However, what's the reason that standard def systems such as the PCE, SFC and Saturn look sooo much better than 2D games piped through the PS2 in component?
Welcome to the world of shitty interlacing/filtering (Mushihimesma is a prime example) of the PS2 age. Try something like Strider 1 on the PS2, or Dodonpachi, Gradius Gaiden, DOJ ect. Something that is natively 240p on the PS2. It should look as good as the saturn.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Cool, thanks. That explains as to why HSF2 Anniversary looks so poor now I know it's 480i :(

really not too many, only a handful (Ico, DDP DOJ, ESPGaluda, Disgaea). Some are patchable to 240p (we've got a thread for them, somewhere). Far more titles on the PS2 are 480p compatible which is a nice alternative...

Okay, just to wrap this up. The RGB modded GC lead was broken. The guy opened it and said it had 2 broken connections. I got a refund.

My component cable arrived today, here's what I found:

- 480i Thru XRGB2+: It looks pretty poor compared to other methods. The image is slightly dull (with all scanlines off of course.) I'm not happy to run GC games this way, so I don't think I'll be hooking it up this way again. XRGB2+ is really all about 240p SD gaming isn't it?

- 480i direct to TV: I first used this with Double Dash. The picture is a lot clearer than with the XRGB2+ and pretty sharp. The only issue I can find is that it's quite dark in 480i. I tried with Skies of Arcadia too (which has no 480p mode) and it's also very dark in places. I know I also have probs with my Wii being too dark through component - and that's with the TV brightness and contrast right up, so I wonder if my TV is not too hot with black tones.

- 480p direct to TV: This is the one of course. Strider was on the money, Double Dash looks so sharp it's unreal - although I think what helps with this game is it's naturally bright. For instance, F-Zero GX does look incredible (when does it not?) but on a stage like Lightning it's still a little too dark for my liking even with 480p, but on Aeropolis, a bright stage, it's stunning.

One thing I can't figure is why widescreen looks a little poor even when there's an in-game optimisation option. For instance, DD doesn't have a widescreen option, so I can understand it looks bad when stretched - but F-Zero GX does, and still it looks a lot better when it's in 4:3 mode. 16:9 just has slightly lower quality, that's the only way I can see it.

Anyway, apart from a small issue I may have with a broken wire (it ain't my year for lead purchasing) it's looking good so far.

Because the widescreen option just changes the proportions on the 3D models so they won't look deformed on a 16:9 aspect TV but the output resolution is the same.

Ah, sthat explains it then, thanks nZero. 4:3 it is then.

As for the brightness thing, it's odd how my TV seems to make dark objects a lot darker with Nintendo consoles. I don't specifically notice this with the 360 or PS2 for instance, but with the Wii and GC it's pretty obvious.
There were times when playing Twilight Princess through component I had to jack every TV option up to max because certain parts of the game were just too dark. Okami on the Wii was the most obvious example of this - I actually couldn't see certain parts properly. Bright sections always look wonderful though. :?

The GC component seems to have a similar effect, although it may be a touch cleaner and clearer than Wii component.
