I am both surprised and not surprised that Cho Ren Sha 68K is by far and away the winner by such a margin. Akashicverse and Hellsinker not in the top 10 is surprising considering the love for those games. But then again, a lot of people who played them probably didn't vote here.

Surprised exceed 3rd ended up in the top 10. Good game, but not really top 10-level.

Pretty solid selection on the whole: personally I'm also a bit surprised to see Exceed 3rd as high as it is, as well as Subterranean Animism as part of the Touhou gang, but overall a good batch o' games.

Interesting that Mountain of Faith ended up as the highest Touhou... I just bought that recently.
I'm glad rRootage at least made HM
Shame that there's no Fast Striker (That should at least be an HM, I think), but I'm not really surprised.
Cho Ren Sha probably at least deserves one of the top places, so that's good

I really love CRS68k, and am glad seeing it take the top spot, even though I'd have to say that Crimzon Clover is probably technically a better game lol (only reason I didn't vote for it also is because I've only briefly played it pirated, but felt too guilty to put any real time into it).

Yeah, especially considering how much better eXceed 2nd is IMO. The game uses Ikaruga's system in a unique way to create something that feels amazingly fresh and unique, but 3rd is just your standard danmaku game that's good but not as good as the games it takes inspiration from imo.CStarFlare wrote:Surprised exceed 3rd ended up in the top 10. There aren't many doujins in the official top 25, but CRS68k made it, I think. Some of the touhous as well (or at least an honorable mention).

I'm just thrilled that Kotsujin did so well. It's the only non-Windows game on the list (excepting JSS, which is special for getting a retail release on WS and X360).
I wish there was more interest in Japanese PC-only shmups - I suspect the MSX, X68k, and PC88/98 have a lot of hidden gems that never get recognized, and I suspect many of them are doujin.

Yeah, I know that the X68000, especially, is kind of a treasure trove of obscure doujins. The only ones I've played are two Caravan games: Zero Rei and Super Star Shooter. Zero Rei is incredibly fun and awesome, but I don't know that it quite has the depth to put it on a top x list. Also, Cho Ren Sha 68k is originally for X68000, so I think it counts as non-Windows, as well

I think vastly more people know CRS for its Winows release but yes, CRS is a great example of the quality that doujins for Japanese computers can exhibit.

Nice to see ring^-27 made it to honorable mentions. It's a great game but I haven't seen much discussion about it on this site. As for Touhou I still don't understand why PCB is considered so high in every poll. Very surprised to see Hellsinker not make it to top10, I somewhat agree on the top5 though. Also really sad to see Zen Ichi not make it to even honorable mentions. I suppose it's not a very known shmup around here.
