Vertical VS Horizonal Shmups

You're not alone, I agree with you on that one.

I don't really have a preference for either vets or horis in general. But often I'll go for a tough vert when I want a more visceral experience - the general lack of ground obstacles makes them feel slightly more 'pure' to me, maybe a little more simple and intuitive to play, and certainly a lot easier to 'zone out' on and just let the subconscious and reflexes take over. On the flip side I think there's greater room for horis to have a little more individual character, and generally for me they require quite a bit more conscious thought to play.

Yeah. I could see that. The games like GigaWing are fast and free, but Gradius has its own feel. It feels like that's the way it should be played.
