Perhaps Dimensions is coming to PSN, so perhaps we'll get more info soon. Pure speculation of course.

Anyway, my first impression is "Hmmm, interesting, but...too "clean" for the biohorror themed series imho".
Also, the bosses could have used a "proper" graphical update like the stuff they did in Delta and Final.
Re: Pictures and Trailer
Excellent - that's all the same screens I got sent from MS. Saves me the effort.
Horrible style to it I think...
Re: Pictures and Trailer
Yeah looking at those screens the game seems downright ugly to me.spadgy wrote:Excellent - that's all the same screens I got sent from MS. Saves me the effort.

I see now this is going to be a butt-ugly 3D remake of R-Type I and II. Might as well just go buy R-Types. Why does ANYONE think 3D in a 2D game is an "enhancement"? Recently, Capcom did it with Mega Man X, and Konami with Dracula X as well. Both are hideous and soulless compared to their 2D originals.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Ok so the 3d looks a little pony but I think for 800MS points(I'm guessing) its worth it for the 2 orig games alone (as long as they haven't been messed up to accommodate that 3d tilt view thing.
And the two cabinets looks sweet too.
And multi-player makes it a great improvement, Ok easier by the looks of things (respawn wise) but could be great fun
And global leaderboards?
Much better than some of the crap on XBL!
I wonder what the achievements will be. I hope they don't pussy out on them
personally i cant wait

Honestly, I quite like the look. Not that stupid tilted view, but that's clearly optional, given that there are plenty of shots there showing it viewed from the traditional angle.
The new look is *maybe* a bit too clean, but I think what's selling it to me is that, in the thumbnails, it looks exactly like the original games - simple and colourful. The low poly coount works in its favour.
Of course, they could well fuck up the gameplay.

Well, let's be fair here...Dux seems to follow a completely different artstyle and mood. The first two R-Types however were never designed with 2001 (or Portal if you want...) style SF artdirection in mind. I always felt that Irem went for the gritty and organic when it came to landscapes and shipdesigns. Therefore, Dux looks better because it fits the clean artstyle while R-Type doesn't.FIL wrote:The screenshots for Dux look better and thats on the Dreamcast.
Also annoying that they'll allow remakes on XBLA but don't want arcade ports anymore.
Also, as Kiken already pointed out, the two original games are included so the arcade ports you're asking for are simply embedded into the remake.
This whole thing is kinda funny though because I clearly remember wishing for a HD remake of the original R-Type in some older thread months ago. Guess I got my wish now...not exactly the way I wanted it though. Could have been worse...

The graphics look awesome, and I don't see why the perspective couldn't work. I own Dracula X, it's fine on the PSP; the 3D looks good. (The biggest problem, IMO, with Mega Man X7 is that you can't play as X until you beat the game with another character, which, due to the difficulty of the game-not the 3D-is almost impossible.)
And take a good look at the trailer for this on gametrailers.com-does it look like the player's view is seriously hindered in any way? Not to me.
This game looks awesome, and it's certainly cheaper then trying to buy R-Types on Ebay; I'd get it in a heartbeat.

I want sprites too, but as with most of the XBLA, PSN and WiiWare games, they're made in flat looking 3D polygons or whatever and have a very FLASH-like look to them.
Of course I wish we could have actual sprites, be they in SD res or HD res.
The original games as they were in the arcade will be playable in this release, but AFAIK the remakes have these graphics, either in a normal perspective or the new 3D 3/4th perspective.

Sounds pointless to me. Just makes it easier for people to bitch about how they beat the game in a half hour and there's no reason to play it again.All-new Infinite game mode. Assuring completion of games regardless of skill level

Darn those 3D graphics. If only they were optional OH, WAI-
At the very least we get to play the very first "true" two-player co-op R-Type. For Leo, they changed the gameplay and Z-Out you couldnt have the force device in two player. Ive often wondered whether this was a hardware or balancing issue. I can imagine having two forces on screen and respawn would make the game a totally different experience.

See, the moaning about 3D visuals is really puzzling me, because... well, look at those two screens above. They've obviously made a serious attempt at ggetting the polys to look like hi res sprites, and I think they've pulled it off.
Dave, the problem with that perspecitve is that it's impossible to accurately judge the ship's positioning in relation to enemy bullets. I'd place some good money that it'll be the cause of many unfair deaths.

