bringing PCBs! definitely bringing progear and dimahoo, and will also bring mars matrix and giga wing if i can (these two were requested on the facebook page) :]
Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
Thanks for bringing em all! looking forward to it
Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
^ Is that confirmation that you're going to be showing up???
Also, I've been meaning to try Mars Matrix since the last meet but never got around to it, so I'm looking forward to trying it this weekend (if you can bring it, no sweat if you can't).
Btw, I know we all pirate to some extent and I don't personally have a problem with it, but this IS a game store and all, so if you're going to be "borrowing" stuff from each other then at least try to be discrete about it. It doesn't look particularly good for business if there's people in the arcade swapping bootlegs (especially the weekend after Black Friday), and it kind of puts me in an awkward position since I'm an employee now. And yes, I know that my 360 is JTAGed. The point is, just try to be lowbrow about it.

Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
Totally looking forward to this since I missed the last one.
Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
I'm almost certain to be there, just have to finish up the final parts of my college apps and I am good to go.
I can bring a 360 FSTE if necessary. Also some various arcade parts if anyone's interested in buying Sanwa and Seimitsu buttons/sticks.

Don't worry - I can get a legit copy. I don't want to have you getting fired for my indiscretions.marus wrote:Btw, I know we all pirate to some extent and I don't personally have a problem with it, but this IS a game store and all, so if you're going to be "borrowing" stuff from each other then at least try to be discrete about it. I will keep cash on me for exactly that purpose.KevinDDR wrote:Also some various arcade parts if anyone's interested in buying Sanwa and Seimitsu buttons/sticks.

lol I don't think I would get fired. But yeah, as long as you get the picture.
Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
Great turnout, despite the lack of Mars Matrix. I was really impressed with how many people came. Whatever Bobby and Paul did to advertise must have worked - keep it up!
Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
Thanks again to everyone who came out. I hope all of you had a good time. I think we had a pretty good turnout, which included a lot of newcomers and a few out-of-towners which was nice to see. PORTLAND GET YO ASS UP HERE! Also, as always a big thanks to the man Bobby for staying up super late to get everything set up for us.
The DFK tournament was really exciting, with a lot of intense moments and upsets. In the end EPS21 blew everyone out of the water with his amazing 2-5 run, so a round of applause to you! Also congrats to RNGmaster, who surprised everyone with an amazing upset and just barely nabbed 3rd place, getting a 1-all and putting KevinDDR in his place!

I'll update the 2nd post of this thread with the results. I'll be using that post to keep track of the current rankings and all past tournaments. Speaking of which, if any of you want to go by a different name in the rankings, just let me know and I'll change it. Also, I'm working on getting together some memorabilia and goodies to serve as prizes for the top finishers overall for the season, so keep your eyes open for that!
So, getting right on to the next meet, what weekend works best for all of you? The holiday season is coming upon us, which is both a blessing and a curse in that people will be out of school/work and whatnot but will also be traveling or doing other festive things (I assume). Going with the 6-week theme, should we hold the next meet sometime late in December or would January be better for people? For me personally, I'm going on a trip from December 20th-27th, so sometime late in the month or January would be best.

Great meetup guys, we had a lot of fun stuff to play this time around! Getting a preview of DFK360 for us still waiting on it, Progear, Dimahoo, and sweets/MMP was really great! Thanks Bobby and marus for setting up all the cabs and running the tournament!
I think Kevin, I and some other bemani people are going to road trip up to Vancouver BC at least once to go to their arcades, but no dates are decided yet, when its figured out I'll post it here.

I'm just proud I didn't get last. Then again, never played DFK, so it's mildly excusable.
Also, hello people! I'm James AKA Dragonmaw. Friend of Renard, Bobby, and Marus.

Thanks again for everyone involved with setting this up. I had a great time and was impressed with some of the shmup skillz on display. I'm looking forward to the next meetup!

sorry about the lack of Matrix and Giga - i thought Progear and Dimahoo could use some love - and did they ever get it! :]RNGmaster wrote:Great turnout, despite the lack of Mars Matrix. starting to wish i actually tried during the ranbat, my second run later that evening as 700mil hahahaha
Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
Dimahoo is a bit spicy for me, but I'm inspired to 1cc Progear in the next few weeks.renardqueenston wrote:sorry about the lack of Matrix and Giga - i thought Progear and Dimahoo could use some love - and did they ever get it! :]
Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
It was great hanging out with everybody again and meeting new folks. Hats off to everybody involved for getting together such a great lineup of games and keeping the cabs going. Fantastic stuff!
I look forward to the next one and my vote would be for January. It was cool to have this one aligned with the DFK port release, so maybe we should do something for the Pink Sweets+MMP or DFK BL releases.
(BTW, I'm "PHIL")

Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
Did you want me to put you down in the rankings as wnka? Or as "Phil" (not all caps)? I just wrote PHIL because that's what you wrote on the signup sheet - I wasn't sure if the ALL CAPS was significant or not.
As for the next game, it's not set in stone yet but me and Bobby were talking about doing something that looks less intimidating to newer players - something along the lines of Raiden Fighters which isn't so much bullet hell. However, if people want to, Pink Sweets or Muchi Muchi Pork are definitely possibilities, as long as we can borrow the boards again.

Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
Sounds great. I thought of ESP Ra.De or Galuda, but I reconsidered, because I'm actually kind of good at those games and doing badly would be a disappointment. Both Muchi and RFJ sound great (pinksweetslol).marus wrote:As for the next game, it's not set in stone yet but me and Bobby were talking about doing something that looks less intimidating to newer players - something along the lines of Raiden Fighters which isn't so much bullet hell. Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
I'd like to do at least one of the Galudas at some point. Maybe for the 3rd tourney.
Also, Pink Sweets owns your soul.

Speaking of Pink Sweets, here's a preview of one of the prizes I've scrounged up:

Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
Ha ha, I hadn't thought about it, I was just correlating my posts to my crappy score. Sure, put me on the ranking as wnka-PIL. Thanks-marus wrote:Did you want me to put you down in the rankings as wnka? Or as "Phil" (not all caps)? I personally have no grasp of Pink Sweets or MMP. Yet at least. I was just thinking its cool to have the meets around when the ports are released since someone usually has a copy and we can all take it for a spin.marus wrote: As for the next game, it's not set in stone yet but me and Bobby were talking about doing something that looks less intimidating to newer players - something along the lines of Raiden Fighters which isn't so much bullet hell. Raiden Fighters would be cool. What about Galaga? EVERYBODY knows that game and it would be a good reintroduction to the genre for new players. Does anyone have that board?
Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
Well, the Muchi Pink bundle won't be out until the end of February anyways (the 24th according to the official site), so if we were to do one of those then it would be better to wait until the next meet.
There was a Galaga board in PG earlier, but to be honest I wouldn't be looking forward to a competition for that (at least not for the ranbat, maybe for something else - I could see it being popular). Though again if you all want to we can do it - I'm pretty much picking games based on what I think people would like, so if anyone has a request or wants to second another idea, then post and I'll consider it.

Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
i'd also recommend earlier manic titles to get people into stuff, including the history - stuff like donpachi (of course), v-five, batsugun, mahou daisakusen / sorcer striker, etc - maybe some taito stuff like gunlock / rayforce? these were all shooters that got me into it but were perfectly accessible back when i was still playing nothing but salamander.
Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
I'd vote for something that's already at PG, maybe RFJ or Dodonpachi. DDP would be nice because it's a classic and the scoring system is difficult to master but pretty straight forward. RFJ would be interesting as well, I might have a chance to score well with that one
I'm a big Donpachi fan, but I don't know if we could get a pcb board for a tounrament, same with Batsugun
Edit - That's a pretty sweet prize!

I nominate Batrider. Sorry, but I am personally dead tired of practicing chains. Batrider's scoring is also pretty simple, so I don't see any points against it.
Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
Yeah maybe something non-cave to shake things up, if you choose any of the galuda's for the next round you might as well hand me that nice Ibara artbook now
.
I remember Bobby told me Jeff (that's our PCB loaners name right?) was interested in lending out some older classics, from the sound of it was Toaplan era stuff, which would be fun "pre-cave Cave games." If he has batsugun I'd vote for that as it is quite sub-par in Mame with no music (and I lack a saturn along with said game), and like all other games in a cab, looks way better.
If we can't borrow anything, Batrider or RFJ would be good choices for PG's current stock.

lol, I'm glad to see that certain people are getting into the spirit. Hopefully I won't break your heart by the end of this
About the prize, I want get a couple more things as well (although they probably won't be as nice as the artbook unless I get lucky), so that I can give stuff for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. We'll see how that goes. Also to clarify, they will be for the overall winners for the entire season, not just for this next tournament.
I appreciate all of the suggestions for games to play so far. I'd like to stay away from the Pachi series for now, since we just did DFK. Batrider's a tempting option, since it's already in the arcade and the normal course isn't too intense for newcommers (although I could see it getting weird with the rank control). I can't remember whether or not Jeff has Batsugun. I'll talk to Bobby later to figure out exactly what our options are, and hopefully have the game announced soon.

Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
the scoring is pretty simple, but i've always found Batrider to be really hard - you mentioned Dimahoo was a bit spicy, and even though Batrider is a fave of mine, i routinely can't get through the first level without using a full credit. i dunno how other people find it to be.RNGmaster wrote:seattlexc wrote:Batrider's scoring is also pretty simple, so I don't see any points against it.
Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
Really? Batrider's normal course was probably my fastest (arcade) 1CC. Once you get used to the small, hard-to-see bullets it's pretty easy. You don't even need to worry much about rank control for normal course if you're just trying to beat it.
Re: Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27
What Paul said.
Also, you can alleviate the bullet issue by using the bullet color code. You can even change the color of each bullet type individually.

Hi guys, I'm Dan. I go to UW and stuff, I figure a couple of you (Paul) know me already since Im at PG alot
In any case, Batrider sounds cool for a shmup meet, but when would the next one be?
