Alfa System week should be delightful.

You make a somewhat convincing argument.ratikal wrote:V-V has checkpoints. You know, the most unfun mechanic in shmups ever?

Look at this. Just look at it. I don't know how this could possibly look appealing to anybody to score in.
V-V is survive and collect items, Batsugun is dirty boss milking worth a massive chunk of your score. Vote V-V.

Re: STGT'12 Week 2 Voting: Toaplan Week
In this tournament only the first two loops count. This can get very creative (figuring out what parts give the most points and suiciding there?) and of course, the music is awesome.Naut wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNPALYWuM9A

It's still a completely terrible idea.

Shmups farm kiddies: "I cannot be fucked suiciding for score unless you respawn right where you die with all your powerups dumped back on top of you because being punished for dying is just unacceptable in a genre known for difficult, unforgiving gameplay."

Why didn't you join STGT? You are one of these "shmups farm kiddies" for not joining.ChainsawGuitarSP wrote:Shmups farm kiddies: "I cannot be fucked suiciding for score unless you respawn right where you die with all your powerups dumped back on top of you because being punished for dying is just unacceptable in a genre known for difficult, unforgiving gameplay."

The game just doesn't look fun at all. And restricting play to 2 loops seem just arbitrary.
I really hope it's one of the other 2.

Lies! All battlefields are conveniently laid out so that there is a support station immediately after a huge tank with giant guns, so you can exchange all your extra bombs for points. Nobody fires at these bases by agreement. It's in the Geneva accords.SuperSoaker360 wrote:Landing in random enemy bases. What a badass.

To be honest, all of these games look like crap, so can we just skip this week altogether and go to week3? :p

No, it's a racing sim with RTS elements.sikraiken wrote:Come on, seriously. Paperboy is an RPG.

Re: STGT'12 Week 2 Voting: Toaplan Week
To clarify, I've never played played any of these games (nor probably any game we're playing in this STGT), but boss milking and suiciding aren't exactly the most fun scoring methods. I think I also hate the gradius power bar system with checkpoints more than anything in shmups. I don't think paperboy has any of these, so even that would probably be better...sikraiken wrote:What do you want to play?

Ignore my post about suiciding in Flying Shark. It was a half-joke.

It does? Since what version? ShmupMAME 2.2 doesn't have it and probably not ShmupMAME 3 (which flips a coin every time my laptop boots to determine whether it's gonna run anyway), and I've been evasive of newer MAME releases.Ed Oscuro wrote:STGT'12 Week 2: Shot management
V-Five sounds fantastic with the sound now, though.
Re: STGT'12 Week 2 Voting: Toaplan Week
I've played it on shmupmame 2.2 before, played it this morning infact.gs68 wrote:It does? Since what version? Re: STGT'12 Week 2 Voting: Toaplan Week
If it's anything but V-V, I'll be pretty disappointed. I don't want such an extremely important boss milk like in Batsugun and the other game just looks like it sucks.
Re: STGT'12 Week 2 Voting: Toaplan Week
I don't know how it's humanly possible to think Hishouzame sucks. It's one of the single best Toaplan games in existence, if not one of the best shmups.

Re: STGT'12 Week 2 Voting: Toaplan Week
V-V doesn't have any sound in ShmupMAME for me, either, but I've just tried it in MAME 0.143u7 and it sounded great. You might want to give that version a try, gs68. It should work fine - I'm running it on a shitty old laptop.

Re: STGT'12 Week 2 Voting: Toaplan Week
I think it's possible by just looking at it.trap15 wrote:I don't know how it's humanly possible to think Hishouzame sucks. It's one of the single best Toaplan games in existence, if not one of the best shmups.
Apart from that it doesn't even have bosses there is literally not a single bullet on screen for over a minute.
On stage 4
Only two loops? That's too bad as otherwise milking checkpoints doesn't sound too interesting given that's essentially the only way to differentiate scores. It's a tough game and generally if some players would be able to acheive counterstop it could be possible to see how far one gets (versus the Mars Matrix route). I don't think many people would be jumping at the bit at this endurance test possibility either in contrast to checkpoint milking so it's almost a zero sum outcome with Flying Shark.emphatic wrote:In this tournament only the first two loops count. Having said that V-Five is a good call since little is known about it and only has 2 rounds. Batsugun normal would be a real points squeeze/bomb+live hoarding event although only being 5 stages could be appealing due to shorter length of the run.

Re: STGT'12 Week 2 Voting: Toaplan Week
Basically, next week boils down to:
Hishouzame: Find which checkpoint gives the most points and milk it
Batsugun: Milk Jupiter
V-V: No-miss + collect all crystals
I expect a lot of frustration no matter which one is picked.