Funny how us "Xbox kiddies/Xbots" are totally pissed off about the cancellation of RSG and the new Treasure shooter, are ragging on the recently announced Power Up Forever, and have bought (or will buy when released) Rez HD, Ikaruga, Raiden Fighters, Raiden 4, Death Smiles, Dodonpachi, Ketsui, Otomedius, Trigger Heart, Omega 5, and such yet we're maligned by the likes self-proclaimed leet shmup fans like yourself who basically just want to show that they're more concerned with being asses than actually playing shmups.Jockel wrote:Now this totally explains the "Dimensions" title.
But who on earth would play this in crappy, confusing 3d?
Oh wait lemme guess: xbox kiddies.
From the press release since you clearly have issues with reading comprehension....
It's BOTH the original games with the original 2D Sprites and the option to play in the new 3D Mode if someone is so inclined. Both versions will have co-op and achievements....and you don't want this why? Nevermind....if this was a PSN/WiiWare release you'd probably be having an orgasm, clearly you just wanted an excuse to show your bias. For the first time, “R-Type Dimensions” allows multiplayer co-op play locally or over Xbox LIVE for up to two players.* Fight through all 14 Bydo-infested stages in the original 2-D or all-new 3-D graphics with the ability to swap back and forth between the two seamlessly.
This is actually a great package, it's got the original versions for shmup fans and a version that's more appealing to the casual market...to me this seems like win-win.
They haven't been cancelled, just put on hold.Zero Gunner wrote:Funny how us "Xbox kiddies/Xbots" are totally pissed off about the cancellation of RSG and the new Treasure shooter,Jockel wrote:Now this totally explains the "Dimensions" title.

True...it's entirely possible that these games could come back, but let's be honest here, it's just not going to happen. The 360 has finally gained some ground in the last two months in Japan (not much, I know) and has an influx of shmups coming (R4, Otomedius, DDP, Ketsui, DS)...if anything now would be the time for Treasure to press onward with their games as the titles I mentioned would only expand the consumer base for Treasure's products. Additionally the 360's success in the west, especially recently with the price drop, should only encourage Treasure. Instead they're basically walking away from the projects.bcass wrote:They haven't been cancelled, just put on hold.
My point however was that Jockel's insults at the Xbox crowd were basically unfounded and contradictory to the fact that us "xbots" are very much embracing the better shmups on the console...the only impedance being cancellations/holds and titles being restricted to Japan.

....Looking at the few fairly impressive looking screens of the remakes of R-Type I & II, it makes me want something similar done with Last Resort and Pulstar. Too bad those games weren't as big as R-Type.
I am also reminded of the never-completed game Native for Atari Jaguar...
I have nothing to complain about. I'm not a fan of the super high res FLASH-like graphics that is commonplace on XBLA & PSN, but the developer is doing its best. This is one of the few XBLA games that I would (will) actually purchase.

Agreed, this is the perfect way to handle such a release. The old versions benefit from being re-released on a new platform with new features (online co-op/achievements) which makes old-schoolers happy and the new versions offer players that would be turned away from the old versions' "dated" graphics the opportunity to still enjoy the games. I'd love to see more of these type of releases....games like Ghost N Goblins, Thunderforce, Strider, Final Fight and others would be awesome candidates for a retro/remake packaging like this (although I'd prefer the remade versions to be sprite-based like the predecessors).gigadrive32 wrote:....Looking at the few fairly impressive looking screens of the remakes of R-Type I & II, it makes me want something similar done with Last Resort and Pulstar. I would love to see games like Altered Beast, Ghouls 'N Ghosts (DaiMakaiMura), Shinobi, Final Fight, Strider, Shadow Dancer, Golden Axe, UN Squadron and many other late 80s/early 90s games remade with updated visuals & features for XBLA & PSN.
As long as they're done at least as well as R-Type Dimensions appears to be, meaning they stay true to the originals and not try to make new games. I'd say the remade Fantasy Zone (2003) and upcoming FZII (2008) on PS2 are good if not decent examples.
Like you, I would prefer the remakes to be sprite-based like the original games, but I don't know of any examples of that, to show what something with remade sprites looks like. I can only point to the few examples of well-done remakes that use 3D graphics on a 2D plane, like Fantasy Zone. Perhaps there are some new sprite-based games I have forgotten about or just never knew of. (racking my brain trying to think)
I also prefer them to be straight remakes of the originals rather than new games. I was kinda disappointed with Ultimate Ghosts 'N Goblins on PSP, and like everyone I hated the 3D remake of Golden Axe on PS2 a few years ago. Sega should have given us the remake of AfterBurner II instead which was better if not great.
I have yet to see the recent 1942 and Commando games on XBLA.
I'm dying for a new Choplifter. That game is just begging for a remake. Sega actually did one way back in 1985, it was an 8-bit arcade remake of the 1982 computer game, it rocked. It was like a generation ahead in audio/visuals and played well.
Thunder Force II (X68000 ver), Thunder Force III and IV, are also on my short list of games that should be remade.
