First was the Neo Geo Cart Version.mjclark wrote: Sorry to sound ignorant but what happened with "Last Hope" then? I thought there was only one DC version...
Then came the DC Version, which had more balanced gameplay.
Then came the Neo Geo CD Version which was an updated DC version + Superplay DVD.

Here's how it happened...mjclark wrote:Sorry to sound ignorant but what happened with "Last Hope" then? First came the Neo-Geo cart version. People had a number of complaints about it, ranging from the explosions having too much shrapnel and hiding the bullets (which were the same color as the explosions), to not being able to tell if you're hitting an enemy/boss. The Dreamcast version came out, and addressed a number of the issues people had about Neo-Geo version. There were still come complaints, centering mostly around bullet visibility, and the the lack of controller configurations for the pod. Finally, the Neo-Geo CD version came out, adding in more controller options, and changing the colors of the bullets.
So basically, you had Last Hope 1.0 on the Neo-Geo, Last Hope 1.1 on the Dreamcast (which also let you play the game as it was on the NG), and Last Hope 1.2 on the Neo-Geo CD (which let you play it as it was on the NG and the DC as well)... all released within a year-and-a-half's time span. That's what I meant by "stepping stone" syndrome.
Keep in mind, I liked the game. I still play it from time to time, and have no regrets in buying it. I just had an issue with how the game kept getting updated, with no way to update the past versions (which let to some people feeling like test players who had to pay, instead of being paid

The advantage here is that Söldner X started off as a PC game (although the PS3 version was announced along) and, thus, patching it should be no drama, right? (I hope) And, in any case, they could later release a 'regular boxed' version of the game (as in, without the OST or any other goodies, just cd+manual+case, because I'm an analogical dinosaur and I like staring at the cases
) with all the updates already applied.

Thank you, you can listen to a stream of the complete Söldner-X title track here, plus the medley from some of the ingame tracks (you'll find some PS3 exclusive tunes in there):lilmanjs wrote:the soundtrack is amazing for the game but I don't have a computer that can run the game itself. I'd say get the game as I've heard good things about the PC version.

PS. You're welcome to add yourself to my profile there, if you don't mind being called a fan.

Ok, just finished my first run. Here's some of my thought:
The graphics look pretty damn good. There's a whole lot of enemies, the standard gun is pretty good for taking them out, but the beam gun is very weak. The chaining system is kinda weird, but not hard to figure out. The first level was pretty easy, though the boss took forever to kill.. It starts getting a little crazy on the second level, that's about as far as I got. I'm going to need some more playtime, but so far so good. Anyone else have it yet?

Make sure to read the tutorial. One of the secrets of the game is learning how to work with switching the weapons at the right time and using them to get maximum affinity for particular enemies. Once you get the hang of it, you'll figure out which enemies are to be taken down with which weapon. Also, some enemies have more hitpoints than other (the little numbers everywhere), plus the strength of your weapon even varies depending on it's bar status. A fully loaded, cooled weapon is more dangerous. It's really quite intriguing.Matsunaga wrote:The chaining system is kinda weird, but not hard to figure out.

From the NeoGaf Forum, there's a thread on there as well, I'll just copy/paste it here (from a guy called pancakesandsex), I think it explains nicely the differences to the PC version:
I bought it today and I think it is crappity smacking awesome. I also bought the pc version day one, and although it was flawed and I sucked at it I very much enjoyed it.
-Easy mode fixes my balance complaints about the pc version, that is the default mode, and it's much more playable in the way we are all used to playing shooters. It gives you a chance to get used to it before mercilessly killing you in level 2
-Theres no slowdown that isn't intentional, its fast, the enemy patterns are unusual and it's got a steep learning curve to the powerup / scoring system
-The only thing i don't like about the port is the way the login system works. It should be doing that stuff in the background while I start playing, not delaying me for a few seconds at the title screen. At the end of the day though, it's only a few seconds.
For those that are not familiar with the pc version:
-The music is awesome and has a great beat.
-The announcer is bad ass, and really adds to the atmosphere.
-The story sequences are cheesy and robo-woman voice is awesome.
Mechanics explanations:
-There are 2 bars, health and weapon. It's not a one shot kill game.
-Your weapons are limited. You have 2 main weapons that recharge infinitely (you will be swapping between these most of the time) and special pickup weapons that are more powerful but do not recharge. There is a pickup that recharges whatever weapon you have selected at the time.
-Switching weapons is not only smart play to take advantage of enemy weakness, but it's required in order to use the scoring system, and get extra power ups.
-Killing an enemy and getting special pickups gives you chain energy, when your bar goes green, switch weapons to increase your chain level. When it hits max, and you swap, a poweup is released.
-This maximum chain level increases every time you chain, and the higher the chain level the more useful the powerup.
darn you ryokomatsu you beat me to making this thread.
Anyone who gets this game gets RESPECK KNUCKLES.
COME ON cheapskates its ten dollars. This is not the greatest horizontal shooter ever made, but it's a well made game that does a lot of things differently than it's genre brothers. You all spent 6x that much buying much worse at some point, and I guarantee you will get your money's worth if you give a crap about shooters.

Purchased this last night. Knew nothing about the game but I like to support shmups and their developers whenever I can. Only had time to play 2 credits so don't really have any enlightening impressions but I like it. It's only $10 guys, give it a shot. It definately feels much more polished and is a lot more fun than Joint Strike (or whatever it's called)anyway....

How about… hmm… procedural content generation, optimized code, more efficient compresion algorithms for non-procedural data, something else to that extent?soniq-man wrote:Cut down what? Less graphics? Less Music? Less sfx? Less levels? It's more tricky than you think.
