Congrats! It's a relatively easy game to beat the first loop on, but much tougher to beat the entire game (similar to Donpachi in a way). The original Batsugun isn't too bad either, but the larger hitbox, weaker bomb, and lack of a shield is going to make it require a fair bit more effort at times compared to the Special version, which is a much more friendly entry point for beginners.
Faith wrote:But my favorite is playing both Iceman and Olisis (even if Type-C is a crap ship)...
Wait, what? Type C isn't crap. Is it possible you've been used to playing as Type B using Batsugun Special's rapidfire button it includes on button 3 and haven't tried holding Button 1? Type C is weird and actually has two shots depending on if you tap or hold. It has a really strong focused shot if you hold Button 1 as opposed to tapping rapidly or using the rapidfire button. The lasers you get at max level also deal quite respectable damage, and you can use the rapidfire button for spread against popcorn as needed. It's weaker than Type B's lightning beam, but it's still pretty respectable.

Type A however, despite looking really cool and flooding the screen with shots and missiles, deals such poor damage to enemies that it's generally considered the hardest shot to clear or score with. The damage is really unfocused at a distance and I don't think it gets high enough at close range to be worth it.

I actually ran into the same issue with Air Gallet where I thought the green weapon sucked until it was pointed out to me that it has rapidfire built-in, so you have to hold Button 1 instead of tapping it to deal full damage.

For survival-only play, no-autofire power levels are C >>> A > B I think, gradually inverting as you increase the auto rate.

You don't have to get super close for Type A to start being effective - just don't hug the very bottom. Everything that flies into your shot dies, so be confident with it. The problem I have with Type C is the focus shot and lasers have a bad matchup versus the 4 and 5 bosses due to all the small parts (the focus shot has Ripple syndrome and will only hit one enemy at a time), which ironically makes you more dependent on auto pointblank than Type A is.

1cc'd GG Aleste.

Image

At first I thought this was a bit harder than GG Aleste II, but you get a ton of extends, so once you get past the first couple stages it's pretty easy to brute force it to the end. I think the level/boss design is also maybe a bit more interesting over all than GG Aleste II, though it's music is not quite on the same level (still good though). I think power-downs are also a bit more brutal in GG Aleste. One thing I did appreciate is that the bonus stages let you power back up a few stages relatively easily.

EDIT: one more thing I wanted to add. Napalm doesn't seem as OP in this as it is in GG Aleste II. I found Homing was really the most consistent, even if the power is lower than other shot types. There's a lot of enemies that come from the back and sides of the screen, and while D (Defense?) is maybe a bit technically better at dealing with that, it seemed to kind of suck, on balance, especially at low power.

Hehe, yes, I know about the focus for Type-C... but, no matter what I do, different rapid fire setting, so on... Type-C I find is super handicapped with bosses.

When I play Type-C, many times: "wow, I never knew this boss phase existed!"

Wide shot, focus shot... tried everything... boss just die so so much slower compared to both Type-A and Type-B.

Type-A pointblank is actually very good.

I tried many times, all three types, and with Type-C last boss is torture and very slow to kill even with maximum bomba stock going in.

Got a 1-ALL in Progear! That took more days than I was anticipating, I really struggle with horis... In the end I had to play incredibly safe and bomb in pretty much every situation where I had doubts, just to at least get it done. But it's a 1-ALL none the less! :)

Congrats! I knew you could do it, it's really not that much worse than Mushi I think. Some of the patterns are tougher and longer but it's balanced by the ability to bullet cancel a lot of attacks in stages.

Thank you! Yeah, the bullet cancelling thingy was incredibly useful. I ended up letting most diamonds just fall from the screen to stay on diamond and get more easy (well... easy is a strong word :D) screen clears. Paired with using bombs more frequently it turned out to be pretty manageable! I think I got the world's lowest score for a 1-ALL though, didn't even reach the third extend. 8)

This is a legit useful tactic, particularly at some sections in loop 2. It works even better in loop 2 since gems fall offscreen faster, reducing the risk of losing cancels because you have the max amount of onscreen gems (bullets won't cancel unless they can actually transform, and there's a limit to how many rings/gems can be onscreen at once).

