I dispassionately refused to have anything to do with it. The Thing is one of my all time favourites, I don't want to witness anything to besmirch its good name.

Had it been kept in Norwegian with subtitles and as a prequel as originally intended, I may have ventured out for it.

If the real time pupperty & animatronic EFX used in the Thing prequel without resorting to the use of CG EFX, it certainly would've been legendary (and keeping in-line with the original film's stylized EFX presentation). The various alien creatures created at the EFX shop were quite super detailed (even moreso than that of the original '82 version easily).

Sure, there're a few holes in the prequel (in regards to the events that take place in the original film) in terms of film continuity with the prequel (nothing can be done about that issue anyways).

Perhaps if Carpenter were at the helm directing the prequel, it would've been better. (Of course, that would've been the ideal Thing prequel that the fans would've liked to have seen made. That would mean making sure the events in the prequel were accurate to the outcomes as shown in the '82 version and absolutely no deviation from that, period.) But since we have the current prequel version as it is, it'll have to accepted as official.

The ending of the prequel that leads into the beginning of the '82 version was pure magic/stroke of genius.

Sorry, missed this. And yes, he's clearly a Londoner doing his best Jason Statham American. It's embarrassing. I cringed at the point where he pronounced 'with' as 'wiv'.

Well you know we Americans are pretty dumb. That's why every foreign accent is changed into an English accent for us. Because it's like, still English so we can understand, but weird enough to where we can be like "whoa who are these weirdos?"

No, no, no, no, no! As I've said before, strip out the special effects from the '82 Thing and you still have a creepy paranoia-soaked horror movie of ratcheting tension populated by identifiable characters who respond to their situation realistically. You'd have John Carpenter's "Prince of Darkness." Strip the special effects out of the Thing prequel and all you'd have would be an exotic locale rampage slasher even lazier than Jason X.

Practical effects would have been an improvement, sure, but if there's one thing "Speed Racer" should have taught us, it's that amazing visuals alone can't buoy a crap script.

Prometheus isn't as bad as TS. That one's a real watch once and bin jobbie.

Lol, he's actually much better in that clip than he is in Prometheus!

Trust me, being English, in Prometheus you can really hear the accent cracking all the way through. I knew he was English before checking his IMDB.
In the above clip, it's much more difficult - all credit to the director. Ridley probably just rushed it.

Yeh, I have to say that his accent wasn't great in Prometheus. I'm not sure what region he was going for, but it was a bit lazy compared to Stringy in The Wire, where he was 100% convincing. Just like James Bamber in BSG, who I didn't detect was a Brit throughout all seasons of the show. Good work, James. Good work, Stringy.*

NB. "Stringy" was the character's name in the original screenplay transcript.

Well, The Wire is revered as pretty much top shelf of the last 20 years. It's a character driven show though.

He plays an American general or something in 28 Weeks Later, but he has very, very few lines.

You should veg out one month and blow through The Wire and Breaking Bad. You may stop ragging on movies b/c you'll realize most of the talent is focusing on the small screen now.

That won't stop me ragging on movies (the opposite probably.) I've been told by everyone that TV is far superior to movies, and I believe it. I just struggle to find time to commit to anything cos they're so long. I tried to watch Heroes recently and did about 5 episodes (was a bit drawn out tbh.)

I mainly watch episodes of the original Twilight Zone these days, as they're self-contained stories so I can go at my own pace.

Heroes redefined jumping the shark... somewhere around Season 2. It was a little too melodramatic and polished for my liking. Most *good* shows now are no more than 13 episodes a season. Pretty tolerable, and I guarantee you I have more shit on my plate (literally) than just about anyone.

Actually I've come to realize more than anything else, Prometheus reminds me of Altered States (1980); another weird mess of a film that wasn't quite sure whether it wanted to be horror or sci fi and ends up not being much of either. Similar in vibe to Cronenberg films from this period; it is impossible for me not to like Altered States, yet it clearly could have been a much better film--especially if it had tried harder to make some kind of sense. Prometheus is the same sort of affair for me. It has more faults in part because it is trying to do more (Altered States is limited in scope), but ultimately it's a creepy, messy film that feels poorly thought out but has its heart in the right place.

Oh yeah, and Prometheus didn't have this:

Maybe Altered States IS a better film than Prometheus.

This is an area which would have helped Prometheus more. I wish the film could have gotten a lot weirder. More body horror, more mind-melting. Didn't feel uncomfortable enough watching the film.

