Your signature is great and I always thought it was great: WHEEEEEEEE!

Well, anyway, it's official, Nintendo is full of dorks.
I'm going to butcher my nintendo loving buddy. Just gonna call him up and say:WHEEEEEEEE!
He's gonna laugh painfully and probably find some nintendo fanboyish way of making excuses: Well, it's .................

Exactly - and since noone keeps their promises as far as hardware goes (because even if you do a fine job, hype expectations cannot be met), it would have been as terrible boomerang for Nintendo. The net would have been crowded by people claiming that revolution failed, never occurred, turned into dictatorship or else.

This way instead, internet is crowded with people that just dislike how "Wii" sounds.

I was thinking in terms of games. Maybe I'm being slightly naive, but having a name like Revolution would have meant that they'd have had to pull their fingers out and come up with some refreshing stuff...

Not that a simple name change means they won't, mind you.

The underground 5EX-games developers get a new system to make bad games for.
Who can guestimate the names of new games to be made by these guys?

Incredibly candy commercials with hyper ultracute teenage girls singing terribly happy sounding songs with a "NINTENDO! WHEEEE!" or two somewhere in there, proudly revelling with the goofy sounding name.

Somber looking businessman explains the capabilities of the machine, supported by shots of the thing in action, ending with the catchphrase "Wii: Silly name. Serious business."

Some aggressively surreal French type art film only tangentially related to the product, and taking advantage of the oui = wii thing. Perhaps, the device will happen to be in the shot every time a character says "oui".

I dunno. Maybe it could work.

Personally, I'm still thinking of buying the console, but I'll probably order it online now, heh.

I know Nintendo's trying to appeal to a different audience with this console, but the problem with it is that it's going to alienate the kids even more. When I was a kid, I was a big Sega fanboy, and I remember thinking about how stupid it was that some kids just automatically dissed the Genesis because it was Sega. It's the same thing today, only Nintendo is the one who gets lambasted. This name certainly won't help build their rep in playgrounds around the world.

Now everyone hates it. There's some people who think they're like, cool, cos they like, don't hate it.

Cos like they knew that like if it's like called, wii which of course is pronounced we, people are gonna say that's a bit like wee. Cos you know people are so like, predictable.

keeping the name "Revolution" is not an option for nintendo in Japan. It never was. "Revolution" would be impossible for the Japanese to pronounce even in Engrish.

Well, well... on the cover of my copy of Ridge Racer Revolution, it's spelled

RE-BO(vo)-RYU-SJyoN. Not bad, if you think of it.

EDIT: jpg to clarify :D

"Wii" is just a big PR prank/joke. Nintendo will most likely confirm they're sticking to the Revolution name at E3.

I wish.

Regarding the katakana for "Revolution", why does this even matter? Isn't there an actual Japanese word that expresses the concept of "revolution"? Kanji, hiragana (don't know that much about Japanese, sorry)? It's the concept behind the name that matters, not the actual English word.

Ugh, why do companies do stupid shit like this?

One of the best thing about strokes of genius is that everyone thinks that the idea was ridiculous at the time. Besides, the console war has been too serious in recent years, and it's time someone with recognition in the industry did something silly for a change.

revolution = 革命 (kakumei)

But using Kanji words for a product is a big marketing no-no in Japan, since it will be considered totally old-fashioned and stuffy. Only something you'd want to use when selling tea or tatami mats. ;)

I can see the first commercials for the Wii now. A Scottish guy, kilt and all, saying...

"Aye laddys. Wii is tha way ta goh. Yew and all ya wee friends can play wih' ya Wiis inta tha night, an wih' tha new multiplayah tap, tha whole lottaya can ohl play wih jus one'a ya Wiis ah' tha same time! An since tha contrallahs ah' wiyaless, yew can play wih' ya Wiis all ovah tha hews!

Soh geh' ya bottoms ovah tew tha nearest store, and buy woon fa yaselves. Yew an ohl ya friends, wihluv playin' wih' ya Wiis. I prohmise ya tha'."

Anyway, with the whole "Wii" thing out of my system, I can't help but think that this name will change at least a little bit before the system launches. And even if it doesn't, well... who really cares? It's a name. Most called the NES simply "Nintendo", and the Genesis was usually referred to as "Sega". The name will be replaced by whatever nickname players give it, or they'll simply get over it. Sure, Katana sounded cooler than Dreamcast, but hey... we all moved on and played the living hell out if it anyway, right?

Wait... Katana was the codename for the Saturn.

Tally Wacker was the code name for the Dreamcast.

I don't think there's any indication that Nintendo will change the name of this system. They wouldn't have announced it this close to E3, only to change it again.

Oh well, now WE can tell Nintendo that WE need more decent first and third party titles.

The old school dowloads sound mighty tempting, but I'm not buying unless Nintendo get's of their arses and WE also get more then one fuggin' Mario platformer, and one original Zelda game for Wii.

Now that you mention the Revolution's (It's still the revolution to me) emulation, Dave, it makes me think of how wrong it will be to say "I'll go play some Bonk on my Wii" :x
