I think the point PROMETHEUS is trying to make is that having to drudge through the first loop every time you play to practice the second loop gets extremely tiresome and boring after you've completely mastered the first loop. This is why having the option to start from the second loop is an extremely nice feature in looping games, and the absence of such a feature is a bit off-putting to anyone wanting to master the game.jonny5 wrote:so you are saying you like futari more because its easier? and it is...at least scoring wise...
if you have 'mastered' the first loop of ketsui, you should be ready to move on to the 2nd loop....otherwise you need more work
I think he's referring to the fact that in the Mushi games, they split the difficulties in to three one loop modes as opposed to one two loop game. It kinda sucks to have to play through first loop to practice the second.jonny5 wrote:so you are saying you like futari more because its easier? and it is...at least scoring wise...

Futari isn't easier in any way, it's just less stupid imo. Not only when you want to practice 2nd loop is it incredibly boring to play 1st loop, but also when you're just trying 1000 times to get your highest score ever. It's a HUGE waste of time. A game is good when it's hard from the first stage, like Futari is. I think Modes > loops. I love Ketsui though, it's one of the games I enjoy the most when I can get my hands on it for a short time, but I wouldn't play it seriously because it just loops like that. Same for DFK which is probably even worse due to how easy the first loop seems once mastered.
Obviously what made me hate loops like that is Dodonpachi, although it's probably the worst exemple of a terrible looping design, with its exponential, no-mistakes-allowed scoring system, and ultra boring easy first stages (hopefully they aren't harder though, because then the exponential+no mistake thing would be just 100% unbearable). Ketsui is worlds better than that, it's harder, it allows mistakes, and it's not exponential.

WELCOME TO VIOLENT CITY!
Seriously, though I haven't played the newer Cave output (Ibara is sitting on my shelf waiting for me to get with the program and fix my cab) I think Batrider sets the bar so high it'd be very hard to top. It's not so absurdly over the top that it scares off newbies and it's got a shitload of character and style in its graphics, art and character design. There's plenty of different ways to approach the game, be it the three premade teams, as one of 4 versions of the 18 characters or with a custom team, not to mention the fact that it's just as good as a straight forward fuck-shit-up style shooter as it is a technical high score game. There's just so much variety in the game that I think even games with more technical and finely tuned scoring systems (DOJ, Ikaruga) come out behind. Plus, the fact that you don't have to fuck around with a forced scoring gimmick (Bakraid) or fussy rank management (Garegga) puts it on the top of Raizing's output.

Instead of having the option, why not abandon the whole loop idea?I think the point PROMETHEUS is trying to make is that having to drudge through the first loop every time you play to practice the second loop gets extremely tiresome and boring after you've completely mastered the first loop.
