I thought that score attack locks you to default game settings? Is the version select an exception? Also why is there a difficulty option 1 and difficulty option 2?

No no, there is a game mode called score attack which you can play in score attack mode and you should play the arrange version of it under 1.0 and not 1.01
*explodes*
Yeah, the games pretty fucked up in that respect and pretty confusing for your first time playing it. But in the options you'll find game modes... one of those will be S.Attack and that is a nice mode to play to kinda get you started. Play arrange mode and you'll have a great time. Just be sure to learn about the infinite hadou's trick

Ok, so I understand there's an ingame score attack mode, but it looks like you have to set the game options to access alternate modes, and I was under the impression whatever you change in the game options doesn't matter in score attack mode (the mode where your score is uploaded to a leaderboard) since it locks you to default settings. So does that mean that if you change the "course" and version options, they DO affect score attack (upload) mode? Also, why are there two different difficulty settings?
(And please clarify on the save and load options; I never saw them in any other CAVE ports, and its truly confusing

The save/load stuff is just saving your default config I think - so lets say you set your course differently, you change extends.. you can save those options and then load them again without.
I dunno if changing difficulty settings makes a difference, someone else can probably confirm that as I only ever play shmups on normal difficulty for the most part with a few exceptions. I think it might force default settings for "score attack" - but for the sake of avoiding confusion, let's call that Ranked from now on - since you place on leaderboards.. right?
There is a game type CALLED score attack which is a time attack style game which is full of absolute win. When you discover it, you will shit yourself with glee. Noticed all the different modes on the leaderboards? It's one of those
And you can play this score attack ranked on the boards... hence.. score attacks in your score attacks. If you play around with the triggers and pay attention to the text in the top right, you'll see. Also note that some of the scores say V1.00 and others V1.01 and are all combined on to a single board.
Anyway, essentially you can choose to play a different game version or change to the time attack mode and then play that on ranked - it will use those settings. It might force extends/difficulty to defaults, but it will at least respect things like the game type. Again, someone smarter can probably advise on what settings it actually enforces.

I just tried changing some options, and it actually auto saved;
still, what you said still makes the most sense for the save/load options. I switched the versions for both games to 1.00 for that ARCADE FEEL.
As for the games, I'm not really sure how I feel about them; it didn't make me want put the game in a syringe and shoot it right into my veins like Futari and Garegga did, but...
It's definitely growing on me, that's for sure.
Unrelated, but I faintly remember reading a Retro Gamer interview about Chronoblast; was that you?

Pink Sweets arrage mode is garbage (like every CAVE arrange mode ever). It's for pansies who have been hopelessly emasculated by the regular game.

Fixed that for youebarrett wrote:Pink Sweets arrange mode is thuper fun (unlike every CAVE arrange mode ever). It's for awesome people who are taking a break from going full shmup on the regular game.

C'mon though, it's just a mode for fun.. At least you can use the bloody Rose Cracker in score attack and not get brutally punished for it!

If you're not a crazy pro, Pink Sweets arrange is a thousand times more fun than the normal version. I honestly can't imagine the arcade version being fun even if I were good at it, but whatever, it's a moot point.
And the people trying to sell the normal edition (or even the LE) for $200 on eBay are idiots, I got a non-Best Hits version for around $40 at a store in Tokyo around when the reprint came out. I'd only seen it once prior to then, and it was about $60.

I kind of like Muchi Muchi Pork because of its scoring system (if it wasn't for the scoring system the game would be quite bland), but I'm not sure what to think of Pink Sweets. I love Battle Garegga, so logically I should like this one, but I just feel like the game is missing something presentation and gameplay wise. I'm not saying I don't like it, but...

MMP is Cave's least visually interesting game, that's for sure. I don't know that bland is quite the word, though.

I guess BBWs on exercise bikes flying over the Japanese countryside shooting at pigs in soldier uniforms is my kind of bland.

I think the soundtrack might be a major factor in this; in every shmup I've played up to this point, the level 1 BGM has always been insanely memorable to me; every time I hear or even think of the BGM I suddenly want to go out and play that game immediately. However the MMP and Pink sweet BGMs aren't too interesting to me for whatever reason.

I know it's personal opinion and all that but now I'm doing the Jeff Bridges look too because those 2 games have amazing soundtracks. I guess I can see how the stage 1 tracks are kind of boring but the rest is really good.
Random fact: When I listen to MMP soundtrack in VLC it pulls up this image

Yeah, the more I play these games the more I'm starting to like them; I'm starting to get into the soundtracks a bit, but the thing is the games aren't grabbing my interest right away like the other Cave games did.
In general I like MMP a lot more than Pink sweets, which is funny since I went in thinking it would be the other way around.

MMP is so addictive once you understand how to medal. Can't believe I've slept on this one for so long. I've got to pick up the stick more often.

Try playing Muchi arranged mode. I have more fun with that. Pink Sweets arranged mode has a KILLER soundtrack!! You need to try that version.cave hermit wrote:I think the soundtrack might be a major factor in this; in every shmup I've played up to this point, the level 1 BGM has always been insanely memorable to me; every time I hear or even think of the BGM I suddenly want to go out and play that game immediately. Two awesome games available for a ridiculously low price right now. Anyone on the fence, don't think: Just buy them. (You can get the two pack for around $40)

Is this true? I still have my DLC and LE contents, but had to sell the game out of it a while ago. I was looking to pick up the standard release to complete my LE, so hopefully I don't end up paying more than I did for the brand new LE!cave hermit wrote: Apparently the normal version is extremely rare and expensive

Good thing I sold my extra copy before they reissued MMP/PS for the 360
