Is Turbo Team's captain and talisman wussing out? I would have thought a player of your skill would have been up for the challenge of a difficult and rewarding game.Rob wrote:Icarus wrote:Pussy.Rob wrote:I won't be playing RF Jet if it is selected.

It's not like RF1, RF2 and VP1 are any different.Rob wrote:Embarrassing explaining this (again). Fast bullet manic shooters = too much "stress" (even though I have enjoyed these games) = overproduction of stomach acid, serious pain.
I would've loved this 4-5 years ago.
Heck, any Seibu at high rank is the same. Fast bullets + snipers = stress.

I hate Raiden. It's Boring. RFJ seems pretty cool. I have no idea about RF1&2.
RFJ gets extra points from me because it resets fast.

As much as I suck with score play, I like DX very much and can agree with above statement.Icarus wrote: …I'd take DX over I and II any day.
It is hard for me grasp concept of playing shoot them up like puzzle game. Only puzzle games I enjoy were Tetris, Bust-a-Move (3000 is my favorite), and Lumines.
In the end, I feel that Raiden Fighters Jet will likely win selection. It is after all the most deep in score mechanic. Raiden is the most basic. I am old timer who enjoy just shooting stuff. My teammates are likely to select RFJ -- we went over the game and some scoring things during training camp. I was very intimidated and just took a back seat during RFJ.
What ever the game the Avengers will persevere.
It's not difficult to understand, really. Playing shooting games for score is sort of like piecing together a puzzle, like Sudoku or something, by learning the system, and then what to do in each section. As you gradually become proficient with the system and the game, you can start to build up a bigger picture of scoring methods for each stage based around the system.Sonic R wrote:It is hard for me grasp concept of playing shoot them up like puzzle game. For example, in Twinbee Yahhoo you learn that coloured bells are worth 57k. By exploiting this by levelling up to max and then getting a Michael, you can start to gain greater scores by tapping fire to juggle groups of bells - by only firing a single burst at a group of bells, you'll change at least one into a colour, which you can get, and then repeat again for another colour. (See stage1 replay I posted in the score thread for an example.)
Clouds only appear at specific points in the stages, and by learning where these clouds appear, and how to deal with the obstructions around them, you can maximise your scores. If the problems around the clouds areas are too great, you can force groups of bells off the top of the screen until the screen is clear of obstructions, and then you can work on getting them as colours (my 5mil replay has this in parts).
Scoreplay in all games is like this. Learn the system and the stages, and experiment. I'm not saying that scoreplay is easy, and at times it can be immensely frustrating, but if you enjoy the game enough, you can get past the frustration and get more playtime out of shooting games.

Jittery hands, rapid heartbeat, pseudo-Tourette's, and short-lived RSI I can handle, but stomach pain would scare me away from shmups for a long time.
In fact, being a Seibu neophyte, I didn't know much about scoring tricks until Ayanami showed me. If the original Raiden provided that same primal adrenaline rush that RFJ does, I'd vote for it. I might vote for Raiden anyway if that's what the rest of the team wants, being that I'll be out of town most of next week anyway.

Hey, I'm a speed junkie, not a complex scoring system junkie.Sonic R wrote:In the end, I feel that Raiden Fighters Jet will likely win selection. It is after all the most deep in score mechanic. Yes, but there's a big difference between static puzzles and dynamic puzzles. Sonic R mentioned Tetris and Lumines, which are dynamic, whereas you mentioned Sudoku, which is static. Scoring well in a shmup is like solving a static puzzle (and being able to reproduce the solution with machine-like accuracy and consistency), whereas most puzzle games are more about real-time decision making (since you never know what's coming). Chaining in Ikaruga or DDP DOJ is a lot different from chaining in Puyo Puyo or Tetris Attack, even though they're all puzzles in a sense. They're different kinds of experiences, and although many people enjoy both, I can see how people could like one but not the other.Icarus wrote:Playing shooting games for score is sort of like piecing together a puzzle, like Sudoku or something, by learning the system, and then what to do in each section.

Haha, I started getting the pseudo-Tourette's a while back. I don't know exactly when it started, but if I notice a bullet that is an immediate threat at the very last moment (this happens a lot in Mushihime), then when I hit the direction I need to to dodge the threat, my leg will often twitch. It's... kind of weird and almost annoying.Davey wrote:Jittery hands, rapid heartbeat, pseudo-Tourette's, and short-lived RSI I can handle, but stomach pain would scare me away from shmups for a long time.
Man... I'm glad the stress from shooters doesn't affect me to the point where it causes me stomach pain. I'd probably stop playing video games altogether and just read all the time, since most of the "stress free" video games out there don't exactly appeal to me (not a big fan of RPGs or the like).

Fuck an antacid, I have to take PPIs daily without any Seibu or Psikyo or other stress triggers (I'm not joking when I said "serious pain"). Kids, don't play Psikyo games for 2 hours a day for 1.5 years straight.

Do you guys really get symptoms from playing certain types of shooters? I've gotten really jumpy playing Parsec47, but never had Tourettes-esque bahavior or stomach problems.
That's probably unhealthy in more ways then one.Rob wrote:Kids, don't play Psikyo games for 2 hours a day for 1.5 years straight.
