I always play with Type-B; I didn't know I was making it harder for myself
I just like the look of the helicopter.
Great job on the clear; I hope to do it one day. The other night I got to Tyrannosatan on Deathsmiles vanilla arcade with 3 lives and still managed to fuck it all up.
The game is easy up to that point... I hope it will be my first Cave clear; then I might be able to bore myself by seriously attacking DonPachi!

If you have that many lives you can probably just bomb him completely beginning-to-end if you have to.EmperorIng wrote:The other night I got to Tyrannosatan on Deathsmiles vanilla arcade with 3 lives and still managed to fuck it all up.The game is easy up to that point... Beat Rayxanber III last night which was a cool game. It was also my 100th 1CC!
Lot's of games that were console games or on the easier side of things, but there's some pretty challenging stuff in there like DDP DaiOuJou, Giga Wing, and the R-Type series.

Thanks; that last bit of info was what helped me clinch the clear, getting my first-ever Cave clear! A terrible run too, since I didn't even trigger my usual 45mill extend. It's always the bad runs that end up being what clinch it in the end. Still, a clear is a clear!Keres wrote: If you have that many lives you can probably just bomb him completely beginning-to-end if you have to.That's the reason the 2-UP item from Jitterbug is so nice, too.
Even though I pathetically lost two lives to Jitterbug (cancelling out the benefits I suppose?), four lives was more than enough to go full "JOHN CENA WINS LOL" on Tyrannosatan. It felt so icky bomb-spamming him to death, lol.
Is Bloody Jitterbug the MBL (or 1.1) boss, or is he in normal arcade as well? Usually the 6 different game modes in these Steam ports have my eyes glaze over a bit.

Congrats! Bloody Jitterbug isn't in vanilla Deathsmiles, only in MBL as far as I know (dunno about 1.1).EmperorIng wrote:Thanks; that last bit of info was what helped me clinch the clear, getting my first-ever Cave clear! He's the extremely-difficult-to-unlock TLB in regular MBL, but you fight him no matter what (maybe not if you continue?) in MBL 1.1.

In MBL 1.1, You only have to 1CC everything up to Tyrannosatan.Keres wrote:He's the extremely-difficult-to-unlock TLB in regular MBL, but you fight him no matter what (maybe not if you continue?) in MBL 1.1.
You don't even have to play the extra stages.
Granted, if you want the achievement, you have to beat Bloody Jitterbug in MBL.
On the bright side, once you reach Tyrannosatan, you can die and continue as much as you want, and still face Jitterbug.
Then again, if you can get through half the game without taking a hit, then it probably doesn't matter.

Ahhh. Finally cleared Gradius Arcade.
I knew if I could just clear st4 I'd have a good chance beating the game. Managed to die and recover on the final stage.
My attempt at the 2nd loop was over very quickly.
Thanks to Perikles, for the advice and being da man.

Congrats! My first clear saw me die RIGHT before the closing walls going into the final boss chamber, but I luckily managed to survive that awful assault completely underpowered - and luckily avoided the two wall-arm things by recklessly hugging the right side of the screen before they had a chance to move out towards me.
IMO stage 4 is the second hardest stage in the game, after the last stage.

Congrats, stage 7 is really nasty for recoveries. I once no-missed to stage 7 and lost all my lives on a single checkpoint there. Stages 4 and 7 are easily the toughest stages, 5 and 6 are hilariously easy compared to those (gives you plenty of time to recover after clawing your way through stage 4!).

Finally got H, I, J, and K clears in Dariusburst PSP and H, I, J, K, and L clears in DBAC. I'm pretty stoked since I don't have many clears. I have a few random-ass questions if I may:
-Folks who have played DB PSP and DBAC: how would you compare the two? I would have expected DBAC to be a step up in difficulty, but they feel the same to me. Dark Helios and Great Thing weren't properly rebalanced for the big screen either, Great Thing in particular is much easier in AC. (I have yet to make a dent in EX, my only clear being zone V.)
-I'm thinking about a wide monitor for DBAC, but I would also like not to pay out the nose. I'm looking around. What do you guys suggest? I'd prefer a single monitor (tell me if this is crazy).
-How is the version of Salamander 2 in Salamander Portable? The normal difficulty is strangely easy. Only been up through the stage 4 boss though.

@Blinge: See, I said that your victory was impending.
Delighted to hear it all worked out as planned, and special congratulations for earning your Gradius stripes by recovering in the final stage! Glad I could be a little bit helpful in your quest.
What I find interesting is that some versions of MAME seem to have the improved visuals while others do not. ShmupMAME 4.2 has the old visuals, but when I checked MAME Plus 0.168 the other day I found out that this one has all the sparkling colours. Would be another good reason to return to this one after I'm done with the sequel.

