Insert Credit has officially banned the word 'shmup'
God that guy is a dumbass... trying to sound intelligent, yet in the process insulting a perfect example of the beauty that is the English language -- what is, imho, a perfect abbreviation. A perfect condensing of a sem-complex term into ONE SYLLABLE, and one which visually rolls off the mind's tongue too. If he runs around saying it out loud, or thinks most people do, he's dumber than I thought. I like "shooter" personally... and if you need to clarify more there's a host of ways to do so.
Also, even though I am learning Japanese, I have decided that's it's RETARDED to try and work into English sentences true Japanese pronounciations of Japanese words that have established English pronounciations already. Don't say "ka-ra-o-ke", say "Kareeokee" or however English-speakers say it. Don't say "Tou-kyou", say "Tokyo" the way we say it. If you're going to do shit like that, you might as well replace "Japan" with "Nihon", or "yen" with "en". You'll end up sounding pretentious and your sentences will sound FUCKING GAY (I think I make exceptions for Japanese names though). Japanese syllables (or morae, to get technical?) are so far removed from English ones that they don't work in well at all, that's why we have equivalents, and vice-versa for the Japanese (Only problem is that the Japanese don't learn English pronounciation properly, even in English class...). Words we borrowed from the French for example may be a bit harder to pronounce, but the syllabic flow is still similar to that of European languages, so we generally keep it untouched (I guess you learn a decent bit about the French language just from the French words we use).
I wanted to reply on their forum, but they aren't worth making an account for :P So I'll post my rant here. The second paragraph will only make sense if you read all their posts regarding.

I think we should ban the word "credit" over here at SHMUPS.COM
No more use of "One Credit Clear", then again, we have the abbreviated 1CC.
When typing this out, we should say 1 quarter clear (not credit, becuase I never liked that word)
Then again, if we say 1 quarter clear, how much does it cost to play a game in Japan?
The "otaku's" can say "1 Yen Clear"...or something.
The Brits... 1 Pound Clear!
Yay! Lets confuse everyone now.
I'm only kidding of course, the banning of words is just plain silly!
Speak your mind.
"Shmups" and "Credit" are beautiful words!

Well I think I was able to extend an olive branch of peace in the thread there, no need for anyone to be mad anymore IMHO. I honestly don't think they mean any ill will to us or the site, so neither should we toward them. They have been polite and friendly to me.
He said he didn't like the word shmup. "Banning" it there is a little extreme maybe but ah well, it's his site. *shrugs*

lol, gawd, I hope not
Rommel was just a nuisance, but, you have to admit, the Shmaparoo stuff was kind of funny on a 3rd grade level, especially considering the topic of the thread
I've been around here since there was a forum, maybe since before there was a forum. I actually got handed the proverbial keys to the site for a few months between when Malc decided to quit shmups for the first time and Akira got back online from one of his frequent disappearances and did Mk2. Wasn't much good at HTML, so I was no longer needed by 2001 I think.
Not too many people left over from the "old forum" or the "old, old forum". The Postman, etc.

I suppose I could understand the frustration. If you were a gamer who'd been playing "shooter" or what-have-you since the seventies, and only in the last few years your phrase for them has not only been hijacked by those damned Halo freaks, but all you're left with is some silly sounding British slang term. If that's how you felt, some anger might be in order.
As long as the genre has had a name to me, it's been shmup. I knew of the games, I played them, but not enough that I ever needed an umbrella term for the genre. But when I got into them, I encountered many phrases. Shmups, shoot 'em ups, shooters, side-scrolling shooters, many, many phrases. But in my pursuit of information on MUSHA, I first discovered shmups.com, and its been my phrase of choice every since.
I've said it out loud too. I was laughed at. But there was a good chance I would have been laughed at either way. I tried to bring Ikaruga into a conversation about DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball, it wasn't going to end well.

Could have sworn it was Shmaparoos or something. I need to get another saturn and boot up SG and RSG.
I'm glad we don't have any more board terrorists.
So... you coming out to the next annual "hotter than hell" AZ shmupmeet? Shouldn't be too long before the next one.
You got a hardtop with a decent engine?

haha I know it wasn't you. I was just kidding. lol And yeah, when I was younger and angrier the "Spamperoo!" thing annoyed me but I laughed at it more after awhile. Billy mainly had me gritting my teeth because of the bad aftereffect of Rommel.aurang wrote:lol, gawd, I hope not

Turbo Ted was funny. I miss his fake reports of "I snuck into Sony of Japan HQ and saw a top secret video of Axelay 2 in action."

Roger is still here. Otherwise yeah, it's you, me (I used to be Kosh just in case you didn't know, changed to my real name with a 1CC moniker for a more 'shooter/real life' feel rather than the Babylon 5 fan service), Twitch, Roger and I think Zach is a major old timer too. Try not to be too much of a stranger. Grant is missed. He used to bug me sometimes when he first joined but we ended up agreeing and enjoying each other's posts more often than not. After awhile he was one of my fave posters. Not too many people left over from the "old forum" or the "old, old forum". The Postman, etc.

Oh yeah and Aurang, I have a wicked crazy memory: I remember one old post of yours way back in early '99 (not too long after when I first visited the forum) where you were making fun of R-TYPE Delta's soundtrack saying "Uh oh, looks like Irem has been beating the alley cats again." When I read it I took it all serious and was offended.