I 1cc'd Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius! This one took a while, over 10 hours! You'd think it'd be easier than Batsugun given that it has unlimited score extends, but no, it's way harder. And waaaaay longer too, it's like an endurance gauntlet. I really enjoyed it though. Might be my favorite shmup so far.

I'm glad you had fun with it! ^^ It's my pick for the best of the Parodius games I think. Sexy Parodius is cool too but it's a bit complicated in ways that feel overdesigned at times. Gokujou and the original Parodius are fun too.

Congrats Ipslucasps,

Was this achieved on a real Atlus/Cave Donpachi jamma pcb with a candy cab/supergun or through Mame/Final Burn Neo emulation instead?

My local arcade hangout, The Electric Underground, had gotten in Donpachi running on an Dynamo upright cab back in 1995 and it was priced at four nickels per credit. I'd credit-feed it to the very end just to see what happened next. Barebones JPN & USA region Donpachi pcbs were selling on eBay in the $220.00-$230.00 range back in 2002-2003 which was the normal going rate for one -- of course, those days of buying/scoring a DP pcb "on the cheap" are, indeed, long gone.

----------
Still can't believe that the American based "Atlus USA" arcade subsidiary didn't sell/distribute the International Version of Dodonpachi jamma pcb conversion kits in the USA back in 1997-1998 timeline (as they did sell/distribute the USA region Donpachi jamma conversion kits stateside back in 1995). So yes, American arcade gamers were quite familiar with Donpachi in the arcades back in 1995, a mere thirty years ago this year. Oh my, how time flies by these days especially with classic arcade game stg titles nowadays.

I played it through FBNeo. There really aren't any arcade hangouts near me, sadly. (If someone's reading this and knows about any arcade hangout in Belo Horizonte, Brasil, send me a message!)

I just got the Guwange 1CC with Gensuke today. I hadn't played this for a long time, but it's a special game to me as it was the first game I ever played on a candy cab at @jonny5 's arcade meets. Being able to finally clear it (thanks to some motivation from a friend who recently got the clear) was really incredible. Turns out resource management and deliberately letting life up items sit so you can take a few hits and grab them later is really, really helpful.

Hopefully the replay didn't desync, but finding that out will have to wait.

EDIT: Fuck, I must have jinxed myself. I guess I need to 1cc again. I think I do have an idea of what might have gone wrong at least.

Thanks! I actually had to 1cc it again, hahaha. I did improve my score slightly though, so that counts for something. Also managing to no miss the TFB was really surprising, as I hadn't practiced it with so few resources, so that was an additional accomplishment.

I've since my first posts to Ghost Blade HD put many more hours into it (my Switch now says 50-54 hours), and after beating it on normal difficulty with the weak Rekka ship (purple), I even managed my 1CCs on hard difficulty with Ghost (blue) and Milan (green).

However, I sort of cheated on the final boss and let him self-destruct after 99 seconds. Dodging the shots until then is significantly easier than the actual fight.

Back then, I thought, "I'll probably spare myself the trouble of trying to beat him properly." But then, I couldn't leave it at that and felt I was skilled enough to take on the final boss properly, which I thankfully did ^^

https://youtu.be/YLUqtoMpvi4

Another thing I wanted to leave as is was a run on hard difficulty with the much more weak purple ship Rekka. But... since I was already so invested in the game, I had to somehow manage the last remaining run with Rekka. I had to... While practicing, I also learned to collect the point bonus more often, which you get for defeating the larger enemies in close combat, which makes it even more "satisfying" to watch ;)

Levels 1 and 2 also went particularly well (without losing any lives and only using a few bombs, which I usually don't manage). I wasted some resources in Level 3, but in the end, it was still enough. But I'm definitely not going to attempt a run with a "proper" Level 5 boss kill with Rekka :D

(The score was ok too ^^)

Finally managed to get the 1-ALL in Daioujou! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqQ4IvHlJYY

I was initially playing White Label on a physical PS2, but I ended up getting frustrated and switching to Black Label on an emulator. BL's tiny hitboxes make it way more forgiving, even if the bullet patterns aren't noticeably different most of the time.

