Testicles crossed.

EDIT: btw I don't see how multiple-screen support would be possible technically speaking. i suppose there will be display options for letterboxing...

I actually didn't care too much about this news at first beyond the fact it's a PS4 STG port, but hearing people getting so hyped over this one is getting me hyped over it too.

If you want to spam unfunny meme reaction images long past their expiration date instead of engaging in actual discussion, I think this forum would be more up your alley.

I toughed it out and played through every stage of Darius Burst in the months after release multiple times with all three ships, even when it got to be a real slog, because I was holding out hope for some especially redeeming aspect of the game I hadn't gotten to yet. I know of whence I speak.

No, you've played Dariusburst. You have not played Dariusburst Another Chronicle. Which is almost entirely a different game. I don't foresee them just releasing Dariusburst for PS4, it'd make no sense at all.

You are aware the PSP Darius Burst is completely different from the arcade version, right?

While it'd be a curious (and bafflingly stupid) move on Taito's part, you're discounting the possibility of them doing just a quick HD remake of the PSP version, rather than spending a much larger quantity of time and resources reworking the arcade version and all of its associated content for a home console, assuming they'd know how to squash the arcade version's super-wide resolution onto a widescreen display and still keep it reasonably playable for those who don't have 40in+ TVs.

If it does end up being Burst AC, however, Sony can count another PS4 sold.

I don't think it would be hard to port to home console, actually. Take it from someone who's pretty familiar with how it works. The PC hack did not take all that much work, and all of it would have been cake for someone with the code. I can't imagine a console port would be particularly difficult.

While I'll take your word for it, I'll personally be waiting for an official statement about which DB it is before I cream my jeans. :3

I already told him that. Guess I'm not a reliable enough source.

But let's not be too disparaging about the PSP Burst - it's still pretty good. It doesn't have ACs scale, the boss battles have fewer patterns, the music less varied, the difficulty less polished, the cannon less flexible, scoring less involving, graphics less detailed, etc...

But it's still one of the PSP's best shmups and rather special. I certainly wouldn't say it was a poor game.

I was just about to point out that you told him this at the beginning of last page lol.

Even taking ACEX out of the equation, the pretentious authoritativeness which he declares games inferior with is starting to grow very tiresome. There are plenty of shmups other people like that I find completely unfun, but I don't go preaching to a forum like my analysis is anything less than an opinion/my particular taste, while also neglecting to put any indication into my cynical rants that they are anything more/less than my opinion/particular taste.

*edit* I was going to throw in how ironic his constant usage of the word "hipster" is considering his posting habits, but decided it was a bit overkill and he hadn't used it that much. I then viewed the Phantasy Star topic...

I'm going to be perfectly honest here: I still don't quite "get" the Darius hype. The games just feel kinda average to me.

Is there anything that Darius burst AC does that makes it radically different from the other Darius games, or is it basically the same?

For the series as a whole , I guess that depends on what you're into. If you can't really enjoy or appreciate non-bullet hell affairs, than I can see seeing them as just average.

On the other hand, if you can appreciate what older shmups bring to the table, I think it's hard to call them average by most comparisons to other such games.

What I like about the series (though Gaiden is where I'm most experienced, so forgive me if some of this doesn't apply to say, Darius II):

-Bosses have a ton of personality and variety. They aren't just big targets that sit at the end of the screen while bullet patterns are generated around them. They move around in unique patterns, get up close and personal, force you to switch sides with them, etc. There are tons of cool non bullet based hazards, and the emphasis on destructable parts and weakpoints means that even just shooting them feels different for each boss. Definitely more interesting than the over-before-you-know-it bosses in Gradius and R-Type, and feel more skillful, cinematic, and less memorization dependent (mostly) than either.

-Similarly, zakos and normal enemies all tend to feel pretty different (in Gaiden at least, where I've been the most serious with multiple 1cc routes). You got mechs shooting instant lasers, those little guys who crowd around you in a circular radius before firing twin shots, armored starfish that a tricky to nail their weakpoint, guys that explode into deadly homing kamekaze zakos, etc. Tons of variety, and requires a lot of high speed macro dodging.

-Generally has a nice amount of randomness to force reflexes, always a good thing.

-The levels on different routes tend to all draw from the same enemy pool mostly, but each stage requires such a different strategy that they all really do feel like unique stages and not just rehashes.

-Great presentation

I guess that in a lot of ways, the shmups I enjoy the most tend to rely on trying to overload the senses: bright highly contrasting neon colors, clouds of bullets coming from all directions, a blistering fast scroll rate, thumping techno or hard rock, etc. In a lot of ways I tend to prefer games that have bombast, flamboyancy, etc.

That's not to say that I can't appreciate games with more subtle atmospheres, which is certainly not the case, but I'm more or less saying that when it comes to fast paced action games like shmups I prefer over the top stuff.

I guess that's one of the primary reasons I never really "got" Darius, R-type, or Gradius: they all rely far more on subtlety and deliberation, from the gameplay design to the soundtrack style.

I should probably sit down with Darius Gaiden again and give it a few more gos sometime...

I can't wait. I think I'll download the iOS version again today just to get ready. I know it's nowhere near the arcade or PSP version, but it's still pretty good & well, the music!

Ios version is definitely better than the PSP version, it has 1 more boss + king fossil and also higher textures/resolution and the assault ship
but the IOS version is nowhere close to AC

dariusburst was the reason I bought a PSP

I only hang around in Darius threads so its pretty noticeable to me when someone parrots the same shit over and over again. Noone cares that the Patatpon guys made it. You were wrong the last two times, so there is no reason to believe your third attempt to get other people to stop liking what you dont like will succeed this time.

I'd dig out the post where you assert that DBACEX has no extra bossess but that would probably make me look like an obsessive stalker who remembers every inane utterence you share with us.

The later revisions have gotten better, but Vanilla Burst did look easy and visually bland, at least in the videos I watched. It seemed like every other level took place in a giant iron tube.

I count the ultra-bright neon colors and spritework of Gaiden as bombastic and flamboyant.

Lol, you have to save the Burst Cannon for an entire stage just to use it on the boss.

Someone doesn't know how to play the game at all.

If they really ported AC, I wonder what the best way of solving the screen size issue would be. 50% of black boarders would probably be a bit hard to market to the normal crowd.

... if they wanted to minimize their market sure ...

It would be a bit surprising if they fell back on the "zoom function" they used in the (up to 3 monitor) Darius II home console releases - don't recall the zoom being all that popular. Also "Dariusburst: Second Prologue" (2012) was a port of the original Dariusburst (2009) even though it released after Dariusburst: Another Chronicle EX (2011) - and the aspect ratio issue may have been a factor in that decision. The 32:9 aspect ratio of DBACEX could be a deal breaker on the PS4 from a user experience perspective - so a potential PS4 release could also fall anywhere in the range from a simple HD port of the original Dariusburst to yet another remix (possibly based on DBACEX content), none of which is likely to satisfy DBACEX fans.

And awesome. Been meaning to buy the game for a while now, so I suppose this is going to be the time to do it.
