Analogue shumping is like spelling out romantic sonnets to a lover by stirring one's erect shaft in a steaming bowl of alphabet soup. Or maybe it's because I have big hands. 3:

I hate the analog stick, although I think the 360 D-Pad is decent enough. That said I can understand why someone wouldn't like it.

Also fuck you zone g, eat a giant bag of mechanized dicks.

This is gold.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

I know that all too well. At least it's not as bad as it is with shoes (US size 17/UK size 16 here ).

I'm currently trying to get back into the swing of things with good ol' arcade Gradius, would like to get a 3-ALL, practiced a bit today. While it is immediately apparent that the second loop is considerably harder than the first I find that the third loop is almost as big of a leap when compared to the second - slightly faster enemies and additional suicide bullets can make all the difference in the world, I still need to figure out a good way to reliably get past 3-1 without dying, and let's not even talk about 3-2 and 3-7. A couple years ago I might've been "ah it's not that bad", but now I'm a bit more inclined to agree...

I think it depends on what model you're working with. The one I have is a bit old (I actually bought it before I even owned a 360, just for PC games), and the D-Pad is extremely unresponsive. Like, maybe only 1 in 3 times I tap a direction will I actually move. I have to press it so hard to get a response that it ends up not being any better for tap-dodging than the analogue stick.
Also fuck you zone g, eat a giant bag of mechanized dicks.
I'm assuming this is for DBCS? The only advice I can give is that if you hang at the left edge of the screen, the meteors will provide a gap for you. As for the clusterfuck at the end, or any of those floating turrets that have 3 times more health than they should, I've got nothin. Except maybe "embrace the Assault master race". :P

Went back to Under Defeat after not playing it for too long. I was doing really poorly at first and got kind of angry, but luckily that lead to me being more aggressive and doing better :P
I did manage to improve my score a bit, but I really need to start working on stage 4 again.

I would totally sig this if I hadn't really recently changed my sig quote.

Zone G from Darius Gaiden huh..?

That zone is shit, I'd recommend play it with ABDHLQV or ABEINSY route, much manageable.

Me too, but GV actually has analogue response. That's more like penning a romantic sonnet to a lover with one's erect shaft and the services of HP sauce and an extra-large baguette! Image

Nice. It has been so long for me I think I'm about to pick it up on the 360.

Edit - Have made it to zone v twice now and risk storage once. No missed to stage 6, shot the extra ship free, died, and then picked it up. Died twice on the boss and once on stage 7. Was able to turn RS a few shades redder before I lost my last ship. Clear coming soon.

Decided to give some Cave games a go in MAME - mainly DonPachi, DOJ and Espgaluda.

My focus out of these three will be Espgaluda, which was the one I got the farthest into (up until stage 4).

I also gave DDP, Ketsui, Ibara and ESP Ra. De. a shot, but I'll try going for these later.

Espgaluda was one of easiest Cave games, keep trying!

Also beware the final boss's last pattern.

Just started Fantasy Zone II. I wasn't a huge fan of the first game, but the second boss here really impressed me.

I've kinda been swapping between Progear and Daioujou BL. After playing easier shmups for a bit (specifically Darius and RefleX) to relax from my Guwange 1cc, I think I'm ready to get back into CAVE games. From what I hear, those two should be more of a challenge compared to Guwange and Dodonpachi's first loop.

Currently playing Dragon Blaze. What an awesome game!

And the occasional Ketsui credit inbetween.

First time managed to no-miss the double mirror bosses in Judgement Silversword, my favorite fight in the game so far. Also managed to reach stage 30 in one credit but I have no idea how to manage some of the patterns. I'm refraining from watching replays and trying to figure out things on my own.

JSS is becoming one of my top purchases on the Steam store. I really wasn't expecting to like it so much.

Batsugun and Batsugun Special right now. Managed to almost clear the 3rd loop in Special (died on the last boss), but have yet to get any further than stage 4 in the normal version. I thought even the normal version wasn't regarded as particularly difficult? Maybe I'm just spoiled by the smaller hitbox, shield system, more powerful bomb, and slower bullets in the first loop of Batsugun Special...

I consider Normal to be much more difficult than Special, if only by virtue of the larger hitbox.

Stage 4 is usually my limit in normal, where I end up bomb-spamming myself to death against Jupiter.

I've actually taken a liking to Skull Fang* - I would have never seen that coming. Ugly graphics, sloppy design, and nonsensical "boss chasing" mechanic. But I still enjoy it! It's much easier to play on the Saturn with configurable controls (speed control on the shoulder buttons), though I don't know what the "thruster" control options mean. I wish I knew how to do the stupid street-fighter command special moves, as it seems some bosses require them to be more effectively fought.

The Little Things: the rival mech/plane boss shouts I WILL CRUSH YOU, an audio sample lifted directly from Wolf Fang. 8)

*stealth edit 1 year later. My thoughts have changed: see my true reckoning in the high score thread ;)

While my "baby" is still in the shop (JP DC I bought in July'99), I picked up an NTSC DC for $40 at my LGS.

Guess what I'm playing tonight?

Stellavanity. Now that I have a PC that can run it with a delay % of about 1.50% tops I can fully enjoy it.

...on C-type, S-type is still largely a black box to me.

Also, playing it in tate is ass.

Haha. Good guess:D

Playing Under Defeat for the first time in three months was like a hit off of a crack pipe.

Ya know, if I was a recovering crack head.

Played a credit of Mars Matrix too, made it to the train before I moved on to Last Blade 2. A fighting game which I think is remarkable, but I know little about it at this point.

I spent most of the day playing Mars Matrix and Under Defeat.

Missed 5 million by 64,000. I missed the boss bonus on 2-2 and I'm kind of happy I did this time. I would have missed 5 million by 4,000 points if I had gotten it. That would have sucked .

Hello~

I'm still trying to get a good Donpachi score. Just a couple days ago I made a theoretical Type B score that's about ~6 mil above the world record:

Image

Note: this is a cheated score and took about 3 hours of playing using save states to achieve.

I've been attempting some NMNB runs and my highest score with type A died at the stage 4 boss with about 11 mil points. My highest scoring type B NMNB run died halfway through stage 4 and had a score of 8.5 mil.

My goals with this are to at least get within the top 5 on our leaderboard and if I'm feeling up to it I'll go for the western record. I'm also going to try to get the western record for type B. Progress on this game has been very slow and it's going to stay that way for about another a week. Hopefully I'll be a to pull of a loop 2 only clear in about 2 weeks.

Last week I didn't get too much time for shmups, unfortunately, and also made the probably unwise decision of binge playing Zero Gunner 2 on the day where I had the most time, instead of working on learning Under Defeat. I didn't even get to stage 1-5 (my furthest) after many hours :( Very frustrating, though I still think that ZG2 is an amazing game. I just wish it had a practice mode or Gunbird 2 style debug menu.

Today I played some UD though. I feel like for a game that is basically a memorizer, the enemies can be pretty damn unpredictable (especially the blue fucks and the EMP cannons in 1-4  ) That being said, I did make a little progress, but I do think I need to start watching some stage videos again to see if I can get some ideas for strategies from them.
