Re: Gran Turismo 6 (PS3, Holiday Season 2013)
I only played a demo for the first one. Seemed fine enough. Yeah, it's "arcadey" but that might be closer to what Skykid is looking for. What's that supposed to mean, anyway? Forgiving physics and handling? Probably the only previous rally experience I had was some ancient rally racer demos for PSX dating from 1997 or so, older than even GT2.

Granted that Namco did release RR7 for the PS3 and later on, added 3D glasses support with a JPN PSN d/l. I wouldn't be surprised if Namco brings out RR8 out on the PS4 this coming winter of 2013 as a launch title (they've released a new RR title with every new gaming console release starting with the PSX onward).neorichieb1971 wrote:Well to put things in perspective. I played GT5 for 3 hours, it has a gazzillion tracks and a gazzillion cars, an intro, credits longer than a movie and 50GB of blu ray disc of storage.
Just goes to show that gameplay rules and doesn't need to be expensive. GT is the Avatar of the racing game world.
When GT1 came out, I thought it was the most amazing thing ever. But 5 generations of the game later, I just found it covers old ground a lot. Same cars, same tracks, same music.
Namco need to bring back the old RR games with PS3 graphics. I'd love that shit.
Ridge Racer - PSX launch title circa 1994 (with the follow ups of Ridge Racer Revolution, Rage Racer & Ridge Racer Type 4)
Ridge Racer V - PS2 launch title circa 2000
Ridge Racer 6 - Xbox 360 launch title circa 2005
Ridge Racer 7 - PS3 launch title circa 2006
As for the Namco arcade drifting series, Wangun Midnight: Maximum Tune series, it still hasn't gotten the proper home gaming console treatment yet.

Why not for the PS4 but that will probably take another 5 years .
I quite liked the racing in GT5 but why use that tedious license system they keep returning with, it's a bore fest .
I personally had more fun with Forza .

That's just it, GT5 is a great simulation, (I race my car at trackdays on weekends, so I can attest that it's pretty good, not perfect, but fairly realistic) but it just wasn't that much fun.Casey120 wrote:Why not for the PS4 but that will probably take another 5 years .

I hate how it became a level grinding JRPG after the first few events, just racing the same races over and over with the same brain dead AI just to be able to level up to the next event, which you would then grind away at....
Forza doesn't have quite the physics model, but it's a far better game.
Re: Gran Turismo 6 (PS3, Holiday Season 2013)
I hadn't played a GT game until I after I played Forza 2 and 3. It felt decidedly last gen by comparison, as with quite a lot of the PS3 exclusives.

Basically, yes. Simplified driving model, the presence of racing assists of all kinds, the ability to enter sharp corners at high speed etc.Ed Oscuro wrote:Yeah, it's "arcadey" but that might be closer to what Skykid is looking for. Re: Gran Turismo 6 (PS3, Holiday Season 2013)
In addition to being fucking pointless. I presume the point was to teach the basic stopping distances, entry and exits from corners etc, except it put you in a different car for every test, making whatever you'd just learned totally redundant. Worst design ever. No excuse for forcing people to play them.Casey120 wrote:Why not for the PS4 but that will probably take another 5 years .

I hate the license tests. I like Forza Horizon because it not only lets you drive like a maniac, it also encourages it. I think the open world driving was the most interesting thing to happen to racing sims in a long time. I thought the AI was interesting too. It was challenging and would screw up sometimes.Casey120 wrote:Why not for the PS4 but that will probably take another 5 years .

Re: Gran Turismo 6 (PS3, Holiday Season 2013)
I like the idea of license tests. What I don't like is the ridiculously unforgiving gold times they impose on you. Even after you get the hang of it, you're forced to do it over and over again to nail that gold. At this point it's not fun anymore and it becomes infuriating. Sometimes you need to cheat and use techniques not taught in the license just to gain the few tenths of seconds required to get it.
My biggest gripe with the game, however, is the over-abundance of 'chase the rabbit' races. They give the lead car a massive head-start and you have to drive like a lunatic to catch it before the race ends. That's not how you teach clean racing to the players.

