Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
Assuming that the US version of Otomedius Excellent is finally coming out next week, that one will probably be a pretty memorable one to pick up, if only because I've had the thing on pre-order for almost a year and a half.
Otherwise, I'd probably name the arrival of my Saturn copies of DoDonPachi and Cotton Boomerang, since they were my very first imports: from that point forward, there was no going back.

That's cool of Jesse. Aero Fighters 2 is great fun!
Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
1. Getting a NES for Christmas back in 1988. Later on, I got 1942, Gyruss, and Gradius. There were a coupla other shoot-'em-ups (top scrollers), but I forgot their names.
2. Getting a SNES in 1992. Then buying Super R-Type, Gradius III, Phalanx, Axelay, Super E.D.F., Super Darius, U.N. Squadron, and a Parodius game (I still have that one)
3. Getting a TurboDuo in 1993, which came bundled with Gate Of Thunder.
4. Getting a s***box 3-s***ty in 2010 with Raiden IV and DeathSmiles (U.S. version).
5. Getting a s***box Asia console in 2011 and buying up most of the shoot-'em-ups for it.
Each was as exciting as the previous

Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
I never bought a PCB...... no game is worth $1500 for me !
(that's just my opinion btw)
My first shmups games were Gradius, Exerion, Galaga, Galaxian, Argus, B-wings, Quarth, Star Soldier, Twinbee, 1942, Xevious, Magmax, Macross, Sky Destroyer, all on my 115-in-1 pirated nes cart, which cost $250 back then.
I was pretty excited when I got that for christmas...... I never beat any of those.

Without a doubt, I will say ALLTYNEX Second and Crimzon Clover. The former because I'm a Siter Skain fan, and the latter because well... IT'S CRIMZON CLOVER!

Do you expect S-video to be any improvement over component, no less? Or do you mean composite? If you meant the former, it wouldn't be the first time I'd read something along those lines, but it goes against the theory.rancor wrote:I recently bought an S-video cable for Saturn as well off ebay.. Perhaps we got it from the same seller? Is yours from retro_console_accessories? Interested to see if there's any improvement over the component cables I use now.

That's AV. Composite carries all the audio and video thru one port.rancor wrote:Excuse my not being perfect... In order of picture quality from worst to best: composite, AV, S-video, component.
OT:It would be hard to top the triple purchase of Futari, Ketsui and Espy 2, which I purchased in lieu of my J360.

Getting my Blast City and shortly after this purchase, getting Esp Ra.De. As my first (and only) PCB. Getting Mushifutari, Esp 2 and MMP/PS for the box was rather exciting too. Oh, and getting Crimzon Clover from Rancor was also a special moment.

Lol what?stryc9 wrote: That's AV. Composite carries all the audio and video thru one port.

AV is just short for "Audio/Video", it could be anything, but is usually used for Composite, which is called that because the red, blue and green channel are all on the same port (the yellow cable), the left and right audio channels each on their own.
The only format I know of that uses both video and audio on the same single "pin", is RF (radio frequency), which is obviously the same signal TVs use receive analog TV channels, as well as radio antennas, etc.
Also, you seemed to forget RGB which is the single most important signal for anyone interested in arcade games and consoles up until the previous generation, not only for the sake of getting good video quality, but because of the technical aspect of it. Of course, component is pretty much the same as RGB, just encoded differently for some reason.
I don't mean to sound degratory, but you should know all of this, and now you do.

Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
Lotta offers (timewasters) on that; you came thru, true blue! Glad you are enjoying them. I'll post out your long lost 360 paperworks this weekend. ;^Ddunpeal2064 wrote:I think my favorite purchase was getting my japanese 360 with Ketsui, mostly because I didn't think it was gonna happen.
My top purchase(s): Sin&Punishment + GodTrooperZ complete, mint, & ¥3200 out the door for both. Exchange rate on the day of this score? 1 usd= 173¥. Thanks, MidoriMart!

Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
Saturn version of Radiant Silvergun for me. It was many years ago when I was making minimum wage and it took a long while to scrape together the funds for it.
Then, in a rush, I screwed up the money order I used to purchase it, and the seller couldn't cash. So he sent it back, but in order to get a refund I needed a state ID, which having just turned 16, I didn't have.
So I went down to the DMV and got my learner's permit. Not so I could drive. But so I could get my refund, get a new money order, and play Radiant Silvergun.

Futari was the first shmup I've bought in many years. I kinda never want to play MAME ever again. I need a Japanese 360 so I can try to get my hands on DOJ, Ketsui, and DFK. I also want to build some sort of enclosure for my tated TV so it looks cleaner.
Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
Just realized that DFK is ported as Dodonpahi Resurrection, which apparently works fine on US 360 consoles. Can't wait to drop by Video Games New York and pick this up.

Whoa! I just moved to Brooklyn (Park Slope) and I had no idea a store like that existed. I was going to get it from NCSX but I'll definitely check this store out.finisherr wrote:Just realized that DFK is ported as Dodonpahi Resurrection, which apparently works fine on US 360 consoles. I'm also excited to check out Next Level arcade in Sunset Park. I'm assuming it's all fighters but still cool.
Oh yea... My most exciting purchase was definitely Futari. I'm pretty excited to get DFK Resurection too.
Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
My lady lives in Prospect Park South so I'm in that area often. We're likely moving to South Slope/Windsor Terrace together next year. Perhaps we should do some 2 player runs of Futari and Resurrection sometime. Anyway, definitely visit Video Games New York. Great staff. Great inventory.

Futari 1.5 by a landslide. I had just recently played Cave games for the first time ever on a hacked PS2, and soon after, Futari was announced. I probably watched the preview video every day. Then it came out, and it was better than I could have possibly imagined. I thought it was the perfect shooter. Then I downloaded Black Label and realized that was possibly the best game of all time, and totally eclipsed 1.5 for me.

NES: Fester's Quest (Sunsoft), surprisingly challenging maze shooter, took a while to finish without a rapid fire controller.
Sega Genesis: Lightening Force (Technosoft), the US alternate name for Thunderforce IV, awesome even with the slowdown.
PSOne: Namco Museum volume 2 (Namco), has an arcade close enough version of Gaplus in the compilation.
PS2: Raiden III (Moss)--once I got used to the harder to see yellow bullets, this is a great game.

Futari and Muchi Muchi Pork.
Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
Probably Ibara PS2. It was my first Japanese import, and it had scantily clad ladies on the box
It's that or Gamera 2000, which I love because it's GAMERA, plays like Rez, and because it features incredible acting.
