Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
When pictures of an item posted online doesn't match with the actual physical condition of it. I went and looked at a used guitar this weekend (a $3500 gibson les paul), and they must have taken pictures from very specific angles and distances to hide the issues with it LOL.
Reminds me of a few times I've been tricked by ebay sellers who take pictures that draw attention away from imperfections in their items.

Watching footage of Shadow Warrior 2, I notice something that I hate in all Flying Wild Hog FPS games.
The instant the crosshairs touch the hitbox for "nimble" type enemies they automatically do a sidestep/flip. In a way that makes it obvious your crosshairs are the trigger for this behavior.
I can't put into words how much this breaks my suspension of disbelief.

It's a form of input reading which is generally a shitty way to do enemy patterns or ai, IMO. I try to avoid it myself when working on such things.
It would probably be better if they responded based on proximity or something. Or at the very least the way your character is physically moving and behaving.

A delay of half a second would probably do the trick. Just enough to give the illusion that the monster is realizing you're aiming right at him. But instantaneous response is bullshit aimbotty behavior.Squire Grooktook wrote:It's a form of input reading which is generally a shitty way to do enemy patterns or ai, IMO. Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Honestly, striving for realism in video game AI is something that I very rarely feel adds anything to the game. Conversely I love having transparent gameplay mechanics that you can react to immediately rather than trying to imagine that your opponent is a human being when it isn't, ultimately resulting in the requirement of a much less intuitive method of understanding the game and how to play it.
The obvious example would be stealth games where you can walk right behind enemies without them noticing you, and have them completely forget about you the moment you find a good hiding place. Sure, it's not very realistic, but at least it's a lot more fun to play than having to hide somewhere for 30 minutes waiting for the alarm to cool down across three levels.
This would have been very much at home in the mechanics you love/hate thread.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
I asked about an issue with saving on the Krikzz forums for Megaman Wily Wars and the only reply I get links me to the patch I used and asked me if I'm sure I used the EU ROM, despite me mentioning that I used MULTIPLE ROMS. Not to mention that the game probably wouldn't work at all if I used the wrong ROM for the patch. I made another topic, mentioning that both the EEPROM and SRAM ROMs didn't save and someone still has to tell me that Wily Wars uses both EEPROM and SRAM saves.

IMO the issue with input reading isn't realism or a lack thereof. It's more that it's a dumb way of coding enemies that results in behavior thats both un-intuitive and way too predictable once you understand it.Sumez wrote:Honestly, striving for realism in video game AI is something that I very rarely feel adds anything to the game. It can work in a pinch but there are better ways of designing enemies imo

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
I'm taking the PSAT on Saturday, and yesterday I was practicing with last year's practice booklet because I forgot to get this year's at school, and I was amazed at how fucking easy it was compared to normal school work (fucking no specific details and only big-picture stuff/analogies; easy as fuck). I remembered to pick up this year's at school today, and when I got home and opened it I was horrified: it's now just like normal work. Looking it up, I found that yeah, they changed it to be like normal schoolwork starting this year. I'm going to get a much lower score, thanks to this.
And I thought it was bad when being born in 1999 meant high retro game prices...

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Never mind my previous post; I looked in last year's practice booklet and it turns out it's also the redesign, so I guess I'm not gonna get a bad score. I actually googled "SATs" out of curiosity and found that they changed it, so then I looked at the questions in this year's practice booklet for a couple of seconds and virtually had a panic attack.

Most of the featured/top-selling games on Steam are early-access. Whenever I'm looking through the store to find good games, ~80% of the games I find are early-access. There's no way to filter these out. Like holy fucking shit, I must be Hitler reincarnated if I want to play a fucking finished, polished game!!!
Also, there are games that are barely above smartphone games, "gag games" (term I made up), and games "ported" from Kongregate flooding the store, making it hard to find any games that aren't like fucking "Shower With Your Dad Simulator" or "Goat Simulator" or "I Am Bread".

Game reviews (several) that praise Shadow Warrior 2's horrifically detailed dismemberment system but at the same time whinging about the dick jokes.

1180 - and it didn't make a bit of fucking difference either way. I told my university that I wouldn't be needing loans, and would be paying with cash - and they shook my hand, and welcomed me to Wesleyan University.

