I'm pushing 8mil after the stage3 boss, and that's with a chain of between 10,500 - 12,500.
I'm going to make an extremely wild guess that Nemo didn't have a 12,000 chain by the end of stage 3, as I basically wrote above. There are more scoring possibilities than Icarus' way, some of them slightly less bountiful.

It's hard to believe it! :)

Okay, I'm off my Shishin Kick.

Missed the full health bar item on stage 6. Got to the part where you're surrounded by the pots. I literally could not see myself w/ all the flickering. Suck.

I only score a 900-1100 chain after Stage 1 and 8,000-8,500 after Stage 3 to give you an idea of my progression. I know I'm missing points in terms of potential coins and I'm not sure if there are some other scoring aspects I'm neglecting, but I suppose that comes with actually learning the game myself, as opposed to watching superplays for scoring hints, ehh.

No need to explain, was just curious is all. I just find it unusual how you've only got 11mil by the last boss with a chain of 20k, when stage6 is full of scoreboosting oppurtunities. Especially with a big chain in tow.

In any case...

Icarus - namakoteam - 11,442,425 - Stage 6 - Kosame - 11,475 - [WolfMAME]

Really frickin' hard not taking a hit at the stage4 worm, which is what killed a 11k+ chain this time around. Held on with the remaining chain for as long as I could, eventually losing the chain completely at the entrance to the stage5 boss. Played safe for the rest of the run.

Guwangesama kicked my ass. >.<

Still looking for that decent credit...

Replay verified.

EDIT: Relinked screenshots to a more stable server.

So if I clear stage 3 in this chain range and have 4.3 million points, where have I gone wrong? That's a lot of missing points.

Dunno. Starting your chain off with a big count is a good way to pick up missing points. I've always managed between 2,200 and 2,450 ending stage1. If you start slowly, then your scores increases slower as a result.

There's quite a lot of secrets in this game as well.

I've only got 5 mil at the stage 3 boss w/ a chain of roughly 10,000.
One more thing: Why are these 3 people killing everyone?

Note that the "Tales, Characters, etc." links on the front page are broken. You have to use the "next page" button at the bottom.

And for shits & giggles, this isn't a bad read.

sort of understand the chaining now but can only get ~600 in the first stage then tend to die a lot trying to keep it going in stages 2/3 then completely forget about it after that, it seems to be a lot about what you do with the chain when you have it - not really figgured that bit out yet, sounds like your supposed to keep it over 1000 though :?

That's not it. You really don't know what would account for a near halved score? It's a quiz and you're failing. :P

Of course I know.
I just haven't seen your replays for Guwange, so I can't really tell you where you're failing. ^_-

That's a common bug with Guwange - it doesn't always list your highest chain.
What was your chain when it was first broken/halved?
Twiddle wrote:I thought the general rule was to not have ghostman run over people, but it seems I'm able to hold my chain better that way. Huh?
It depends on how you play, really. A lot of players will find it easier to use Shikigami to chain with, but I've always had better success using it only when needed and blitzing around the screen with Shot. My mobility is a lot better that way, and in Guwange, the trick is to quickly move from one place to another to prepare for the next wave. If you use Shot a lot the primary technique is to bullet-stall to hold yor chain.

My chaining is improving a lot more now, since it has been a while since I last played Guwange with any seriousness. Just need to iron out two problem areas in stage4 (that fucking worm, and the end section just before the boss) and I can push a possible 15-17k chain into stage5.

Halved. It was the listed chain. I guess it doesn't record the chain after the first lost life?

Since recording an input file = me screwing up, some more details for this puzzle:
A lot of players will find it easier to use Shikigami to chain with, but I've always had better success using it only when needed and blitzing around the screen with Shot.
This is my approach to the stages. Shoot all of the small guys unless I can use them to sweep away clumps of bullets, try to get the most out of larger targets.

Approximate chain count:
1-2000
2-5000
3-10000

=4.3 million. There can't be too many possibilities here. I destroy most of the enemies as outlined above, do not milk bosses. Are there actual "scoring secrets" (not talking about anything listed in Mode 7's ST, since I've read it) or a basic strategy that I'm missing (like using the piercing cannon instead of the main shot in Mars Matrix)?

I think that's the case, yes. It only seems to record the chain before the first break or half, which is an unusual thing at least. Then again, it sort of makes sense in a "best first-time chain" sort of way.

