Alright, after looking at the screenshots and new gameplay videos, it definitely looks like DUO. Not a fan of the new interface and artwork though, and it sounds like the VAs are completely different. Now I'm really curious as to why they didn't just do a straight port of DUO instead. I'm going to pick it up no matter what of course, though I do hope they add some meaningful content not found in DUO. Something like all-new characters, new music tracks/arrangements, new stages, new paths in story mode, new game modes, etc. I also hope they'll take this opportunity to address some lingering character balance issues, Sakurako being the character who is most in dire need of some changes. It would also be nice if they changed the assists a bit so that there's actually a good reason to pick something other than the "four corners". Not a gameplay issue, but the main menus could use a redesign, the ones in DUO were rather ugly compared to the ones in Rev.X imho.

While typing this up, I just came to the realization that the illustrated scenes in story mode might also be redrawn in this new style.

Cuilan's new design is ok I guess. Not as good as his previous ones.
Zaarock wrote:Some gameplay changes looking at the livestream. Upon damaging your opponent they spray out charge-items which are a major source of recovering your gauge. I guess this is to encourage moving around and getting up close but don't see how that would work with a couple characters unless they get changed a lot (Sakurako?). Also looked like there are alternate versions of assists? There was a frontal version of the circular barrier assist, might be shield + assist.

Not a fan of the new character art or UI but this could be the best version gameplay balance wise and that's great.
I didn't see the livestream, but those charge items are from DUO's score attack mode. Though in score attack, all they did was add points to your score.

Using them to recharge the gauge seems like the only potentially good change in the game so far.

Better change this cover art to something else. It looks like visual novel or something this way.

What are limited edition contents?! Additional dvd etc?

In Japan, the PlayStation 4 version of Senko no Ronde 2 will cost 4,800 yen via download. Standard and limited physical editions distributed by Kadokawa Games will be available for 5,800 yen and 9,800 yen, respectively. The limited edition includes an original soundtrack CD, “Senko no Ronde 2 Materials Guide” creation materials book, and a creation materials DVD.
not sure if I want to spend that much on a shmup if it's the same price on steam

Graphically, it looks exactly like DUO, which looked better than Rev.X/SP. Doesn't sound like you've ever played DUO, because if you did, you'd easily notice how much better DUO looks when seeing them side-by-side.

Well, assuming the story mode is the same as DUO's, it pretty much is a visual novel. The new artwork is terrible relative to the original though.

Perhaps bad screenshot picks / compression, then? Because those screenshots dont show anyone cool 3d backgrounds Senko and Duo had.

Also mecha models look even more cartoonish.

Being a vs fighting game hybrid, it's really in a different boat than most other stg's.

As with anything, depends on how strongly you feel about the particular title.

that's the damn issue
it's a vs fighting game hybrid that's basically dead in the west and I assume the vast majority of jp players will get it on the ps4 (plus connectivity issues to japan)
people already went "I would buy it if it was $20 but if it's priced like that on steam I'll pass"

with a price like that, it will be dead on arrival on steam with no chance of the game ever becoming active again
just like koihime enbu, $40 game with 3 concurrent players on steam, have fun playing against yourself
it doesn't matter how strongly you feel about a multiplayer game, if it has no players it's a waste of money

Putting aside some potentially valid points about the economic side of things, which is not my forte...

Well, I have been sparring singularly with like 1 friend and nobody else in certain games for over 8 years, and it's still pretty fun. I'm not of the opinion that you need a community to enjoy something. Maybe 1 other person, everything else is a bonus.

There really isn't one. The Senko games have never placed a major focus on just one character, though some are more important than others.

While the PvP aspect is definitely one of the main attractions, Senko has more to offer than just that. There's also score attack and story modes, the latter being very high quality in DUO.

Edit: We also don't know if it's going to have cross-platform play or not. If it does, then you won't have anything to worry about.

Because apparently the idea of an ensemble cast is too much for some people to handle.

Well, whichever character was shown first I assume is the protagonist. It's probably this dude right here.

He's important to the story of DUO, but there are a handful of other characters who are also equally important, some arguably moreso.

I think you should just start with her. She's easy to learn, strong in practically all situations, and fairly high tier.

Yes, her versatility in any situation should help you understand the mechanics w/o much trouble, at least from what little i've played.

To be fair, Lev is also a high tier character. The best Senko player in the world mains him in DUO actually. Lev's only major downside is that he looks and talks like a douche.
