Re: Shmup Goals 2017

Post by Emuser »

Ok so this is super late since I don't normally browse the forums that often anymore and haven't been on any irc channels in a while now, been busy playing other games. There are very few shmup goals left for me to accomplish, I'm not completely done with them yet but the fire to play them hasn't been there lately like it used to be. I'll accept Kaiseroo's previously suggested Alpha Mission 2 1-ALL challenge, but I will easily raise that to a 2-ALL clear instead.

Personal Favourite Achievement of 2016: Aero Chimera Normal ALL+ clear: I originally considered this a load of bullshit and gave up in April 2014. January 2016 I don't know what the FUCK possessed me to go for this again, but I was making real progress on Normal with Tartarus aka the fast ship and was always just short of beating the TLB. After begging SAS for what the undiscovered midboss was and him spilling the deets, it was just perfect to let me beat this wonderful albeit tad bit overly hard game. In my mind it cemented me as a "bored God" sort of archetype of shmup player. If I really wanted a clear of something, once I have said "give me a week" I fucking mean it 100%. Blindly playing a shmup never really produces any results, so I got bored of streaming random games since I would get frustrated due to inexperience and the feeling of being embarrassed whenever I died playing a game. It was a distraction that was severe enough for me to lose focus for the rest of the time streaming. It stems from a superiority complex I've never been quite able to resolve. Anyhow though, I believe Normal ALL+ clear had been deemed largely unattainable for most people, so pulling this off late at night and recording my reaction in case I actually beat this son of a bitch was single handedly my favorite moment of 2016. I will bow to anyone else that can do this, and I will actually bounty up money to anyone that can do a Normal ALL+ clear without Tartarus because I still consider it impossible without Tartarus.

Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2016: Vortex Attack. That is all.

Favorite Achievements by Others of 2016: Perikles in general, Perikles trumping my Blazeon Arcade score, Kaiseroo's leap forward with Zenodyne R

Goals for 2017: Alpha Mission 2 2-ALL, pickup Dangun Feveron A-B-4 again, Clear Zenodyne R with G85.

CHALLENGES TO OTHER PLAYERS: Beat my BWR+ scores, ALL2 Dangun, play more shmups in general

Shmup goal 2017 is, to clear something. Anything, it's been about 2 years now.

Personal Favourite Achievements of 2016:
- Decent routing/progress on Battle Traverse and Blue Revolver. Started getting used to playing in arcade environment & without practice modes.

Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2016:
- Learning some games extremely slowly due to inefficient practice and stubborn grinding.

Favourite Achievements by Others of 2016:
Nice activity last year.
- Pazzys, Armchair Generals, Cees & Eaglets progress in their games. STG destroying progear & Megapulse on fairy wars.

Goals for 2017:
- Spend less time on games but learn faster and have more fun.
- Play StellaVanity if I find a way to run it at 60fps fullscreen.

I am actually embarrassed I posted no goals for 2016. I almost let this one slip away but darn it I am going to commit.

Personal Favourite Achievements of 2016:

This past year was a good year for me shmup-wise: I cleared 16 shooters, which is probably the most I ever cleared in a single year. Of course, some of those were pretty easy console shooters, but I am glad I was able to invest the time and learn how to survive in some games.

While a 'minor' title, I finally cleared my first Cave game, Deathsmiles, despite essentially scrubbing it out with the +2 life from Jitterbug and bomb-spamming Tyrannosatan into oblivion. Still tense! The game was so nice I cleared it twice! I'd like to get back to it one day and go for some of the trickier modes/difficulties, but as it stands I am glad I finally damn got a Cave clear.

Also important to me was my first Raizing clear of Soukyugurentai. While not "famous" as other shooters, this one took me years of on-and-off practice, as well as serious attempts for several weeks, learning how to survive some really awful rank later in the game, as well as some very cluttered screens. I think I won based more on luck than anything (I think I was down to my last life when it happened) - well, luck and bombs lol - but for a shmup I've played and enjoyed for so long, it was extremely satisfying to see its impenetrable front wither away.

As a minor accomplishment, I also cleared a route in DariusBurst ACEX, which was a surprisingly tough clear given the game's three-stages format. I hope I can clear an Hard route at some point, though I haven't gone back to the game in some time.

Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2016:

Not clearing more games. Actually, and this is embarassing, I have been guilty of this past year of purchasing too many shooters and not spending enough time on [m]any of them. Spending too much money on games in general has been my vice for 2016... How do I force my backlog to get smaller?*

Favourite Achievements by Others of 2016:

As usual it is with amazement that I watch Perikles demolish every pre-32bit shooter in existence. Even the bad ones. Especially the shitty ones.
Though one of the biggest "wows" for me this past year was watching Ako slam dunk his way through through several shooters like Kingdom Grandprix getting some ridiculous WRs through glitches, exploits, and mad skillz. You go man!

Goals for 2017:

I usually set too many lofty goals for myself (but that's what resolutions are for). However, I want to keep things simple yet challenging:

+Finally achieve the RayForce ALL
+Clear 1 Toaplan arcade shooter
+Clear 1 Psikyo shooter
+Clear 1 Cave shooter
+Clear 1 Treasure shooter
+Clear 1 Irem shooter
+Get that backlog down to manageable levels!!!

Several worthy candidates for each (maybe Perikles can tell me the easiest Toaplan and Irem shooters to clear  ), but I consider this an important part of becoming a much more knowledgeable shmup player.

None of my achievements in 2016 are shmup related, so I guess that counts as my biggest "screw-up".
Finally getting an Astro City is kind of an achievement though, I guess.

Goals for 2017

Blazing Star 1CC
Futari 1.5 Original 1CC (stretch goal: Maniac)
Esp Ra.de 1CC
Gokujou Parodius 1CC (sans special stage)
Finally putting some serious time into Varth (not expecting a 1CC, but it would be nice)

I don't get much time to play shmups, but I feel like these should be easily doable. My biggest challenge is keeping up TGM practice while also attempting to play demanding shooters on the side. Especially an issue with vertical games.
Also: Fixing (and maybe selling/trading) my Tatsujin Ou board.

I swapped my arcade stick for a bag of speed, so I'll have to get a new one.

After reading your posts in the strategy thread I knew the best way to play it would be to ignore scoring entirely

I want to 1CC:

Radiant Silvergun
Ikaruga
Raiden IV
at least one of the modes in DDP Resurrection.

...and get all achievements for DBCS.

I need to actually get some clears under my belt before I aim for scoring.

Personal Favourite Achievements of 2016:
  • Clearing the second loop of Cho Ren Sha 68k even though my first loop in the run was garbage
  • Getting the 1LC on Gunbird (Autofire: Off) while I was only attempting the 1CC
Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2016:
  • Putting significant time into Dangun Feveron and Crimzon Clover: World Ignition (Arcade Original), but giving up on practicing either near the end of the year
  • Deciding to clear Strikers 1945 II while better games went unplayed (Dangun, CC:WI)
Favourite Achievements by Others of 2016:
  • The rest of the thread has explained this pretty well. Pazzy's work on DOJ:WL and Ketsui really takes the cake for me though.
Goals for 2017:
I've already accomplished two of my main goals for the year with a Strikers 1945 II 1ALL, and a Gunbird 2 1ALL, so I feel like this year is off to a good start.
  • Clear Crimzon Clover: World Igntion (Arcade Original) or Dangun Feveron. Maybe try for both if I feel so bold.
  • Start playing Robotron: 2084 in Marathon settings, 1,000,000 points seems like a good start. Also play some VKE to understand how insane it can get. Time to move on from factory, and take a break from Tournament.
  • Clear a Raizing game
  • Stay away from Dragon Blaze, at least for a few months. I enjoy it, and if I put any more time into it i'll be dead set on the clear, but after months of Psikyo taking up all my shmup time I really need a break.
[OPTIONAL] CHALLENGES TO OTHER PLAYERS:
Try out some pre-1942 shmups! Anything from 1978-1984 will do. I find going back to such an early era of shumps to be humbling and very intriguing from a historical aspect. While many shmups from this era have been surpassed or built upon in later years, there's still some gems that feel timeless. Robotron: 2084 blew away my expectations, being very fast paced, frantic, and vicious in an era that I had previously associated with shmups being sluggish and basic.