Great experience, all things considered. I see why it's an all-time favorite for so many people. Gonna move on to DFK and SDOJ within the next few months.

You will be very much at home in SDOJ, many familiar patterns and rhythms!

If you want to play SDOJ in Xenia... I very recently posted a guide with current information on how to configure and run it properly!~

Thanks for posting that overview! I actually have a physical copy of SDOJ on the X360, so I'll most likely play that unless there's some other benefit to Xenia.

Definitely looking forward to it though. I'm from the Touhou generation, so I actually like the idea of anime girls yapping in your ear while you dodge bullets (probably not a common opinion amongst core DDP fans lol). And I've heard that the difficulty of the 1cc makes it a worthy finale to the series for "intermediate" players like myself (e.g. DOJ 2-ALL might be harder, but if we're not counting TLBs and all that, I think SDOJ is supposed to be one of the harder Cave clears).

Vimana with autofire 4th loop clear (cleared 5-3).

https://youtu.be/qTgR2HE-GxQ

Of course, its a game that was meant to get played without autofire but even if there are many simple moments with autofire, there are some difficulty spikes as well and a death at the wrong moment can cause some chain deaths. Every loop gets a bit harder without big steps. Thats why many loops are possible without too much training. Stage 5 gets very messy in more or less every loop even with autofire, so it can consume many ressources. The run was long enough fo me, so I doubt that I will try a 5th loop clear.

But I definitely try a semi-no autofire run the next days (but this will be only a 1st loop clear, I guess ^^)

Finally got the clear of Ghost Blade HD. This was kind of a "hate clear." I find it to be pretty tedious, but it was one of the first shmups I've bought and it was supposed to be baby's first bullet hell. Up until this week I never put a ton of time into it. A few credits here and there over the years. But I had some time off and figured I would just grind it out. Overall not exceptionally difficult, but deaths tend to be rather cheap and this made it frustrating. I'd say the thing that kept me coming back besides nostalgia is the pretty good arranged soundtrack. I just don't want to hear it for a while now haha.

No problem!~ I think I remember reading that for 360, it is better to play SDOJ on super-potato resolution to reduce input lag.

You definitely want to watch this... if you want to play on 360:

Or search "electric underground saidaioujou 360" on YouTube)!

So... even though I own this game... I do not have a 360 to play it haha... so I cannot compare it myself, but... I would think that maybe on Xenia you don't have those added 360 problems!

Yeah the hitboxes are killer. Makes micro-dodging nearly impossible. Sucks because most of the patterns are massive RNG clouds of bullet vomit. At first I tried routing the game like I would usually do. I gave up on that nearly immediately and just did runs until I got favorable RNG.

Another quirk I noticed about the game is the "slowdown." Usually for slowdown the frame rate drops, but in this game the shot per frames decreases. For the spreadshot ship it can make rapid shot nearly useless.

Yes >_<!~ All these issues... and it made for a very frustrating STG experience.

Some of the music was good, but, problem is... you mix all the problems of the game with it... and now if I hear it anymore I just want to smack myself lol...

Anyway, like I said with one of my posts in that thread... the stupid leaderboards counts using Continue as "ALL" clear still with no score penalty it seems. I found that out when playing Hard and I used one Continue at the end of the last stage I think to avoid disrupting the flow to better practice... so it really made everything seem so wasted and pointless since it doesn't matter if you 1CC or 5CC... the leaderboard treats it all the same and it does not show how many Continue anyone had used -_-"... who even thought to do this????? So stupid.

Strange. I think it never feels tedious to play and that that the bullet patterns work quite well. You don't need to memorize most parts of the game but if its too vomitty at times, you surely can reduce it with routing.
