Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & RanBats - November 27

Post by marus »

Next Shmupmeet: November 27
Next Game: Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu

This thread is for the regular Pink Gorilla Shmupmeets that will take place roughly every six weeks. At each shmupmeet, there will also be held a ranking battle tournament that will give you the opportunity to earn points to contribute to seasonal rankings for the Seattle/Northwest area. The meets and tournaments are open to everyone regardless of skill level or interests, so feel free to come out and support your favorite arcade!

Meet information:
  • Location - U-District Pink Gorilla Store + Arcade, University Ave N Seattle, WA 98105
  • Satruday, November 27, from 2:00pm until when the store closes
The store officially closes at 9pm, but so far the employees have been nice enough to keep the store open late for us - it's best not to count on it though, unless someone says otherwise

Tournament Information:

Next RanBat - 1.1 - Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu ver1.5

About the Ranking Battles:
At every PG shmupmeet we will hold a tournament for a different shmup, where players will compete for the highest score. Players that place within the top 5 of the tournament will receive a number of points that will contribute to their overall ranking throughout the season. For example, 1st place will receive 5 points, 2nd place will receive 4 points, ect. all the way to 5th place who will receive 1 point. At the end of the season, the player with the highest number of points will be declared the winner.
  • Each season will last for 4 tournaments.
  • The tournaments will be open to all players regardless of skill level or region.
  • You don't have to play at every tournament to be eligible for overall rankings. However, missing tournaments will reduce the number of opportunities for you to build points.
  • There is no entry free - the tournament is open to anyone who wants to compete.
Format/Rules for the tournament:
  • Registration starts at 2pm, tournament starts at 4pm (I'm not going to be too strict about this, but try to show up reasonably on time).
  • Each participant will play 1 credit of the specified game.
  • After a participant has finished playing their credit, their score will be recorded.
  • After all participants have finished playing, the player with the highest score will be the winner.

Also, I made a Google Docs poll asking when you would like to have the next meet, so please answer that when you have time. You can pick more than one answer if you want.

Thanks for starting this thread, Marus!

About the date -- Nov 13 is definitely not possible for me, since I have a pinball league tournament that day. Also, Nov 20 or "20, November" is a date that has significance in the Bemani community and I was loosely hoping, if not planning, to do some sort of Bemani-related event on that day.. So of the options given, the 27th might be the only one that works for me. I'll ask Rob what he thinks.

Well, if the 13th and 20th are both bad, then I guess that leaves the 27th. If that doesn't work for a lot of people, we can also push it back to December.

OK, so far November 27th is looking to be the most popular day, so barring any unforeseen problems I think we're going to go with that for now. I'll make a big post with details and such once I figure out a few more things.

It also happens to be Thanksgiving break for tykes like me. It'll work fine.

Now, what is this RanBats thing?

RanBat = Ranking Battle = the tournament. The title was too long to fit the date so I shortened it.

Yeah, kinda. It just means other people need to try harder :P

Though truth be told, Bobby does most of the work getting everything set up and ready for everyone, so you can't really say that it's my tournament.

If you're the best dude there I'd just not enter. You can still do exhibition runs to show you have the highest score.

In all honesty I kinda got lucky; I'd say in general EPS could school me any day of the week, and everyone else is competent as well. Either way though, I'd like to continue competing in my tournaments, even if it's selfish and unprofessional. On the other hand, if other players don't like me doing so then I'll step down.

Not necessary at all. This is a friendly competition and there ain't no fancy prizes. marus might win, and that's great, but say that the competition game was Dodonpachi. Now, I've been working my ass off to 1cc that game for the past 2 weeks. So say I managed a 1cc, with 30m points. Now marus here can probably get to 2-3 and get about 100m. He'd still high-five me for getting through 1-6. Doesn't mean it's unprofessional for us to be playing together.

Uhh, have you ever actually watched me play Dodonpachi? I think you overestimate my (nonexistent) love for that game.

Though it is really cool that you're working hard towards your goal of a 1CC. That's really what I'm hoping for out of this - to motivate people towards improving themselves.

Just an example. And I do think that being around good players like you, EPS, Bob, and the others is probably the best way for me to feel better about my own skills.

Thanks again marus for helping organize this. Playing Daifukkatsu should be interesting, is there any chance the game will be in PG before the tournament? I wouldn't mind practicing a little bit before hand, but if not I could always just come in early the day of the tournament.

Also, will we be allowed to use the auto-bomb selection? That might make the competition drag on for a while.

Oh yeah, I forgot to ask about that. Do you guys think we should allow Strong type? I personally don't see a problem with it, except that the tournament might take a while - but if anyone needs to leave early, let me know and we can let you play first or whatever.

As for whether the game will be in PG before the tournament... the answer for now is no, but Bobby said he'll try to talk to the guy when we get closer to the meet day and see if he would be willing to lend him the board early. From what Bobby's been telling me though, he doesn't seem eager to part with it, so probably not.

That's ok, I can just show up early to practice a bit. I'm just grateful that guy is letting us borrow the board for the tournament

My advice is go for survival. DFK is pretty friendly to huge combos anyways, so getting a competent score won't be that hard. I have a month to practice, not too bad.

I will also direct you here.

Also, can you request Muchi Pork? I'm really looking forward to trying that one out again.

Too bad my (or probably anyone elses for that matter) copy of the port won't come in till sometime after this meetup. Oh well, I have no objections with the game chosen, assuming bobby can get it lent to him again for this date. I too anticipate everyone using strong style for the OP-ness and autobomb  . Most likely type-C too

If anyone's getting a copy of the port by some ridiculously fast shipping method in time, be sure to bring it in! I preorded mine through amiami and EMS so I probably won't get it till the week after.

So good news (for me anyways) - I'm now officially a part-time employee at Pink Gorilla! Which means I'll be working from the inside to help make the store a bigger part of the community! This also means that I'll probably be taking more of a support role as far as meets go, since I can't exactly be playing in the arcade while on duty.

In other news, I'll probably arrive at the store around 3-4pm tomorrow, and play for a few hours.
