is a real bitch.

It looks like I'll be playing this for a while, my psn name is IamRipper if anyone is interested in playing sometime.

I went ahead and bought it. Glad I did... I think people are being a bit hard on it. It's well worth $10.

I agree that the ship speed can seem a bit slow with the first two ships, but the Shinden is perfect speed wise. Just a weaker ship obviously. And yeah, Stage 3 is a slow-fest. Shame as I dig all the ships you get to take down for 16x bonus with your charge shot. :D Love the menu designs and the music too–it's all very well done.

At least try the demo out people. I don't think it's boring at all, even on the first stage.

yea i was prob a bit hard on it, i just beat it and watched the credits roll though, for the amount of artists and designers they had on this it should be better.. rubs me the wrong way... that is just my opinion though based on work experience.

I've been playing with an arcade stick and seem to do better than with the analog, the main thing annoying me now is some of the point-blanking that enemies do.

The game is definitely cool. But, there really isnt anything 1942 about it. Considering the opening music is from the 1943 arcade version. I think its a solid game, with a few quirks but can easily be over-looked. The levels are very beautiful but the water looks a little glossy, but still not a issue. I also agree the last 3 levels are fantastic. Level 1 seems a bit unthought out or frenetic in design.

Also the wing king comment - its just as easy as any other version only you get less lives. But all-in-all seasoned players should gobble wing king up.

I haven't noticed the slowdown on stage 3.. Is it on both versions, or just 360? I guess I'll keep an eye out for it on my next play.

Yes, it is. I'd say it drops 5-10 frames. Nothing that really restricts game play. IMHO.

I just played through stage 3 on PS3, and there was no slowdown. I was looking for it, so if there is, it's not noticable on PS3.

I was wondering if anyone knows the following:

Is the hit area for your plane the entire plane? If not, any idea what it is? Seems pretty big. Due to the whole life bar thing, I'm having trouble noticing this.

Does holding the charge shot longer make it stronger? Or, is it the same as when you release it the moment it's charged? I'm having a hard time determining this while playing.

How is the target for the special shot determined? Is it fixed or random? To me, it looks as if it auto targets the strongest enemy on screen. What do you guys think?

How do you trigger the special items? I've gotten them but am not sure how they are triggered.

Has anyone noticed any tricks to medaling (ala Raiden, Stikers, etc)? Seems straightforward to me...just pick them up.

Played this game last week at California Extreme.

It looks like a mix of 19XX and 1944. Damn shame I don't have a 360 or PS3. :(

seiatsu wrote: Again, keep in mind that I only played the first two stages on default so my opinion could change with a little more playtime. My biggest gripe (although minor) is the lifebar and the fact that I can't move my bomb to the O button. So far, I have not found anything that makes the game broken in terms of gameplay (wether it be in the game or the players favor)
Can anything be remapped? I'm considering grabbing this, but I'd definitely want to use my HRAP.

No...but here's the layout (in case it still works for you and assuming you mean ps3 having said HRAP):

X= Normal shot (Hold for charge shot)
[] / O = Special Attack or Joint Strike (Determind by single player or co-op)
/\ = Bomb

Either D-Pad or Analog controls the movement so you should be ok with the stick part (digital part)

No.

I 1CC'd it and placed #33 this morning on my second time to ever play it.

I thought the game was lame as hell personally.

I would like to at least try this game out, but the PSN doesn't have a demo version, unlike Live. That always happens. :x

I think the proximty score is a good thing, but the game is weak. It lacks the garishness of the earlier series and the drab style just looks poor really. If your going to do drab, at least do some lovely explosions (See Under Deefat) or add lots of "nuts n bolts" detail to the AI.
The graphics are dated anyway - this is the kind of art style you were seeing on the PC about 3 years ago.
I personally hate 3D graphics done like this - reminds me of Gigawing generations or Night Raid - very bland.

Regardless of what this place thinks of 360 shmups, Geo Wars 2 is out next week. That has about 6 different modes and looks to be far more fun then this.

