Why not encode directly to H264 (x264vfw) then? The difference in the end product is so small anyway. I'm quite sure that I couldn't tell the difference between something that was recorded as Lagarith or x264 with high bitrate in a normal release mp4/mkv.
Because despite having a Core i7 processor, encoding directly to H.264 has disadvantages. Like dropped frames and audio errors that come with dropped frames. I would rather make hugeass video files and re-encode them and have the results be perfect every time than mess around with capturing directly to a lossy format and screw runs up.

Even capturing 50hz VGA works:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSpCa-dgajs

This card sure is versatile.

For my own curiosity, I was wondering if anyone here with RGB consoles would like to compare (screenshots) vs the 480p Component from my Wii (obviously once you line double your 240p and process how you want)? Maybe use title screens of the games?

also leaving it off will cut the file size considerably while recording.
Who cares about capture filesize.... don't we all re-encode before YT submission anyhow - I know I do?
What does everyone use to re-encode for YT upload??

I use Mediacoder. It's free (enough - it has dumb captchas for hugeass queues) and easy enough to use.

x264 along with MeGUI is hard to beat when it comes to quality, speed and flexibility.

Sure, which games are you interested in the most? NES games will obviously look better on the Wii (no jailbars) and I don't have a modded N64, so that basically leaves SNES games.

Nothing beats x264, but for ease of use I use Handbrake, it's a 3 click solution. Open file, choose Youtube preset and click encode.

I just use Virtualdub with x264.

About Taito F2.... there is a pic of an F2 game here: http://garakuta.homelinux.org/~nosuke/d ... de=comment (at the bottom of the page)

The text mention XRGB3, is tht needed to get F2 games working? (babelfish translate did not make any sense).

Any SNES game that is on VC that you have I guess.

So I'm looking at this card for it's VGA capture functionality, I already have this card:

http://www.amazon.com/Avertv-Definition ... 497&sr=8-3

The only thing keeping me from selling this one and going to the Startech is the fact that this one does Composite/S-Video capture, which I would use for NES capture and perhaps some other sources that lack RGB or Component. Is there a decent USB device I could perhaps use to supplement this? I have an old Dazzle, but the capture quality isn't that great, and the audio input from it doesn't work in Windows 7

Get the Startech. If you really want to capture composite, just add ANY upscaler in between and capture in 31khz YUV or VGA.

drunk, the audio input does work in Windows 7 with Dazzle DVC 100. Maybe older units don't.

I've had no luck with mine, any program I use to select the DVC100 audio input, I get nothing. From what I've gathered, it may be due to some issue with the device and 64-bit Windows 7. If you're using the same, is there anything special you had to do toget audio working?

I have Windows 7 64 bit yeah. All I did was install latest driver from Pinnacle site and then plug in Dazzle. Amarec read it fine. I think maybe the software Pinnacle bundles causes the issue with lock down. Try uninstalling what they give you to install along with it and just use the driver: http://cdn.pinnaclesys.com/SupportFiles ... _64bit.exe

If that fails then maybe the virtualdub hack for Dazzle can work: http://rapidlibrary.com/files/virtualdu ... i89on.html

Made some screenshots of Chrono Trigger, Mario, Zelda and Metroid on Wii (Component) and SFC (RGB). There's also a 288p Super Metroid screenshot from Wii with RGB cable but it looks horrible. Chrono Trigger has a slightly different opening, so it's not frame perfect.

You need an upscaler to connect a SNES along with a SLG3000 to the capture card. But yes, if you do it this way, the scanlines will be captured as well.

What's wrong with the brightness? If it's too bright for you, you can simply adjust it.

Looking back they seem fine actually. It's just maybe I am used to the more duller Wii shots.

Let's not exagerate this. I wouldn't call the Wii shots bad by any means.

The Wii shots look pretty good, It looks like Nintendo used some kind of filtering when they scaled the video, which is fine. They can't be all things to all people.

I assume these are PAL? If I had RGB out for my SNES I'd try and do some NTSC ones, but I don't. I suppose I could do YPbPr shots of the Wii though, running the NTSC version of some of those games (Don't own all of them)
