SAM, I think that BrianC's av is actually one of the girls from Saber Marionette. Yeah, total ripoff. But it's not Lina.

It's an african mask called KpleKple (say ple fast twice) made by the Baule people from the Ivory Coast. It's the only african mask I've seen that has a creepy-cute look to it and the only that's used to scared the sh*t out of little kids. You see, hitting kids is not kosher for the Baule so when they've had enough of the little bastards, they'll wear the thing and visit them during bedtime.

It's the most awesome mask ever. It's so awesome I made it my avatar.

PS I wonder how the Baule deal with wet beds.

It's a platform game, but you spend about half of the time swimming underwater. It feels a bit like the Kirby games: It's very easy, but it never gets boring, due to the creativity of the levels and bosses. In fact, it's quite addictive. I played through the first Stafi game a while ago. Currently I'm enjoying part 2 and have part 3 on its way to me. I'm also looking very forward to Stafi 4 on the DS. They're actually in Langrisser V as well but the process to reaching their secret scenario is just as obscure. But that portrait is the Langrisser II in-game portrait.

KpleKple happens to be the son of Goli, the Baule's god of punishment. I'd be scared if the son of the devil came for me. Also, the KpleKple mask has horns, but I cut 'em off because they take too much space, and we have a 80 by 80 limit here.

This is a pretty darn fine piece. I've seen many of the crappy ones (like the one my prof had...)

A bunch of Compile games have him in there someplace...I remember seeing him in Space Megaforce and Zanac Neo as well. I don't know the exact subtle differences of how he's displayed from game to game though.

interestingly, the "bonus" characters in both Matt and my avatars also make appearances in other games.

in the comic JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, from part IV of the series, there's a Stand called "Pearl Jam"

I guess those masks were the inspiration.