And neglect your copy of Fire Shark for the Genny?! Sacrilege!I need to get another saturn and boot up SG and RSG.

Dang, I remember that post about Delta. The level 2 music was great, like the old RT games, but I can't say I ever became a fan of the rest of it.
Remember the Japanese VG music site I found? "PS I Love You" that had the whole Delta OST on it.
I still think the NES Sky Shark has the best box art of any shmup ever, complete madness, look at the anger on your pilot's face!

Hey Alph...back in the late 70's, things were easier to classify though, they were widely described as "Space Shooters" or "Space Games" because they all were in "space". Other than that, thats pretty much all you had to play...besides racing and sports games.
The term "scrolling shooter" doesn't work for me as explained by Dylan, in which case a game such as Halo can scroll in any given direction.
Sounds to me that this guy wants to create his own vocabulary for his own special "elite" club. Which is fine, I guess. Next thing, he'll have a passcode just to enter the exclusive website.
When it all comes down to it, its just a type of video game...there should be no need to get carried away with such trivial things such as banning words used to describe a genre.
With the effort used to coin new terms...some could have 1CC a few shmups...oops, sorry! I mean "Forced Scrolling Vertical or Horizontal Sprite Based In a 2D Plane, But Yet Sometimes In 3D Mostly Featuring Spacecraft, BUT Not Limited To I.E Flying Robots/People/Dragons Where Grabbing Powerups Are Usefull to Aid the Player. Bombs Or Bombers are Provided for use at the PLayers Discretion" type games.
How about, "No, not like Quake'!!?? That works.
BTW: This post is pointless and worthless...just as is the baning the term "Shmups".
I totally agree. That's the look of someone who's kicking ass and taking names. Plus Sky Shark is the first shmup I ever own. Extra special.aurang wrote:

Edit: Forgot to add, now this is truly "point-blanking".

That is nice box art, but my fave still has to be DOJ.
Ianteh: "I hate this... when I say "shooter" people think I'm talking about Halo. When I say "old-school" shooter people think I'm talking about Doom. When I say "arcade shooter" people think I'm talking about Virtua Cop. There is no more hope for humanity......"
Maybe you should ask them what genre they assign Sky Shark, Raiden, etc. to.
Although...Doom, old-school? That came out around 1992, didn't it? That's NOT what I'd call old. Four years too late for that...
Note: My own term for games like Virtua Cop, Point Blank, and Crisis Zone is "marksman games".

No offense to this site, but Shump is a dumb word. There was already a word for these games previous to any silly UK Commodorecentric periodical deciding that we should call them "shoot 'em ups" (don't know anybody that ever used that one) before further dumbifying the terminology with the unveiling of the make believe abbreviated form of a phrase that didn't need to exist in the first place. Shmup, LOL. "Shooter" is the word I'm talking about. If some softheaded tit can't figure out that I'm not playing Unreal Tournament when I say "I like shooters", well then, he's not my friend anyway. Seriously. If I have to spend more than three seconds explaining what a real shooter is, then I don't need to play videogames with that person. No skin off my ass. Plenty of people to hang out with in the world.
That said, It's fucking ridiculous that anyone would want to ban such a word. What the crap is the internet coming to?

Yeah? Good. Because I did it on purpose to help illustrate what a dumb word shmup is. I know how to spell. Even the made up words that angsty internet obscurists use to set themselves apart from the other nerds.
God that sounds rude, but it's exactly what sprung to mind. I know I'm a huge nerd too, so let's not take too much offense with my harshness. Please?

But don't you agree that shmup is just a good a word as "chair" or "car"!?
Nothing "dumb" about the term, it just may sound a bit odd.
Though others seem to disagree, I love the sound of "shmups"!

I am a bit of a nerd/geek too I guess! (and I love it!

I find that after twelve years in colloquial schooling, two syllables come out just as easily as one. "Shooter" works as good now as it did when I was playing Parsec at the age of 10. "Shmup", as a term used to describe the games that this site centers itself around, does not seem to have been designed for the benefit of us shooter players. We all know damn well what a shooter is. The sole reason for the existence of the term outside of a long dead Commodore magazine is so that others will know that we aren't talking about Quake. Well I'm sad to say it, but the people who we wish to be differentiated from have no idea what "shmup" means. So the word does nothing. Except sound silly when sat next to the real word. Shooter or shmup. I choose shooter.
However, I can fully understand it if a person's first exposure to these games was through this site. My biggest reason for adherance (sp?) to the word "shooter" is because that's the term I first heard used in association with these types of games.

[quote="Minzoku"]I think "bling bling" is stupid, yet it's now officially in the dictionary!
In the end, all that happens is Insert Credit has made it public how to cheese him off

Ahh...don't even get me started on these new/hip/trendy/stupid terms.
I also dislike Bling-Bling, also "Pimping" a ride, sounds dumb as fuck to me!
I fucking HATE being called "Dogg". Back in my day, it was "Man", and that was just fine.
Sup, is pretty annoying as well.
Basically any common trendy "Rap" associated lingo. "aiyt"?
I also can't stand someone who talks like their from the ghetto, when they obviously aren't.
I swear, a manager where I work actually refered to me as "Dogg".
I was like, "Whatevah Beeyatch!" (just kidding)
White people, Mexican people, please don't talk like this. Its only cool if youre black, or possibly from the ghetto, which most aren't.
Most people suffer from severe identity crisis these days.
