I didn't realize there's no release date for the West. I'll just wait.

kinda surprised to hear that about the brooks converter, most of my fighting game buds use them without issue

but then again, pretty much all of them are using the ps3-ps4 converters, so those may work with less lag

I'm not a super huge fan of the DS4 for this game. Not that there's anything wrong with it, modern controllers just don't scream "shmup ergonomics" to me. I miss when controllers didn't have two dumb analog sticks gumming up the works. Wish my PS3 Saturn controller would work with this, but it seems like only certain buttons do anything.

could also be that it's an EX-SE being fed through it and not something like a VX-SA. I'm going to try again tonight just for the sake of making sure I'm not crazy, but yeah it was a significant difference between the ps4 controller and my stick :(

If you look at the latency tests (http://www.teyah.net/sticklag/results.html), the Brooks converter PS3->PS4 adds 1-2 frames of lag. Maybe the Xbox->PS4 converter is similar?

DS4 was kind of laggy on my original revision versions, but once I plugged in the new DS4 (with visible light bar in touch pad, model CUH-ZCT2U), and turned on the "Use Wired" in PS4 controller settings (instead of "Use Bluetooth") it seemed to be just fine.

Preference drew me back to using sticks instead of the DS4, but if you are using one, I recommend the above.

So PS3 sticks work, but I only got them to work as the second player.

Theres gotta be a way to disconnect/switch the first player controller so the game thinks the stick is 1P instead of 2P.
I'll probably mess with the settings a bit when I get home

When you get a chance, try it out. Maybe it was just registering as 2P, and there's some way to get it to work. I don't really know how one would get it to register as 1P, but maybe you can. The only buttons I noticed doing anything were start and R2, which seem like "general system" functions. So there's some hope yet, I guess.

When people talk about Golden Bat, are they talking about type-C Wild Snail or what? Is there anything particularly special about it? Also, do other ships have varying names or is it just (for example) Gain A-B-C-D?

Golden Bat is Wild Snail-ABC (press all three at the same time, or just press nothing and let the start screen time out while hovering over Wild Snail). It's Wild Snail but a little faster and with a marginally smaller hitbox. The Garegga ships have different names for each variant, the Mahou Daisakusen characters don't.

Is there any reason why (it seems to me anyways...) Golden Bat is mentioned more often than the other alt ships? Like, does vanilla Wild Snail have a larger hitbox than other ships or something, making Golden Bat essential to evening the playing field? The impression I'm getting is that even though in any other shoot-em-up reducing your hitbox size would be the holy grail, in Battle Garegga it's kind of an unkind trade-off because then you whiff medals.

I'm expecting and hoping that M2 follow this up with Batrider and Bakraid at some point. Batrider's kind of a no-brainer because it's never been ported and the characters/teams are so awesome, but I feel like... most people don't like Bakraid? I really like the charge-up shot and the chaining system, anyways. Gives me more second-to-second goals.

But I guess I should worry about playing Battle Garegga for a couple more months at least :wink:

A = default
B = Slightly faster speed
C = Slightly smaller hitbox
A+B+C = Faster speed and smaller hitbox

Hitboxes

It might be worth your time to check out the ST in the Strategy forum, it's really extensive and might answer some of your questions.

You're right that "smaller hitbox" is a bit of a tradeoff because it's also your item collection hitbox, but the difference is very minor (2 pixels of height total) so it's basically just up to personal preference. It seems like most people opt for a C or ABC subtype to get the smaller hitbox, but plenty of top-level players regularly use B subtypes too.

I almost exclusively play iron mackerel of the ws variants now because the slightly bigger hitbox helps a tiny bit with the rails on stage 4.
If you don't care about that sort of optimization just stick with Golden Bat and you might make some crazy tight dodge on Bh2 or Glow Squid.
Or if you're new and want to clear: use Miyamoto C.

I presume some people just opt for the bigger hitbox because it's such a minor difference (doesn't even affect the width) and pressing B is easier than pressing A+B+C. Most people probably would never notice if they weren't told C and ABC have smaller hitboxes. People always go for B or A+B+C for Wild Snail because Wild Snail is so slow and every bit of extra speed helps.

