Robo Aleste and Lords of Thunder - screw the haters, I love that version - are both great (and thus much better than Sol Feace).

Disclaimer: I own both Ikaruga and Skigami No Shiro II on DC and GC, but my playtime favors Shiki II on DC and Ikaruga on GC. Theoretically, one or the other should be my favorite on both platforms, but it just doesn't work out that way. I also prefer Psyvariar 2 to Ikaruga on DC.

Really interesting that there are a few Spectrum submissions, I actually remember both R-Type and Cronos as being pretty awesome, hard to decide on a winner.
Then there's also games like Zynaps and Xecutor and that admittedly weird and repetitive Darius port, and maybe more that are lost in obscurity, Spectrum shmups thread when?

Hey, I told you it was weird and repetitive, IIRC you can chain invincibility shield powerups almost continously too, though that goes away during bosses.

Oh yeah bro I remember that game! It's this crazy gamecube game where you control a spaceship like Galaga or some shit. Except there like mad bullets all over the screen, like crazy Japanese Galaga or something. And you can like change colors and it's got this rad soundtrack. This one dorky guy I knew in college had it. I heard some crazy Japanese dudes without girlfriends can actually beat that shit without even shooting bro! Only bad thing about it is you beat it in like 15 minutes since you can just continue when you die. Not really worth the money man, but it was fun and shit.

NES : Dropzone
SNES : Super Aleste

Dreamcast : Gunbird 2
Gamecube : Castle Shikigami II
PS2 : R-Type Final
Wii : Geometry Wars Galaxies

PS3: Raiden 4 Overkill?
Saturn: dodonpachi
DC: ikaruga
GC: ikaruga

But the ultimate question is, what is the best shmup on the arcade platform?

None of those are exclusives, though. You're ignoring Scorpius, Nemesis '90 Kai, and others.
