There's actually an interesting argument that the goods "procured" by copyright laws aren't scarce; the system in place (copyright award) creates any scarcity artificially and unnaturally - so there are even some Austrian-school (conservative) economists who have decided to pile on in favor of abolishing copyright laws altogether (of course that whole "system tellin' me I can't do things, can't abide" angle is always popular with them).

A more restrained argument is that copyright terms are too long because returns in the future oftentimes do not merit investing time today. (This argument is highly conditional on the amount of resources and time to invest, how much time in the future we are looking for returns, and a little bit on whether people really do have other options for investing their time - although in terms of the US Constitution's wording, it is clear that the return for society in continuing to reward inventors and authors for yesterday's business is of limited use to society.)

There is also plenty of evidence that current copyright and patent terms are far too long, and that these can harm systems badly (for example, James Watt spent his first two decades after being awarded the patent for a steam engine litigating, and meanwhile couldn't make use of designs that others had patented; the whole episode set back the English industrial revolution by twenty years).

Can't you just hack the game and get the hat again? I haven't played the game in forever but I remember there being a huge amount of cheaters in that game before. It definitely had tons of wall hacking going on for instance.