I agree with Eaglet that Miyamoto-C is best for a basic clear - the speed may be off-putting at first (ABC even more so - you really don't need that extra speed boost) but it helps with macro-dodging a lot of patterns as well as with keeping the medal chain. Miyamoto's options are super powerful as well - just two is more than enough for the first five stages - and they don't feel weird like Gain's. If you limit your option powerups you even control rank better than Golden Bat (Golden Bat's piercing shot is detrimental to rank) while having comparable power. Golden Bat's probably the best choice among the Garegga planes though.

Miyamoto's rank increase is really low while Wild Snails is pretty high.
His options are also way more powerful for anything other than speed killing bosses imo.
During the scoring runs i've played with Miyamoto where i've had AF at 15Hz (makes rank much harder to control) from the start and milked everything you should with full power the rank has been the same as rank controlled 10Hz Wild Snail.

Miyamoto also handles higher rank much better since the options are as powerful as they are. Glow Squids last form for an example is hell for piercing ships because of the destructible bullets.

Also... I'm kind of on the fence about this but i'd say Silver Sword might be an easier clear than Wild Snail if you know what you're doing and get used to the hitbox. The bomb is really good for survival and rank increase is low.

Yeah, Miyamoto's options are nuts. I... really like Gain though. His options just look and feel so satisfying, like they're tearing through enemy armor.

Btw, is there some way I can get scores to save between games? Did I mess something up in the options? Seems like it resets every time I start up my PS4.

I haven't cleared yet (on Blackheart MK2), but I prefer Bornam over Miyamoto.

I don't know if Miyamoto is actually easier, but I really hate his speed. It's not that I can't deal with it, it's just that it makes some of these beautiful and fun patterns feel ugly. I find the dodging more fun with Bornam's more moderate speed.

I am having no issues with my Brooks X360/XBONE to PS4 converter. Did you upgrade to the latest drivers and are running it in Tournament mode? Getting it to run in latest update did help improve performance. Also, it could always be your display that is introducing lag. Makes me shake when the time comes for me to buy a TV.

I did 1cc Super Easy and Premium modes. When you take away the autobomb, rank moving, and friendlier bomb pick ups, the game loses it balls. Well there is always Custom mode.

upgraded it out of the box to the latest firmware. might have to pm you tho.
originally thought it might be a display or game issue too so I switched the input from my TV to a monitor but had the same results. switched to the ds4 and the ds4 worked wonderfully.

Did I overlook something, or is there really no news of a western release? I can wait on playing this until I'm able to get menus that I understand.
And in all honesty, I'm still holding out for a physical copy to show up along the road.

That looks sweeet, just did this as well.

Garegga is awesome so far 8D, I love the bullet options (blinking silver ones). Though I just got into Overwatch and there's a bunch of fun Christmas loot to play that for...

Thank you for the translation, Keres. It's been very helpful.

Gonna ask again: Does Battle Garegga not save hi-scores between sessions? Seems like I always have clear scoreboards when I play. Or is it because I fiddled with the options so it wiped everything?

Super Easy and Premium are definitely easy--I can beat them, and I usually can't make it past stage 3 in arcade. With Super Easy, I mean, that's obviously the point. But I'd say using the Premium presets and simply turning off auto-bomb will make for a hell of a challenge without having to fuss with rank control. I don't think it'd really require any further tweaking. I do wish there was a heavier arrange mode that had Bakraid-style multipliers or something, but Premium's pretty fun anyhow. And it's not like the world really needs anything more complicated than vanilla Garegga.

I agree that Miyamoto just kinda feels gross to play as. Way too twitchy, and I feel like I don't have any control. So Gain and Golden Bat are my go-to guys right now.

Not on the in-game scoreboard, no; it's "accurate" to the arcade version that way. The game does save your high scores in the Ranking Viewer, though, and it can auto-save the replays of every run you play (I think that setting might even be turned on by default).
