Would you play a Shmup with rap music in the background?
I'd actually like any music that has some good contrast. Gradius V and Radiant Silvergun are done pretty good, but certainly don't rock me like darius gaiden, shienryu (LOVE it) and the truxtons (although they do build up some great tension).
I really dislike the trend to put wishy-washy orchestrated techno or violins in shmups where a nice "song" would do much better. Plus, I like when each level sounds really different.
I even really liked the slow metal ballad in Kyokyuku Tiger II.

I would play a shmup with pretty much any kind of music, just not rap. I can't imagine any developer having that bad taste, but who knows maybe hell freezes over and EA makes a shmup (probably called ghettoblaster underground)
.

The closest thing I've done is play Metal Slug 3 while listening to this Autechre song P.:Ntil, which sounds kind of like a hip-hop beat in radioactive decay.
Outside of pretentious IDM, though, no way in hell!

Normally I would think this is a bad idea, but what about a urban-themed shmup.
All the selectable ships are different "urban lifestyle guys" (you, people like pimps, gangstas, and atheltes) with their flying pimpmoblies and they gotta get their hoes, hood, money, or whatever back.
Normally rap is a poor choice for any game that is fast-paced, but hey, if it'll make Joe Mainstream happy.

The only time I ever listen to Rap music is when I'm playing San Andreas. Due to the "mood". Still, its a fun game, but gangsta's are not my thing.
Other than that, my personal taste in music is about as far away from Rap as you can get.
For that matter, I don't think Rap is appropriate for racing games either! (think EA here)

[quote="FatCobra"]Hey, if there can be a shmup with Disco as a theme, why not rap? It could happen.....[/quote
No, not really...Disco is at least "music", whereas Rap is basically some guy rhyming to a drum machine. Big difference.
BTW: Dangun also features a few good handfulls of Rock Guitar.
(ship select, and Boss battles)

As much as I dislike rap, I'm not really one to consider it non-music because of its style. There are some surprisingly competent rap musicians out there, actually, and it also opens up the proverbial can of worms for other genres with things like "well is electronic music really music?" and so forth.
And I hear Dangun rocks, is it worth checking out sometime?

I actually don't much care for it in Border Down either. I feel it is pretty out of place.Nemo wrote:Apparently you've never played Border Down.CMoon wrote:No slight to rap or hip-hop, but I think the music is ill-suited to shmups. I actually just got done playing some Border Down, and I have to say that the jazz fits it so well. If it had rock, electronic, pop or country of as-high caliber as Yack's jazz fusion (is that what it is?), it'd be decent--but it's so good as it is, I wouldn't trade it for anything. Not to mention... Jazz and the future simple go well together, if you ask me.
It helps that I don't mind the style of music, so I suppose that if you really had something against it, you might think that it's out of place...
On the topic; I agree that if it's done well, I'd probably play a shmup with anything. If it's not done to be trendy, if it's not done "just because," if it's not done without heart... I'll play it, and I'll probably enjoy the experience!
(This topic reminds me of how I played a later level in Quake II while listening to Sasha Alexander, and it was delightfully twisted. "If you believe, then let it out... " *rat-tat-tat-tat-tat* *splat*)

NO
Also, I was just thinking of music with lyrics in shmups. Darius Gaiden has a little bit, but it's just the whole "close your eyes..." thing. That was really effective, though, and it would be cool to see more stuff like it.
If using RF could get you infected with HIV as indicated by another forum member's post, a shmup with rap will cause your d*** to rot and fall off.
No, no, and a thousand times, NO.
That's just as bad as a fursuit-themed shmup or FPS. And this coming from someone that could be considered as a furry. *Activates Anti-Can-O-Worms Device (TM) *

Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.
Once again, this thread should be retitled -- to "Do you like rap music?", because that's basically what it's asking (or how it's being answered). It would be hard to pull off, but it could be done. Whoever mentioned Deltron 3030, I think you're spot on the money. I think he COULD pull it off, his rap is awesome and not at all textbook. It all depends on the context you place it in within the game and such, too.

It can work.
For Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, Capcom enlisted DJ Infinite. He composed along w/ Hideki Okugawa 3 songs. "Three" for the opening, an ending theme and a remix of three.
You'd think a rap about a fighting game would suck but it doesn't. Its not about the game but the fight and struggle itself. Vocals are sprinkled all throughout the game and it works well and isn't overused or inappropriate. From the character select to the announcers. The stage themes capture that "phat" beat, worldly ethnicity, and diversity with in the "urban" genre. This includes jazz, big beat, heavy rock, disco tribal, techno, rap club music, and good old drum&bass. Some ppl still hate the soundtrack and the only reason is that its like rap. Which is ok, ya gotta hate something.
I hate,.. hate J-pop/rock/punk. Its regular rock/pop only in Jp; that makes it better! And emo/screamo toe;)

some of guwanges music could arguably be used for rap. that said, 'rap' can be taken different ways. id be fine with instrumentals being used if they were good and being used well, but probably just be annoyed by lyrics...which sorta define rap to begin with. so uh, in that sense i wouldnt like it, but the back music itself would be fine (if its even considered to be rap when it doesnt have lyrics).
whatever music can be used for whatever if everything meshes well enough. dangun, 3rd strike, cowboy bebop, and samurai champloo have sorta contradicting music/subject matter but they work (not that im a big fan of all the stuff in 3rd strike, but im fine with it).