Re: Gran Turismo 6 (PS3, Holiday Season 2013)
^ agreed with Ruldra. As long as the time is achievable I don't see a problem with the license tests, if it's your first time on the map or with a new car, why not learn to do it properly? Granted this is a bottleneck to playing other maps but the license test races often seemed interesting enough (at least in GT2).
For me, the license tests are designed to have the player understand how the game plays/works. Getting gold has the added incentive that you receive a car for reaching said level, a reward symbolizing "now that you've proven you can drive well, here's something to actually drive with".Ruldra wrote:I like the idea of license tests. I can speak to GT3 which is likely my overall prefered entry in the series, but none the of times to get gold, NTSC wise, are beyond reach, that includes the Super License. You'll need to practice, which speaks to the purpose of why they exist. It's an exercise in learning the game and is a key component in racing - time attack. The gold times aren't nearly the best times possible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfOs49Cat7A
I think GT4 missed the mark since you get a prize car for just passing the test in addition to silver and gold marks. I too am not fond of the Missions, with the final few missions being tricky.

Not to mention that the game does have damage (who fucking cares about damage?) unlocked after a lot of playing, and more importantly, you can play your own music. I don't know what game neorichieb1971 is talking about, but it isn't Gran Turismo.Friendly wrote:Don't care enough for a long reply (that would be wasted anyway), so allow me to address only these:

Yeah, that was the point of my post

Re: Gran Turismo 6 (PS3, Holiday Season 2013)
You don't unlock damage, it's right there from the start. It's only available in arcade mode though.
Re: Gran Turismo 6 (PS3, Holiday Season 2013)
Actually, damage was added later on (by one of the updates) and wasn't available when GT5 was first released, I guess that's why xgunnBlaze thought it became available only after playing for an extended period of time.Ruldra wrote:You don't unlock damage, it's right there from the start. GT6 demo coming up next week. It will also work as the GT Academy event thing they're doing every year.

you're forgetting a console as did Namco for the first time - though.... so has everyone elseGranted that Namco did release RR7 for the PS3 and later on, added 3D glasses support with a JPN PSN d/l. Ridge Racer 7 - PS3 launch title circa 2006

infact three got missed, but given support changed -seemingly- with 3DS launch RR, i'd have thought a rough port might have been in the offing for WiiU
Anyways, on the GT front i don't quite get the complaints - it's not Ridge and it's not trying to be. It's an altogether different type of game. Don't like it? Then simply jog on

Re: Gran Turismo 6 (PS3, Holiday Season 2013)
It had damaged added. The released, shipped game didn't. And I'd have thought anyone playing something that bills itself as 'the real driving simulator' might give a shit about damage. The whole bouncing off a wall/CPU car generally seems a little immersion breaking.xgunnBlaze wrote:Not to mention that the game does have damage (who fucking cares about damage?) unlocked after a lot of playing, and more importantly, you can play your own music. Drone AI that is easy to beat? I'd rather they took the approach that the Forza series does for once. I actually have gotten pissed in a couple of the games in that series because the AI actually tries to beat your ass. Run you off the road and other things. Still Forza has yet to beat the GT series in terms of graphical quality.

Yep, I certainly did forget the 3DS port of Ridge Racer from the likes of Bandai-Namco themselves as I've got it in my gaming stash alrighty. It's a fun game despite it's overall 30fps (even if 3D mode is turned on). On the PSP side, the other two RR games would be Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer 2 to round off the final two portable RR titles at hand - both PSP RR titles runs at the silky smooth 60fps framerate indeed.dcharlieJP wrote:you're forgetting a console as did Namco for the first time - though.... so has everyone elseGranted that Namco did release RR7 for the PS3 and later on, added 3D glasses support with a JPN PSN d/l. Playing GT games is a bit like playing poker without money.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