Its gutting to see Capcom put their names to his (and Commando 3 if i'm honest).

The more I play this game, the more I like it. I'm also feeling more convinced that the people ruling it out so quickly are those that just pushed their way through it without much regard to scoring...

I am finding little nuances as I play like....

Places to medal harvest..
Places that hold a lot of medals (but can't be harvested)
Hidden items.
Not positive on this but I'm pretty sure I've seen a bit of in game ranking going on...such as more formations depending on how well you're doing, etc.

I still agree that it's not the most challenging their is or anything like that but it does become more difficult when you are trying to maximize score but taking advantage of all the scoring mechanics and opps at once without missing. The most important factor though is it's fun...somehow I feel there is more to this game than what initially meets the eye

I think my concern stems from the attack waves not really being thought about. Unlike say, Rez, Treasure's Ikaruga, or Even Omega V - i'm not sure the game has been playtested thoroughly so a maximum score can be potentially obtained or if they've just thrown together the attack waves and added the scoring system.

Despite my hatred at the term, thats a key difference between a European/US dev and a Japanese dev.

That said, i have to ask does it really matter - you still need to be good to milk the x16 score technique.

Its just frustrating. You would have to use Shinden to milk the 16x to the fullest. For example on the first level, you have 2 plane sets coming from the left and right. Each bends in an opposite direction.

I think the graphics look nice. Some nice detail in the cities and boats, but its like a pastel looking texture, can be weird at times.

I dunno about that...I can practically 16x the entire first stage with the lightning too (didn't really try to do this with mosquito yet). Where I do miss, It's usually me shooting too early (getting 8x instead) or too late. Sometimes you can't go immediately after the formation...let it build first.

Let me show you an AMAZING play of this game right here.

Post by Adigun A. Polack »

Hey guys, I have just discovered a video on YouTube here today on this very game where the player gets a PERFECT “S” ranking on the first five bosses by showing you a better way of how to defeat them a lot quicker... just like a champ!!! :D Here you go:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H40kNrsSVKM&fmt=18

...where this game was actually played on the “Penguin” difficulty level with the ship Mosquito.

I saw this video here just now, and it to me was really so fricking amazing to watch... let that be a lesson to you splendid folks, this kind of tactic can be done on 1942: Joint Strike... especially on a MUCH harder difficulty level, mainly!!! 8)=b !

I'm suprised that nobody mentioned this, but if you outrun the first Level Bonus Boss, on the last level you fight a different boss.. If the Stealth Kills you - you fight it as the last boss..

On level three you can shoot some of the towers before they explode to get bonus medals

i found some hidden medal spots that spew out like 15-20 medals, im guessing their is only one secret medal fountain per stage, i cant find any in stage 1 or 5 though. the ones i found so far are these

stage 2: shoot the rubble from the crumble building on your left hand side midway through

stage 4:their are two in this stage. right before the camera zooms down to fight the bullet hell train, its on the left house on the background u can start shooting at it for a while before the camera zooms in to the train fight

like 30 seconds before the 4th boss fight their are tunnels that lead into caves (train tracks) in the background that u can see, shoot the far left one thats before the cliffs into the boss area

if anyone know where the stage 1,3 and stage 5 medal spewing spots (if they have one) that would be great thanks.

you only need to hold the charge til the circle flashing light is at its peak which is like 2 and a half to 3 seconds, tested it on the pancakes

special shot seems as tho your guess is correct, for me it always goes for the enemies that has the highest health

WTF why did I buy this. Its nothing like the original. Only 5 levels and easy as hell. That review got me so pumped for this game. What a disappointment though.

It isn't worth the 800 microsoft points you are asked to pay. I could buy a fucking plane in AC6 and get more enjoyment out of it for this price. It's just TOO DAMN EASY but the graphics do look bloody awesome. :D

Achievements are easy, too.. personally I don't need to play it again because I 1cc'd it on my first try..
