Regarding autofire/rapidfire, every arcade in Japan gives the player the choice of an autofire button and a lot of arcade games that originally did not have an autofire feature were later included in a console port.
So I don't really see the point in forcing carpel tunnel syndrome on everybody that participates. Besides that, tapping a button constantly is the opposite of fun and will greatly diminish the enjoyment of a lot of people in the tournament as well as it might make potential new participates reconsider.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

How many times have we been over this already in threads? Honestly, I can't see how forced button mashing to use what is essentially a machinegun in most games is supposed to make sense, planes do not require mashing of the trigger to fire their guns at a constant rate. It's a horrible game mechanic, especially when ideal gameplay in an older game usually involves tapping the shot button at a fast pace over the course of an entire game... for 30 minutes? No thanks.

If you're worried about breaking some older games that allow for some serious damage at pointblank when using autofire, you can limit the autofire to a reasonable rate (you can set the exact hz value in shmupmame) but disallowing it entirely when many console ports of arcade shmups sensibly added autofire is silly.

I wouldn't participate without autofire. The only games I've enjoyed that lack it are Giga Wing, which actually requires an unusually slow tap speed to max out its fire rate by comparison to other arcade shmups (and its DC port has autofire anyways), and Mars Matrix, which really feels well designed around the one button concept (and using the close range energy attack doesn't take much tapping effort). I'd seriously hate to play an older shmup where one tap = one shot fired like Gradius without the option of autofire. Even playing Gunbird 2 on a cab last weekend was annoying for me. Sure, you get autofire when holding down the shot button, but only when your charge shot meter is empty, and I'd like to shoot without worrying about expending charge shots (yay melee attacks) or tapping constantly.

probably would be better to consider myself shmups instead of marp... i'm in.

please stop trying to "justify" autofire, it's making you look a lot crazier/dumber than the people against it. i do want autofire... because i'm a wuss, because that's what it really comes down to. the only reason for it is to automate some efficiency, which is why it wasn't there for the longest time; the lack of adds the layer of "focusing on efficient fire". it's similar to having loops, the inability to pause (never mind the purpose of that in an arcade setting), so on and so forth; "endurance", "patience", skills like any other skills.

no, playing exed exes or whatever without autofire is not going to give you cts, don't be ridiculous. what it is going to do is make the game twice as technically challenging.

which, by the way, means iast is way tougher than me and dale is ye gods

There's nothing wrong with having to press the button each time you want to shoot. I personally find autofire annoying, though it shouldn't be banned for being game breaking (for shooting games at least, it does break fighters and beat'em ups).

Having autofire disallowed is making me very seriously reconsider signing up. It'll all come down to the games selected, but I don't really like the odds. Allow autofire and I'll sign up for sure, I've already been approached by a teammate and had decided to enter.

As was stated previously, limiting autofire rate works fine in most cases where autofire gives you excessive power. I honestly wouldn't even have a problem with autofire being disallowed entirely on a specific game if there were a known issue with it being horribly overpowered, but it's something that should be an exception rather than the rule itself.

I just tried out a game in MAME without autofire and it was pretty lame. I generally just play my games on my cabs, and there I quite like tapping fire all the time. I can get a great fire rate with two fingers. There's something about a keyboard that makes it hard though.

I never realized how many pansies there were on this board! I'm kidding.

I was always under the assumption most of the people on here despised auto-fire. I got into STG when i was around 8 and mashing buttons in the arcade always made sense. There was this giddy feeling i would get mashing buttons. The faster i shot the faster they died.

Logically, yes it makes sense not to do it and sometimes i wish some games (the slower ones) had it.

We'll need a default auto-fire setting for each game then but then again this is all in good faith.

Using (unlimited) autofire is the standard of the genre and has been for as long as I'm aware of. Score records generally display no-autofire as a special category and not the other way around.

personally, not interested. By mame games, you just mean arcade games right? They weren't born for mame. If you call up something I have on PCB, I assume I can use that.