Chaining records by stage-end:
st1 - 2,400+
st2 - 6,200+ (if no miss)
st3 - between 11,000 and 13,000
st4 - 17,000+ estimated (dependent on passing the worm without break or half)

Scoring records by stage-end:
st1 - 460k+
st2 - 2.2mil+
st3 - between 6.5 and 8mil
st4 - 10mil+ if chain broken/halved at the worm, possibly more if chain held

All my stage5 scores are dependent on whether or not I can hold on to a 10k+ chain by the start of the stage.

All techniques are covered in Mode7's ST. Pretty much all secrets covered in the Strategy forum too.

Unreal timing of spirit use and enemy destruction (eg., let the most bullets appear on screen for coin conversion, good character placement, etc) and boss milking. Both super difficult. If you see SWY's Kosame replay it is clear (being that you have a good grasp already). I'm still a novice Guwange player here.

Also, external auto on A button (don't know the exact rate, but it must be slow..under 10s/s) + normal C, for coin leeching with normal shot in +1000ch flashing skull mode. It seems to be more effective than tapping A with C holding.

p.s. I'm busy with moving house, so probably no play from me this week. :(

It's a fine beginner-intermediate guide, but I think it's lacking some basic and not so basic scoring info. It may seem obvious, but what values get multiplied and vice versa would be good to cover (bosses - no?). A little more detail to how milking the level 3 boss can amount to 20 million points, for clarity's sake.

Well, for starters, the coins you leech off of enemies with your shot (the small coins) are barely worth any points at all, probably like 0.01 or 0.001 points per coin times your multiplier. Normal coins seem to be worth around 1 point each. I don't think they're worth quite as much outside of the bosses, but I haven't really looked in to it.

On the third boss you're destroying those orbs which rain large coins down on you which are each worth whatever your chain is. So, with a 15,000 chain and grabbing just ten coins you've got yourself 150,000 points. Do this for a couple minutes and you'll net yourself a lot of points. But can you survive the attack long enough?

Anyway, I'm not 100% sure on any of this, but that's what it looks like to me.

Sorry bro, I've been really busy this week with work and other activities. I really am not good at cave games scoring wise. I can usually pass the first loop, but my score is usually utter crap. Guwange is the worst for me, and EspRaDe a close second. Not being able to read my score sorta pisses me off to and makes me not want to play at all (though the art in this game is great).

But the biggest problem is just time (and I *hate* *hate* *hate* chaining).

That is correct. Anything vacuumed to your character is worth shit and is only good for pumping the chain up. Falling air coins, and ground coins are worth your chain multiplied by a factor I haven't figured out yet, but coin size does play into it (small coins are worth a fraction, while the largest coins/coin stacks are worth a multiplied amount).

Stage 3 boss is exceptionally difficult, a throwback to Cave knowing that boss milking in Esprade was pretty simple, therefore they pumped up the difficulty of the bosses by making them get angrier as they cycled through their patterns. As a Kosame player I can really feel the difficulty that prolonged boss milking results in, as Kosame's attack strength is very low. Strange thing is, I chain the best with Kosame, and do worse with Shishin and Gensuke.

In any rate...

Icarus - namakoteam - 14,223,090 - Stage 6 - Kosame - 13,150 - [WolfMAME]

Chain halved due to stupidity in the section before the worm in stage4. Carried the leftovers of the chain up to the fifth boss before losing it completely. Got lucky with the Full Banquet item giving me a boost all the way to Guwangesama...

... before getting owned by the last pattern. >.<

Never start the final form with only one hit left on your last life bar.

Replay verified. I'lll break 20mil on this game yet.

Fuck. Forgot to save a state upon exiting MAME, and lost my 14mil score from the highscore data file. ;_;
Good thing I recorded the replay.
Does WolfMAME not save nvram files now? Having to save states to keep the score table and the C AUTO ON in the configuration is a pain in the ass.

I've noticed MAME doesn't seem to save high scores anymore. For this entire competition, every time I close MAME and come back, the scores are reset. It sucks quite a bit, as I seem to recall older versions of MAME saving your scores when you left the program.

Anyway, a little better...

WolfMAME does save your score (I'm using v0.106) with the latest unofficial hsdat file, but it doesn't save the in-game configuration. As a result, loading the game again keeps the scores, but loses C AUTO ON. I have to keep saving a state before exiting to retain all recent scores (as it occasionally forgets to write the new scores to the hs file) and the C AUTO ON.

And I've lost my new record. ;_;
Damn you, emulation!
For being more convenient to capture from, and more fiddly than using the PCB!
