Shoot Em Up Tournament ||

Wolfman and I (GimmeClassics) are going to be holding a high score tournament for Shoot Em Up fans !

When does this contest start and how can I join ?
The contest will start at January 6th 2014 11:59 gmt time

This competition is going to be a team contest. You can either sign up by yourself and get paired up or sign up with a team mate.
Just leave a reply or send a PM to one of us when you want to join our competition !!
We have a list of all players at the end of this post.

Tournament setup and games
It's going to be a double elimination tournament after 3 rounds of seeding. During the seeding rounds all contestants will play the same game
(1 round = 1 week).

# submitting your hi-score: this contest is going to be a multi-website contest. There will be a thread of our contest at each of those websites.
We wanted to create a contest which is very easy to join. Therefore each player can submit his of her score on the website of their choice: gameex.info, retrouprising.com, shmups.system11.org, atariage.com and retrogamer.net

Just post a screenshot of your score at the forum of your choice or play your game at RetroUprising.

GameEx is the place where the tournament standings and additional info will be made public !!

# point scoring system: your score and your team mate score gets added together. The amount of contestants will determine how many points you will get. Example: if you and your team mate have the 3rd and 4th best score at round 1 with a total number of 40 contestants you'll get 38 + 37 = 75 points.

Comparing all the team scores after 3 rounds of seeding will rank each team for the double elimination tournament. Only the top 24 ranked teams will qualify for the double elimination tournament !!

Double Elimination tournament > each team begins in the winner’s bracket, but with one loss, goes into a loser’s bracket, where they will have to play their way back. All competitors will have the oppurtunity to play at least twice during the elimination phase.

Week 1 (seeding round 1) = Salamander (version D) > romset = salamand
Week 2 (seeding round 2) = Gradius (Japan) > romset = gradius
Week 3 (seeding round 3) = Flying Shark (World) > romset = fshark

Week 4, 5, 6 etc.: the double elimination tournament will start in week 4. The 8 highest seeded teams will receive a bye for week 4.
After the seeding rounds we will publish the game each team has to play each round. This depends on your rank after the seeding rounds and whether or not staying in the winners bracket or having to fight (...eh play) your way back in the loser's bracket.

The double elimination round games will be - in no particular order:
Armed Police Batrider (Japan, B version) > romset = batriderj
Gunlock (Ver 2.30) > romset = gunlock
Mahou Daisakussen (Japan) > romset = mahoudai
19XX The War Against Destiny (Japan 951225) > romset = 19xxj
Darius (Japan) > romset = dariusj
Sexy Parodius (ver JAA) > romset = sexyparo
1945k III > romset = 1945kiii
Dodonpachi (Japan) > romset = ddonpachj
Super Cobra > romset = scobra [= possible extra game 1]
R-Type II (Japan) > romset = rtype2j [= possible extra game 2]

Again: we will publish the game each team has to play during the double elimination phase.

Interesting format for an STG tournament. That's something you usually see on versus games, but it's the first time I see it applied to this genre. I'd like to participate, but that really depends on the game selection. Will you be going for mid '90s-'00s stuff from Cave, Raizing, Seibu, Psikyo etc., or older stuff from the '80s?

You can play Mame games at RetroUprising. You just install a little program which is available at their website called ArcadeOX. Here's a how-to link

It will be a MAME only contest. I you have MAME installed it's pretty easy to find MAME-games. Google is your friend

There doesn't seem to be much in the way of rules with respect to the playing itself. Is autofire allowed? Is turning on C button rapid on games that allow it (like Dodonpachi) acceptable? What versions of MAME are being used/accepted? I'm asking because it's a cross-site tourney, and MARP is known for being anal about not autofire ever to the point of disqualifying runs for enabling C button autofire in games that support it natively (despite the fact that any PCB owner or reputable arcade in Japan would have it enabled).

All newborns just poop, sleep and drink milk. You'll have lots of time to play

no autofire and rapid fire but if the game allows it like you mention dodonpachi then rapid fire is allowed. you can use any version of mame to play the game. games are either going to be announced at the start of the rounds or a day before the start of the round so people can get the games working. I know i have trouble sometimes with roms

You're right after the first couple days it eases up a lot. I remember chainsawing firewood during the leave for my first. But now my first is 2... But yeah I may have time. I guess put me down then, hopefully it works out. No autofire is best for me. Bring on Raiden! Minimum system requirements for games though? I don't think I can handle anything 3D.