All the Konami arcade ports on the PSP are excellent - when you have the hit box/rank set to the arcade defaults (the Gradius games for example have an option for a smaller hitbox, the Parodius games allow for milder increase in rank) it's essentially perfect (with the exception of Parodius Da! which is based on the more accessible 32-bit ports). The first loop in Salamander 2 is relatively easy, especially since a death drops the rank considerably. It picks up in the final stage (especially the mid-boss and final boss) and the second loop gets quite hectic and challenging.Dirty Casual wrote:-How is the version of Salamander 2 in Salamander Portable? Re: I DID IT! Share your latest 1CCs/other triumphs here...
Even loop 1 of Salamander 2 gets quite insane you play as Vic Viper and don't die. Stage 1-4 are pretty much a joke but for whatever reason the 5th stage is where the rank skyrockets. Of course if you die the rank drops like a rock in the first loop. I don't think rank drops at all in loop 2 but I don't really remember exactly how it works, been forever since I played it.
Re: I DID IT! Share your latest 1CCs/other triumphs here...
Older versions of MAME had inaccurate colors for Gradius and other games like Super Contra, looking much brighter than they should, that was fixed in 2014 or 2015 but the problem is that shmupmame uses an outdated 2013 version.
I think Super Contra still has that problem.

1cc in Fire Shark the Mega Drive!
I've already mentioned the game on a couple threads, I'm sure.
Although the game seems to give you lifes easily, losing just one in the second half of the game can be the end, as you wont be able to progress without the power ups. I used my new HORI for the play, and listening to The Doors (The Soft Parade). For me, it is a nice game to turn off the sound and listen to music. Not saying that the original score is bad, but the game's pace its just perfect for that. I've been playing that game for a while, and took a time to get used to the movement. You feel more like flying on a airplane, thats one of the things I really like about it and probably the reason why it fits the speed and mood of jazz and classic rock.
I tried to keep the RED shot whenever possible. It goes in every direction when fully powered up.
Perfect for that damn kamikazes, the ones that got me killed 90% of the time.

Also, I know we had a discussion about it, but I just like calling it Same! Same! Same! for no special reason.

Nice job! The farthest I've made in the Megadrive port is around... stage 7, I believe. I thought things were too easy (for Toaplan!) until I crossed the halfway hump and the game showed me "who's daddy."

I would argue that the 4th stage is actually really easy stage if you know how to deal with it. I suggest using double with options and shield on that stage. All you have to do is position your ship on the bottom leftish, that way you don't have to to move vertically on the whole stage once you are past the power up section of the start of the stage. The shield takes care of the bullets/zakos flying from the right side of the screen. Zako enemy pops up few times from bottom left side of the screen during the stage, when it happens just position your options to the left side of your ship and it's no problem.Shepardus wrote:Congrats, stage 7 is really nasty for recoveries. Nah, checkpoint recovery is very manageable if you know what you're doing (the same cannot be said about the 1P arcade version), even later loops aren't too daunting. You really want to stick with the blue shot since the flame has significant dead angles all the time, it looks much more impressive than it is.wgogh wrote:Although the game seems to give you lifes easily, losing just one in the second half of the game can be the end, as you wont be able to progress without the power ups.
That's only true for the first loop, however, the fourth stage is by far the hardest one later on, especially from loop 3 onwards. The hatches will spew out extremely fast ships which swarm the screen with bullets, and killing them results in a ton of suicide bullets.Xeno wrote:I would argue that the 4th stage is actually really easy stage if you know how to deal with it.
Re: I DID IT! Share your latest 1CCs/other triumphs here...
By the way I played it, I'm not sure about that, but I'll give it a try using more of the blue shot... I still want to do at least one more loop.Perikles wrote:Nah, checkpoint recovery is very manageable if you know what you're doing (the same cannot be said about the 1P arcade version), even later loops aren't too daunting. I just started playing shmups recently and got my first bullet hell 1cc on Exceed 3rd! Felt intense at the end there.

Shmupmeet last night, someone who had played a few Cave shmups before (Espgaluda, Esp.ra.de) but had never played Futari before was playing Futari BL Original (Another Ver). He'd managed to actually get all the way to Larsa even though he missed the stage 5 extend and had only gotten the first score extend. With some ridiculous dodging he gets to her final phase with like less than an inch of health, no lives or bombs left. I'm playing Aqua Rush, people are watching him, I hear him die and look over, he's like "well I gameovered" and he's getting up to leave and WE START YELLING AT HIM TO KEEP PLAYING BECAUSE HE'S ALIVE - HE HIT THE FREAKING 200K SCORE EXTEND RIGHT BEFORE HE DIED AND THEN QUICKLY SITS HIS ASS DOWN AND GETS THE 1CC ON HIS FIRST CREDIT.
oh my gosh, that night was amazing