I'm not sure if you can filter Early Access out of the lists at the bottom of the front page (the "Popular New Releases"/"Top Sellers"/"Upcoming"/"Specials" tabs) but you can definitely filter them out of the "New Releases" and "Recently Updated" sections, as well as the Discovery queue.atheistgod1999 wrote:Most of the featured/top-selling games on Steam are early-access. In case you didn't know, between 2005 and 2016 the SAT had three sections for a total score of between 600 and 2400; before 2005 scores ranged from 400 to 1600, and from March 2016 onwards scores also fall in this range (though the structure of the test itself is different from before). I'm not sure if the score distribution with the new test is supposed to remain the same as it was before, though I'm sure you can find plenty of info on that with a quick Google.atheistgod1999 wrote:Having to wait at least two months to get my PSAT results.

The fuck is "thin privilege", as well as the 60+ new genders?
"Fat acceptance" just sounds like people who don't want to stop eating Big Macs every meal of the day, and therefore make excuses to not lose weight. What the fuck? And the thing is that it's sorta offensive to the other ones; like, people don't choose to be born a woman, gay, black, etc. But fat people can stop being fat, and therefore stop being oppressed. They can easily become thin with a fucking diet and/or exercise.
And 100, hell, even 10 years ago, did anyone think "I'm being prosecuted for being demi-sexual!
"!?!? These fucking genders seem like they were invented soley so they can feel more oppressed, because it honestly seems to me that they like being oppressed, and don't actually want things to be better. Why do you have to have a specific gender for some person's own specific sexual arousal? Of course it's gonna vary slightly depending on the person, but that doesn't mean they're a different fucking gender! And why are they considered genders and not sexual orientations?

Gender stuff aside, you aren't correct on the obese comment. There are people for whom obesity is a mental issue, not so easily fixed with diet and exercise. Then there are, as you say, people who don't give a fuck about their health.atheistgod1999 wrote:The fuck is "thin privilege", as well as the 60+ new genders?

Petrol stations without HOT FOODZ CAPABILITIES. I don't even drive, muhfucka, what else am I gonna do in a shitty minimart?

Yeah, FUCK these two tossers. Probably got hot petrol station weenies coming out their ears when they're not skullfucking pigs. That's not a euphemism, for our friends across the pond/s.
Got a hot petrol station hotdog today though, with a heaping ton of relish (which was cold for contrast, obviously). God damn that was a good dawg. Hot food helps morale a lot in colder months I've found. Certain cold sandwiches can taste like despair, it ain't worth it unless you are literally dying. Don't be a dumbass like I was and settle for cold stuff to save money/time - nobody is impressed! 3; (I was born and raised in a broiling hot tropical shithole where an excess of heat was the morale-sapper, so I'm learning this stuff as I go! you cold fucks

Man, I don't miss that shit after having moved down here to Florida 6 years ago. The only remotely cold month here is January, where it may or may not dip to 40F for like a few occasional days, and it'll probably be like 80F still.BIL wrote:Hot food helps morale a lot in colder months I've found. What kind of hell do you live in where you can't get a good 'ole warm cup of [your preferred steaming hot beverage] at a gas station, even if they don't have nice hot sandwiches? Seriously, it's kind of unreasonable to operate in a cold place and not offer something warm when it's cold out.
Or hell, what about gas station frozen burritos?
well, that's probably a really USA thing, but I really can't think of a gas station I've seen that didn't have a microwave in the shop if they sold food more substantial than candy and Cheetos at all, and most of them that I can think of have had proper warm food on offer anyway
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Visiting non-summer England a few times I've learned to survive by drinking buckets of tea. Solid warm food sure helps a lot but you can't eat that all day, can you ?

Another annoyance in SW2 I noticed is that nearly every enemy will dash away the very moment when you press the fire button for your rocket launcher. The very moment when you press the fire button. Large enemies rarely ever dodge normally, but reading the input of firing rockets is no problem for them. How am I supposed to predict their movements? I can only land a solid hit with a rocket if they are attacking, although usually when they do that they are in splash damage range (apparently killing enemies by shooting a rocket at your feet when in Second Wind still somehow kills you too).Mischief Maker wrote:Watching footage of Shadow Warrior 2, I notice something that I hate in all Flying Wild Hog FPS games.
