And for a Japanese there are "first person shooting games", "3D shooting games", "scroll action shooting games"... You see, no differences at all.
But it's only the minority that make this distinction. I had troubles with a guy I traded wtih in Osaka at a time when I "wasn't into shooting games". He passed up on getting me a lot of good games I wanted b/c he classified them as so. Gain Ground SX sealed (which at the time I really wanted) for the PC-Engine was the one casuality I remember.
Not really. For a non-American that word sounds a bit lame. Linguistically poor, if you ask me.
I don't care for the word shmup either, so I don't use it. I've only ever called scroll shooting games shooters... since I was a kid. Super Mario Bros. is no doubt a running and jumping game, but I don't call it that. I call it a platformer, whereas the Japanese would call it an action game. If I stuck to the Japanese tradition of 'shooting game' I'd have to put them all (rail shooters, guncon games, etc.) under that umbrella and I think they deserve further categorization.
Japanese sites generally refer to publisher of a game as "maker" and often (in cases of old games) don't mention the developers. I would never push that on anyone, although I did in the
early days of Japanese Gaming and got nothing but complaints. (Warning -- contraversial design).
And God knows American members are just a part here.
True, but I am American, so generally write words that seem native to me. I would love to make everyone happy, but can't. Hence, I spell words 'color' and 'humor' as such, instead of 'colour' and 'humour'. Gotta draw the line somewhere.
I think when it comes down to it, I will always considering "shooting game" to be Engrish
Explain me why, please.
B/c it's an English term coined by the Japanese. I never heard it until I moved to Japan and started playing games again there....regardless if it's used by other English speaking countries. I also find this extremely weird since when Japanese are selling games, they often make up their own categories. "Dramatic spray paint action adventure".
OT: Forot to credit you for finding the Akuu Gallet messup on ESPRade -- fixed.