That's the lasting impression I have of the movie. As a glossy sci-fi B film it's fine. But it never feels unsettling or invasive. The caesarian scene has an inherent terror to it, but that' s not what I mean. The Saw films do that too.

Pre-release, after a new trailer conspicuously blurred out the squid thingy in the medipod scene, someone speculated Shaw's offspring might actually be her unborn child mutated by Engineer technology. Turned out to be a jumbo facehugger. Same as the old facehugger, this one's just really big. As a giant face-fucking squid it certainly hits the spot, but it's not interesting or creepy. David is the only intriguing thing about the movie.

Actually that movie was very cool! One of the few modern sci-fi Hollywood films with a good old-school feel, just like Predator 3.
Dialogue, plot and action were excellent and the story spans in multiple locations giving the audience a sense of variety.
Especially the dark sinister & ominous Dialogue in the end, between the dead woman doctor that had been fused into the machine's sentience (inclining that she had played a great part in the rise of the machines and thus cheating death) and the terminator Marcus Wright and the way it was revealed to him of what he really was, was just epic.

So, basically what we learned from Prometheus so far, is that running around in alien planets and caves, there is a pretty high chance that you'll get mouth raped by some alien xenomorph or worm on steroids!

Also the script writer ran out of ideas at some point and decided to copy the black oil from the X-Files!

Sorry haters:
The studio's big summer bet was Ridley Scott's Prometheus, June's sort-of Alien prequel. The $130 million-budgeted film grossed a solid but not spectacular $303 mil- lion globally, putting it right on the franchise bubble. Fox confirms to THR that Scott and the studio actively are pushing ahead with a follow-up (stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are signed) and are talking to new writers because Prometheus co-scribe Damon Lindelof might not be available. "Ridley is incred- ibly excited about the movie, but we have to get it right. We can't rush it," says Fox president of production Emma Watts, who also has overseen the successful reboots of the X-Men and Planet of the Apes franchises. A Prometheus sequel would be released in 2014 or 2015.

Checked out the 1080p version of Prometheus and have to say it is quite stellar. There's even a deleted scene where the Engineer does speak before going berserk on his human visitors. Watching the real-time puppetry with the new Alien at the conclusion of the film was fascinating as well (using green-screen process, of course, and in conjunction with later added-on CG effects courtesy of Weta Digital).

The infamous gut-wrenching scene of trying to remove the alien facehugger entity from the womb, the studio was originally mulling over a PG-13 rating without blood effects but opted for blood in that particular scene for more realism. So thus with the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America), it gave the film a solid R rating with it's advance film screeners. (Of course, a lot more scenes would've been edited out to achieve such an PG-13 rating besides that particular scene.) So be it.

Well this sucks. It now seems that the only way you can get the complete experience with this movie is to own it on blu ray DVD, and have an Apple or Android mobile device:

And people think George Lucas is greedy? :? I'm not even sure if it would be worth it to get this on "regular" DVD.

Yep, the wait is almost over with the highly hyped 10/09/2012 street release date of the Blu-Ray version of Prometheus stateside. The bundled Prometheus Blu-Ray set that Target is selling, comes with a bonus picture booklet. Not even the bundled Prometheus Blu-Ray set being sold at Best Buy (starting tomorrow) has that nifty cool bonus either.

Protip: Go to your local Target when they first open up for business at 8am sharp and you'll have no problem picking it up. As always, it's first come, first served.

Will surely pick it up tomorrow indeed.

The other alternative to watch Prometheus in 1080p format is to download it off of the 360 Marketplace. It's a whopping 11.23GB sized download at best (with some bonus content shown afterwards at the conclusion of the film) -- clocking in at an overall 2 hours and 39 minutes running time.

According to the imdb site, here's a list of notable Prometheus continuity errors: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1446714/trivia?tab=gf (would've taken a sharp and fast eye to track/spot them all down upon watching it on the big screen a second or third time).

Actually I still think the complete experience would be if you had a 35mm projector and a really big screen (and room to put it in). A bar would help.

Actually, the best way to get the experience of this movie is to splice together footage from the original "Alien" with "Jason X." Every time someone in the original Alien is about to do something that would make sense in this situation, cut to the space-kids in Jason X smoking space-pot and having gratuitous premarital space-sex. Every time Jason is going to hack someone with his machete, skip to the facehugger scene, but mess with the contrast so it doesn't quite look like a face hugger.
