I also explained "Breaks" in it. 8)
Bout time :D

And so that's what the dang Breaks are....

But what exactly raises the Rate? Not entirely sure about that one, though I seem to do fine with it anyway......

Oh, and the final question:

what's with those counters in the top screen? "Drum" and "Beat" and whatever, there's 4 of them, they tend to be all 7's when in Fever mode.....

Those are the only 2 things left that I dont quite know about this game.

Someone needs to write up a guide for this.....

I could do it, if need be, but Im lazy, lol........

Edit:

Ooooookay, Im not sure what raises the Rate, but whatever it is I just did it really well.... I think I managed 2 Breaks in every level.

I also noticed something else with this.

Getting into Fever Time during a Break seems to be a very good (if very difficult) idea....

Normally the Break bonus doesnt last very long at all, but when I got a Fever Time going during this, the x10 bonus just kept on going until the Fever ended.

Also, a Super Jackpot UFO showed up at this point..... this is only the 2nd time I've seen one. Perhaps the combination of Fever and Break is what makes them appear? They're worth a silly amount of points. They flash gold and black.

It was, though, the last UFO to show up in Fever Time, and I'd shot all the others that appeared first. So that might be a requirement also, dunno.

And AAARRGGGHHH, I *hate* those damn "rush" invaders.... the ones where you shoot them, and they then try to rush to the bottom of the screen real fast.... I woulda 1-lifed this if it wasnt for one of those damn things in stage 4.....

Definitely putting this score on the board.

Well that explains that.

Good grief, they really thought of everything for this game's scoring system, didnt they?

Absolutely love it :)

Say, does each stage have a different music tune?

Seems that way to me.

The basic background music and the added bits from your own shooting and blasting and whatever seem different enough in each stage.

It all sounds really nice, in my opinion.

Probably old news by now, but it looks like this is getting a US release on PSP and DS.

I can't believe that no one has said that it sucks yet.

This might make the next Top 25.

Because it doesn't. Its fucking awesome. :)

Also:
I know I'm not the best source for this, but a friend of mine had the demo for the PSP version and made me play it.

As far as I can tell, the PSP has a bit better graphics, but they detract from the old school feel of the DS version. So I guess that depends on your preference. However, the PSP version DID have slowdown, pretty choppy too. That might just be because its a demo or something or whatever, but hey, just sayin'.

Soo... if you're debating between the two, I'd say go for the DS version, easily. :)

I think that may be the case. I've spent an hour or two with the import version, and don't recall noticing any slowdown.

And it is quite a fun game BTW. I've never been big on Space Invaders, but the scoring system and weapons makes this a fun one!

So the paddle is a good/best way to play it?

I plan on getting a arkanoid and this game. Seems cheaper to buy packaged with arkanoid than just the paddle (plus I'll play arkanoid a bit too).

Wow if it's hitting the DS too, I'd say Nintendo's handheld has made a comeback.

I'd say that the DS has made a comeback several times over, now.

I'd like to pick up the DS version shortly. It reminds me of Lumines, which is still great fun. This is the first time I've heard about it working with the paddle though, why is the paddle getting an European release but not an American release? And by Square-Enix, nonetheless.

the paddle lets you move from anywhere to everywhere in a split-second with pin-point precision. plays totally different without. it's not just a fun gimmick, it's essential.

say, you need to shoot the blinking ufo to get your bonus round. if you play with the d-pad, you're gonna have hunt that thing down the moment it appears (and if it passes you over you're fucked, cause it moves about equally fast as yourself so you cannot ever catch up with it). playing with the paddle, you can pull stunts like avoiding it at first while quickly clearing 2 more screens of enemies to rake up your combo before you zip to the edge of the screen and shoot it right before it flies off.

or this: 2 identical rows of invaders moving in opposite directions. they only align for a short moment, during which you can clear 2 of the same color simultaneously with your laser. using the paddle you can, if you're quick, do so twice during a single alignment (yielding the 4-of-the-same you need for power-ups and bonus rounds). with the d-pad, you're gonna have to wait for the next moment of alignment, fucking up your chain.

etc. etc. etc...

so yeah, the game is a lot faster and more intense and more strategic with the paddle. also, these quasi-syneasthetic games are all about flow, which falls flat when you spend half the time crawling towards your target instead of shooting at it. i played it without paddle once and god was that slow and drab in comparison. i would not recommend getting this at all if you're not getting a paddle along with it.

yeah i'm rambling. take that as a sign of rabid enthusiasm. ^_~

[stupidly, Taito disabled the paddle compatibility for the ranking and versus mode. sensible in that paddle versus d-pad would be grossly unfair, but who'd wanna play this competitively without the paddle anyway? eretsua and i both have a paddle, but when we wanna versus play, we have to revert to d-pad mode anyway. shame.]

now someone just needs to wake up Atari and tell them to do a paddle compatible Tempest 4000X Extreme and Teraped and hey this thing would rock madly for racing games too.

As far as I know, they are on ebay, for 20-30 bucks. I don't know if you can get it anywhere else.

Does anyone know if the US version will allow paddle, since we don't have (and may not get) the paddle yet?

dunno, but when you don't have a paddle plugged in, the game doesn't mention its existence at all (the paddle option in the option menu isn't "off", but simply absent), so there's no need for alterations there. if europe is getting it around the same time but with paddle, then they'll probably just use the exact same code for the US. (then again, it wouldn't be the first time that a localization team goes the extra mile to screw things up...).

According to Siliconera (scroll down to the comments) paddle support has not been removed from the US version. Shouldn't be pulled from the EU version either, since S-E doesn't really...do things like that.

And uh,
Both Arkanoid and Space Invader Extreme are getting a European release this summner with paddle!
Incorrect. The EU release will not come with a paddle, either. The "optional paddle accessory" line was even yanked from S-E's press release.
As someone in the US who's unhappy about this (but saw it coming) I felt the overwhelming need to rain on your parade. :x Sorry, haha.

On a personal note, I didn't actually expect Play-Asia to quit stocking pink paddles! I figured it was just such an unpopular color that I'd have plenty of time to choose which system to buy this game for...

All I can say after buying this game on recommendation (PSP version) is, holy hell this is a modern title I actually can get in to, I love this game already (I also "tried" the DS version, I like it too).

The only Space Invaders game I've really loved is Akkanvader. I'm definitely going to give this a try as soon as I get a chance. I guess I'll go for DS since the paddle option sounds great.

I'll go for DS since I don't have PSP and single cart multi and online both sound great. I don't get why the PSP version doesn't have either.
