Keep in mind this isn't my taste. She just asked me to find her more films like the ones I listed on the last page.

She thinks The Thing isn't exciting/scary enough, but Sharknado (this is a thing), Anaconda and Deep Rising are terrifying.

She's 24 and anything pre-2000 is apparently an 'old' movie. So while most of your suggestions are awesome shit I'd like to watch - cult stuff and super low budget for-laughs classics - I know in a weird way they're too good for her.

Critters possibly, possibly. From Beyond I imagine will be too slow and weird. Leprechaun might actually be closer to the mark.

Cabin in the Woods will go right over her head. All these movies are being watched with subtitles and I think there's a cultural boundary there too. One reason why simple monster crap like Deep Rising seems to curry favour.

I'm strongly thinking Creepshow might work though. Old yes, but bite-sized, monsters, zombies, gore, cheap shocks. I think I'll definitely do The Blob in Creepshow 2 because large expanses of water.

It's not scary horror so much as it's "scary" aliens, but for an absolute camp-fest, would "They Live" be okay? It *certainly* fits the "funny" bit.

I know, I know...it's quite the stretch, but I'm just not into horror flicks.

Phantasm 2 - Really? I have only seen the first Phantasm, and I wouldn't recommend it for her. What does this one do differently?
Phantasm 2 is to Phantasm what Evil Dead 2 is to Evil Dead.

It features the ice cream man from the original having a chainsaw duel, among other things.

Dagon fits the bill here so, so, so well. Almost too well. It's pretty fun.

Also, Creepshow 2 has a short called 'The Raft' which I thought was very effective and ticks a lot of boxes.

Yeah I've mentioned this one twice but I kept calling it The Blob by mistake - my bad.

Amazingly I found PPTV (free online movie streaming) somewhat incredibly has nearly all the stuff already - Creep show 1&2, all the Evil Deads, Drag Me to Hell, Cabin Fever, Piranha, even Leviathan! That means no downloading and searching for subtitles. :D

Thanks for all your suggestions, I'll see how these suit her and report back with a thumbs up/down.

A bit "old" (what a criterion!) but I've recently watched the "old" flicks Fright Night ('85) and Fred Dekker's The Monster Squad ('87), both of which have some humorous scenes. Something probably closer to what you're looking for is The Howling, though, from about the same time period. "Thank God!" The film wraps things up pretty well, compared with the original (?) novels which appear to have limped on for at least two sequels. Also, here's an early appearance from Robert Picardo, in a very different role from the wholesome EMH character he portrayed on Star Trek: Voyager.

More recent: Van Helsing is okay (though I don't think it will deliver on the humor bit - the opening chat at Notre Dame aims to be slightly comedic, but that's probably about it) and the wooden/awesome acting in Dracula from '92 is interesting...might qualify as funny! Neither of these is very scary and VH is definitely in the action flick camp, not horror. Maybe...From Dusk 'Till Dawn?

Jesus. Well, spring the '50s original on her then. And, I guess to commiserate, but I think the original Wolfman (Lon Chaney, '41) holds up very well to the modern remake (which has its moments but is mostly just disgusting, rather than cooly moody like the original). Then the closet psychodrama (and, like The Wolfman, explicitly part lecture about science, feeling a bit ahead of its time and even today) Isle of the Dead, dir. Val Lewton, starring the inimitable Claude Rains. And...well, I could go on. "Boring" just doesn't adequately describe any of this stuff! If anything I think some of these older horror flicks have pacing and acting that holds up better than some of the "classics" of roughly the same era.

Then this.
THIS.
THIS.

Actually I'm interested to watch King of the Zombies now. Getting back to the future, I also need to start with Evil Dead 0 - "Within the Woods" - too bad it only seems to be available as capture of an old distorted VHS tape, rather than on commercial disc.

My wife likes Return of the living dead. I told her it was a horror.. whilst she enjoyed it a lot she said it was more like a comedy.

Even though it was made in 1984 it still holds up today. Some of the puppetry in it is mind boggling good for the era. Especially one scene where a half skeleton zombie strapped down under interrogation states "We don't eat people, we eat BRAINS".

Its a cult classic and deserved of all the praise it gets.. If you like that sort of thing.

ROTLD is dynamite horror/comedy but yeah, it's distinctly more funny than scary (although its intelligent, ruthless and near-indestructible zombies are pants-shitting in concept). I still crack up every time at the bit where zombies erupt from their graves to "PARTEH TIME."

"WHAT IS THAT?!"
"IT'S DEAD PEOPLE SCREAMIN'!"

This is actually a pretty hard topic to recommend for, heh. Then again "scary" alone is about as subjective as it gets.

[REC] (2007) is found footage and has a quiet start, two instant caveats, but it doesn't take itself too seriously and has some real terror (and even a bit of horror). Some cracking shots of screaming zombies running at hastily slammed doors. Short runtime with a tight videogamey premise+setting too (rather The Raid-like). Ohshit, locked in an apartment block with zombies! Where the keys?!

Oh, no...if nothing else (and there were other things), when SLJ does finally go off about being sick and tired of the MFing snakes on the MFing plane, it's pretty funny. They also went to *great* lengths to be pretty funny throughout. Not everything stuck to the wall, obviously, but you had to respect the effort to make sure that they never took themselves too seriously.

Some feedback:

The Raft & The Hitchhiker (Creepshow 2): Good but 'too real and therefore too scary' and 'not funny enough'.
Creepshow episodes 1 - 3: 'Too real, too scary, also a little boring, too old.'
Piranha 3D: Loved it, just what the doctor ordered.

So now I'm thinking Snakes on a Plane is probably perfect material, even though I wouldn't watch it twice.

Still got Leviathan in the bag and after all the talk I really want to watch Return of the Living Dead because it sounds like a blast. I just don't want to sit there listening to 'it's too old/a little slow/boring'.

Kids. :x

If you weren't aware, Piranha 3D got a sequel, Piranha 3DD (double-d). It's rather terrible, but worth watching just because David Hasselhoff guests stars as himself.

I really need to reiterate that folks read the content and criteria I posted than just recommend based on the thread title alone.

As much as I appreciate the suggestions, this girl really only enjoys non-old, American made, crap but funny movies with things in the sea that eat people. Outside of that we're reaching.

Oh, just thought - Quarantine and its sequel might work. The former is an inferior but inoffensive US remake of [REC], the latter is a made for tv-ish yet entirely watchable original sequel with lots of rabies action on a plane/in an airport. Animal attacks figure very heavily in both!

This sounds fun, even without the required sea life. Does one of these have Stallone in it or am I thinking of something else?

I sadly can't think of too many sea horrors outside of what's been mentioned, but... you can't really go wrong with Troll Hunter. Although after reading some of your descriptions, there could be some bits that fall into the "too boring" category. Also, it's not an American flick.

You could try House of the Devil and Hatchet.

I know you said TROMA is "too shitty," but I feel compelled to come to their defense. Go with Father's Day. That one is newer (2011), so it may be a bit more accessible. It's plenty fucked-off, too. And I have to mention my favorite (after Toxic Avenger, of course): Terror Firmer.

EDIT: Just want to give an extra vote for Return of the Living Dead.

D'oh! I can't believe I forgot some of the Roger Corman-produced silliness: Up From The Depths, Demon Of Paradise, and Humanoids from the Deep. And if you're willing to go way back with Corman, Creature From The Haunted Sea. Good luck with that one.

Those should be more of what you're asking for, and hopefully, not "too old" (well, I know Creature will be, but it's still fun).
