Of course, it's statistically inevitable.
Here's a genuinely funny Family Circus produced out of its tens of thousands:

How do banner ads spoil the Penny Arcade experience? The entire theme of the strip is product placement. THAT's why they're the Mercedes-driving kings of the webcomic world instead of, say, Perry Bible Fellowship.njiska wrote:There's no question that on most sites ads are annoying, intrusive and generally ruin what would otherwise be a good experience.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Actually, to be fair, I don't mind PA's ads at all. But there are a lot of sites with annoying ads that I would love to see go away. I'm more posting in favour of the model than in favour of PA no needing ads.Mischief Maker wrote:How do banner ads spoil the Penny Arcade experience? $500 for a single ReTweet?
KickStarter is like the Dragon's Den TV show, but everyone gets money.
Maybe I should set up one when it starts over here, should be easier than getting a job, after all...

PSX Vita: Slightly more popular than Color TV-Game system. Almost as successful as the Wii U.

I don't agree with the way they're going about it, but I kind of sympathise. Quality, influence-free gaming news used to cost a fiver a month and you simply can't get it anymore. The Internet is such that people on it seem to think that everything on there should be free and seem outraged if someone asks for money. I would fucking kill for a website that reviewed games, honestly, and relied on subs rather than ads. Sadly, in our rush to the bottom, such a thing will never happen.

I think there's also a huge gap between what people might pay for a tangible object vs. what they want to pay for data. And there's also the "what? But I already pay for Internet!" issue to contend with.Marc wrote:I don't agree with the way they're going about it, but I kind of sympathise. But seriously, aggregate reader scores are more accurate than any monolithic guy pushing a button. You know you've got enthusiasts rating the product instead of a nocarebear. (Cave games on GFaqs average in the 8 to 9 range, while the Gunbirds hover around 7.) Cut off the first five points or divide everything by 2, and voila, you get a five star system.
Not sure what more you could want, you can get the gist of what a game is off youtube, any number of reviews, or just browsing its NeoGaf thread. I mean, I used to love Next Generation, but it's been replaced with Gamasutra and blogs and such.
Considering what a pile of shit our options used to be, (which was absolutely never influence free. Bathed in ads cover to cover, RetroGamer type stuff is the only kind of stuff that could come close to honesty) it's just very strange for me to accept someone feels this way.

Update: They've reached their goal. A quarter of a million dollars.
Just think of all the great Dickwolves comics that await us now that they're no longer shackled by their Puritan Advertisers!
