This post might not be organized very well. Sorry.
LUNardei and Icarus: there are two videos in question.
The one I used to check the scoring mechanics is available through here. It's not my bandwidth, so I'm not going to link it any more directly than that :)
The player isn't the best, but the video was clear enough for me to get the numbers I needed. The Stage 1 score (including No Miss bonus) is 810,132 using M-Power.
The video demonstrating the Stage 2 Boss strategy using S-Power is one of SIN's. I don't have a link for it anymore (I got it from hameko several weeks ago).
NTSC-J: that's going into Stage 2 right? After the No Miss bonus, I mean.
I'm not sure it's my highest, but one of the scores I jotted down today was 865,834 after No Miss bonus, using W-Power.
Icarus: the medals given by the Stage 2 trees during the milking procedure are small aerial medals. Assuming no dying during the stage, these are eventually worth 200 points each (100 for pick-up, 100 for bonus). The most I would expect someone to be able to milk would be enough to gain an extra ~800,000 points (8,000 gems) during the stage, or an extra ~1.6 million by the beginning of Stage 3. 1 and 2 million might be possible. I can put in more time with this if it's requested.
Stage 1 boss can be lightly milked. I don't think it's worth it.
I didn't get around to re-testing for Original mode tonight, but in Maniac mode, the first form of the boss times out after 2 minutes and 50 seconds. I can't find my note for the final timer, so I'll assume I died before it timed out :)
Stage 2 boss has a special trick as mentioned before. Leave as many legs as possible intact by its final destruction for an extra 200,000 pts per leg.
Stage 3 boss works opposite of Stage 2 boss. Destroy the upper left and right wings 3 times each for an extra 600,000 points. (100,000 per explosion)
Stage 4 boss can barely be milked, not worth it.
Stage 5 boss can barely be milked, not worth it.

Thanks for that info, it clears up a few things. The only question that needs to be posed now is: is it more lucrative to go for speed (extra enemies and extra gold) or milking (using the outside edge of the W-Power shot stream)?incognoscente wrote:...interesting and important information...
Don't worry about it, if you don't want to do it. Those trees certainly make for developing an interesting stage 2 strategy, there has to be a near perfect route where you can maximise milking from all the available trees on the stage. I'll never be able to find it, personally, as I haven't played it since the PS2 ver. arrived home -_-;;incognoscente wrote:I can put in more time with this if it's requested.

Mmm, I already own the video from Arcade Extreme, it was made by a friend after one hour of play, I think, so it's not important for scoring discussion. But it's clear, ok
I've asked Gemant if he's able to find a full run of the original but seems that we must wait for the mushi/ketsui DVD...
I'm almost convinced that YMN's score came out from a perfect play with perfect application of the things we are saying and no more...
OT for Incognoscente: he's Chow right? Fantastic

Finally received Mushi last week (a 1 month delay due to customs
).
Here's my first entry to the table (Maniac score):
Super Laydock - 6,297,595 - Stage 2 - Default
One game of Arrange mode left me with approx.45 mil, 2 lives left but it didn't feel right playing the game that way, so I returned to the title after stage 3. I wanna try and clear the game on original or maniac before clearing it on arrange.

This, I'll just do the quote and reply format :)
I milk the first tree that appears for its entire duration on screen, then take the outside tree at the first grounded moth. The next section becomes difficult as the available trees are harder to safely milk, and then the one on the left at the midboss is easy again (and lasts for longer than the others as the screen scrolls slower). The second half of the stage has trees, but I haven't worked out a good route and its required dodges yet. Because I have only done the first half, I can only guess that the rest of the stage could give those numbers.
I'll probably look into this more, even if there is no specific request for it :)
I'll also continue my shot-types and shot-powers work. That'll be a fun post when it's done, but I'll place it in the GD thread.
I think S-Power is probably better in the long run as it is nearly, if not entirely, impossible to pull off the Stage 2 boss trick with W-Power.Icarus wrote:Thanks for that info, it clears up a few things. The optimal route is to take a tree from the time it is fully on the screen and milkable until it drops off the screen. If you attempt to buzz every tree, you'll waste several seconds without gems. Each tree is unmilkable until it is fully on the screen and each tree needs a little bit of time to charge up its gems.and also wrote:Those trees certainly make for developing an interesting stage 2 strategy, there has to be a near perfect route where you can maximise milking from all the available trees on the stage. Yeah-- A Better Tomorrow 2 :)LUNardei wrote:OT for Incognoscente: he's Chow right? Fantastic
Finally got the game running on Monday, great fun. Here's my first score to post:
(maniac mode)
I was that close to beating the stage 3 boss... hoping to clear him soon, but I'm horribly inconsistent at this game, just like all other Cave games. I actually died on the first level on this run, but ended up doing a fair amount of milking on the second and no-missing it as well. Somehow this score was about 5 million points higher than the last couple of times I've gotten to that point in the game, thanks to those trees I guess. I also can't seem to get the 1-up to appear -- I'm not even sure I'm looking for it at the right section -- it's the part immediately before the boss, right?

Yes, that's the place (in Stage 3). This may be covered in another thread, but I'll duplicate the information here for you.
There should be 9 segments there that can take damage: 4 in a column on the left, 4 in a column on the right, and a head in the middle. Destroy both columns entirely before destroying the head to attain the 1-up item.

[old score was here]
I am so close to 1CCing this it hurts :<
If only I had one more life.
EDIT:
flux - 295,635,781 - stage 5 - arrange
My best run to date. No hit to stage 5 (with 5 lives). I could have gotten the 1cc, but I got nervous when I got to the final boss and ended up making a ton of mistakes that cost me the completion.

New score for me, although it was a frustrating run. Thought I'd post it though since I finally got that second extend:
(Maniac)
I seem to be hitting a bit of a wall here, need to practice the stage 3 boss and stage 4 more. That last pattern the st3 boss does always sucks up my bombs; I can survive it about 50% of the time in practice mode but I just don't have the courage in a real run yet. I've also been bombing on the 1up head - I can handle the slight movements on the left side, but I get into trouble when I try to head over to the right.
This run was frustrating because I got the second extend and then lost both my remaining lives almost immediately -- I hit the bomb button on the second one but I was apparently just a millisecond too late. Oh well, this game certainly gets more satisfying as you progress.

Try throwing out a bomb during the second last attack right on top of the boss - mrmonkeyman uses it perfectly in his stage 3 vid - it cuts down the length of the final attack drastically.it290 wrote: I seem to be hitting a bit of a wall here, need to practice the stage 3 boss and stage 4 more.
