What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
Musha
I don't think I've played a bad Compile game honestly, they're all pretty good

I miss that company.
1-M.U.S.H.A.
2-Robo Aleste (did a 180 on that one - I now love it)
3-Zanac Neo
4-Blazing Lazers
5-Space Megaforce
I own all five, though Blazing Lazers is a Wii Virtual Console download.
P.S. Never had the chance to play Spriggan.

edit: Musha Aleste/M.U.S.H.A. hands down.
Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
Indeed, M.U.S.H.A. is in a class of its own!
I have officially run out of room: I currently have 14 consoles (11 different ones + 3 JP duplicates) hooked up, ready for play, on two different CRTs. It makes it easier to justify passing on the PCE, but yeah, Spriggan (and Nexzr) keep tempting me.Stop holding out - you *need* to get a PC Engine

Either M.U.S.H.A. or Spriggan. Both games are pretty awesome.
Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
I'm right about there myself - 12 home consoles, supergun, CMVS and a couple of portable systems. Selecty21 is my friendnosorrow wrote:Indeed, M.U.S.H.A. is in a class of its own!

1. MUSHA
2. Seirei Senshi Spriggan
3. Zanac Neo
4. Gun Nac
For Spriggan, you don't have to have a PC Engine. You can soft mod your Wii, and play the Japanese Virtual Console release of it. Shame we never got it over here.

By soft modding the Wii you can gain acces to the Japanese Virtual Console and download it from there?

Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
Bumping this because it's (probably) the most recent Compile-themed thread; apparently HG101 got access to a handful of old Compile shump design documents, and made a video offering a quick look at them.
Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
M.U.S.H.A.
Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
I didn't really get into zanac neo - do I need to just play it more? Just seemed a bit abstract, like a poor star soldier remake, or am I way off base here?
Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
Gun Nac is my tawdry mistress. Then MUSHA mostly just to keep busy while loving that soundtrack.
Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
Zanac (MSX)
Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
Yet to play Zanac (will amend that shortly!
), but as of now: Dennin Aleste by far. You actually have to move around, dodge and play carefully in order to clear this one, what a concept.
Excellent presentation as always, helps over the somewhat dragging third stage that it supports the heavy, inexorable feel of the train as though it were a living organism. Some truly excellent boss fights, the penultimate boss is one of the most dastardly foes I've encountered in a 16-bit shooter. Every weapon has defined uses and limitations thanks to the stage layout and enemy design. Dennin Aleste feels like a real game, a lot of the other 16-bit Compile games are moreso technical demonstrations. I tend to like them (Sylphia's mythological theme completely won me over, for example), but it'd be great if there were at least the illusion of challenge (see Battle Mania Daiginjou as a prime example for that; ludicrously easy game, yet it keeps you busy all the time).

Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
That's awesome. I can't tell offhand if it's the same stuff that's in the rare Complete Compile book, which I now have scans of and will be uploading in a Compile interview/feature soon.BulletMagnet wrote:Bumping this because it's (probably) the most recent Compile-themed thread; apparently HG101 got access to a handful of old Compile shump design documents, and made a video offering a quick look at them.
I adore Compile, hard to pick a favorite. Zanac Neo is one of the best 2P shmups, but I really love the MSX Aleste and Aleste 2. MUSHA was one of my early "getting into shmups" games too, I should revisit it and see how it holds up. I should try Gun Nac on hard settings too.

Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
I'd have to say the classic TurboGrafx-16 shmup by the name of Blazing Lazers. Had the rare opportunity to try it out on a TG-16 jamma conversion kit running on a Dynamo upright cab at the Game Station Arcade in Modesto, CA back in March of 1990. Had to credit it up with a quarter just to play it (which allowed me a few minutes of playtime -- then suddenly encountering the dreaded freezed-up screen situation and emitting a loud chirping sound at the same time {which meant that you were encouraged to feed the super-hungry coin slot another shiny quarter just to continue on with your current BL shmup session}, otherwise, it'd go back to it's usual demo run sequence/cycle). Strange but true, that TG-16 jamma pcb oddball -- have never seen another one nor played it since then. (Heck, I still haven't seen/played one set up on "Free Play" at the once-a-year California Extreme shows -- goes to show how rare it was out in the wilds of the American arcades during that particular point in time.) You couldn't miss the super bright neon colored backlit TG-16 logo marquee even if you really wanted to -- it really stood out/was quite eye-catchy. The TG-16 jamma conversion kit even sported a slick custom manufactured TG-16 logo endowed control panel -- quite something to behold/play on.
(Later on, it was revealed that if you had a such a rare oddity such as the TG-16 jamma pcb in your PCB stash/collection, that it could play both JPN region PC Engine Hu-Cards and USA region TG-16 TurboChip games without the need for a Hu-Card convertor whatsoever...how cool is that?) Parent company NEC never did release it for the Japanese game centers either back in the 1990-1991 timeline (although they could've done so quite easily, but ultimately, chose not to).
Hidden Stage Select in Gun Nac:
By highlighting #7 of the BGM on Gun Nac in the menu screen, go to stage section & you can select your favorite stage to start on. Easy as pie.
PC Engine Fan X! ^_~

Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
From the design documents that BulletMagnet has linked to we can see that MUSHA was also known as MD Aleste 2.
I'm not familiar with MSX Aleste 2.
Can anyone shed some light on how Aleste 2 and MUSHA compare or contrast?

Much sillier bump this time - apparently Kanye West, of all people, is a Blazing Lazers fan.
Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
I know it's cool to hate on this guy but I think his first 3 albums are fucking awesome, everything after that is at least "ok" and I think it's cool as hell that one of the most well known people on the planet and an artist whose work I personally enjoy just tweeted about what's probably my favorite game by my favorite developer (I also grew up playing BL on a TG16).BulletMagnet wrote:Much sillier bump this time - apparently Kanye West, of all people, is a Blazing Lazers fan.
Sorry for the interruption, please begin the requisite 3 minute 'ye hate that must occur every time the dude is brought up on the internet

Get him into this forum.
Let's see what he's really made of.

Maybe he's already here, he tweeted about naming his next album "Turbo Grafx 16" about a day after someone created a thread about it. Coincidence? I think not!Kollision wrote:Get him into this forum.

Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
Pretty much agree except I like his 4th and 5th albums just slightly more than the first 3, they're more my style. No hate here, as rare as that is on the internet these days. And it is quite cool he's talking about shmups publicly. He's making his own video game right now too, so he's got love for the medium unlike most other modern celebrities.d0s wrote:I know it's cool to hate on this guy but I think his first 3 albums are fucking awesome, everything after that is at least "ok" and I think it's cool as hell that one of the most well known people on the planet and an artist whose work I personally enjoy just tweeted about what's probably my favorite game by my favorite developer (I also grew up playing BL on a TG16).BulletMagnet wrote:Much sillier bump this time - apparently Kanye West, of all people, is a Blazing Lazers fan.
