1941 for me. The SuperGrafx version tunes kick some ass too. I think the pcb is rare as a lot of them were converted into Street Fighter 2 machines.
I used to own 1944, it started out fun, but way way too long with little variety. Really boring, do not want again.

19XX is incredible. That game stood out to me before I even knew the term "shmup."
CAPGOD spritework, a soundtrack that has no buisness being that good, solid gameplay, it's all there.
Don't let the first few stages fool you, the game gets super duper mega difficult, so I have no chance of ever clearing it. The final boss is insane.

19XX has the worst scoring system of any shmup ever. No-miss/no-bomb/medal chaining/100% destruction/boss speedkilling ALL AT ONCE!!
Even though 1943 Kai is superior to 1943, I still prefer the original somehow (shotgun anyone?).
I prefer 1943 to Kai. I think the music is better. To be honest it’s mostly nostalgia from the NES version. But I do appreciate Kai’s reduced stage count. Last year I made a romhack for 1943 NES to reduce it to 5 stages. So far it is too difficult for me, but also more fun. If anyone is interested to help balance it then I’m more than happy to update it. The big questions are which stages to include in a shorter arrange mode.

Wow incredible thread resurrection. Cheers!

I think 19XX is the right answer, but I also really like the Supergrafx version of 1941. The arcade version is a little too hard for my tastes.

I've been playing a bit of 1941 lately. I think the game kinda peaks in stage two with the rocket. Also, I'm not a huge fan of how you bump
into walls and spin about. Kind of weird.
Fun game, though.

I had never seen a 1941 in the wild, when I got my SuperGrafx it was one of the first titles I played. I gotta say, the bouncing off the walls as a required mechanic is really genius. Definitely my fave of the series.
Re: Best game in the 19_ _ series
without actually knowing, I feel like that's where some of those NMK titles that have bounce or hugging for score drew their inspiration from... like p47 aces, hacha mecha fighter, zed blade, etc but I could be totally wrong about that

I actually figure it out today. The reason why 1944 The Loop Master is not as expected is because it rather plays like a Toaplanesque than a true Capcom sequels. Tatsuya Uemura the Flying Shark designer involved in creating this game
