The only thing that really keeps me with my GC is Mr. Driller : Drill Land. Damn those singing children.

Hehe, there's almost no exclusives in that list. The ones that are are boring like Metroid Prime.
Hmmm. Metroid Prime boring? To each their own but maybe I think you have boring tastes? Also, Viewtiful Joe appeared first on GC, took a whole year for the series to appear on PS2 IIRC. What's the point of getting the PS2 revs? So I can play with Dante? Whoopty do. And I was just using Shiki, Ika, CF ect. to show the Cube is a much beter system for shooters than the '64 was.

Awkward my rear end. The control scheme in Prime is brilliant and felt just like Super Metroid in a 3D world. It even had platform jumping (smoothest jumping in a FPS ever) and platform morph ball mazes. Prime integrated the feel of the old Metroid series even better than Mario 64 did of its previous games IMHO.

I've not played all that far into it, but I wouldn'ty exactly call Metroid Prime's control scheme intiutive, nor would I say it retained the ease of control in Super Metroid. It works, and after a while you get mostly used to it, but I find Prime to be a lot trickier to control than the other Metroid games were.

Well, not exactly like Super Metroid, even 8-bit Metroid with its viciously designed levels, unforgiving enemy placement and old school bugs (ie: enemies can fly through doors at you) has slightly better control than Prime. But Prime is darn close to the "real thing." And I thought the GC pad lent itself really well to the game, you don't have to push select to get missles or power bombs, just push Y. Strafing took a while to get used to though. Halo has better strafing. But lock on using the L button feels just like hitting L or R in Super Metroid to aim up or down.

I really can't believe no one else mentions the GBA player. It must be because I am the only one who (1) doesn't dig handhelds but (2) likes a lot of the GBA titles. So what it ends up coming down to for me is that neither the Gamecube nor GBA line ups are great, but when you put the two together you get a decent line up.

Never mind it actually turns the GC into the only system that has EVERY Zelda game on it...and that is kinda cool.

I don't play the game much, but when I do, christ. One of the best GC games. I need to get Mr. Driller 2, it just came out on the GBA.

I'd say keep holding on to it for this year at least and sell it around the holiday season or early next year! Keep the games you truly like (sell the others to raise some cash and gain shelfspace), buy a Revolution and play the games you like on that one (it's backwards compatible!) and be able to play Revolution games as well...

This is actually what I am planning to do! :)

I'll admit, strafing in Halo is much better than Metroid obviously. But like I said, the R + L lock on felt much as it did in Super Metroid so it wasn't a huge loss to me. Sorry if I sounded cranky before.

Maybe this is slightly off topic but, I played RE4 through the end and I didn't find it an absolute masterwork. It's damn good as a game (well, especially if you consider how much previous RE sucked), but it does have its flaws:

-minor spoilers-

-The story is plain horrible. This might be no big deal for many, but I really left it thinking that compared to it, Resident Evil (1996) was written by Shakespeare. Also, since you're stuck with one character and one ending, the game does not encourage replayability. I mean, it is FUN to play it again to test the powerful new weapons, but you won't uncover anything of the story or such.

-The dialogues and voice acting are the most cheesy thing I've heard. The bad guys you'll face are ridiculous at best. The only one that had potential as a character does play a very little part. I'm sure many will think that ridiculous plot and cheesy dialogues are the standard for RE, but frankly I was disappointed to see such a huge effort from Capcom (an effort in the name of change) to result in another corny B movie.

-The game switched heavily from "survival horror" to an "action game". Though this is the biggest change and therefore it was the needed thing to do (and the bringer of most positive aspects), I often found myself without a genuine sense of fear. I played it more like an Onimusha. Especially later on, when you're loaded with weapons and pretty much know how to deal with each enemy type.

-Finally, I know I'm being extremely picky here, but... The game does have a great variety of backgrounds, and this is very nice. The only problem is, they exaggerated it, and it becomes schizophrenic. One minute you're in a medieval castle, the minute later in a temple-of-doom catacombs with rollercoaster, then in the sewers, then a military island, laboratory... It doesn't get very cohesive, and it feels like they throwed in all the action movies they could think of.

That said, narrative and atmosphere issues aside, the gameplay is really the best I've played recently, controls are spot on, camera is flawless, graphically it's a masterwork. You still need to play it if you haven't, mind you. And I wouldn't rely at all on the PS2 port.

Only, I started it with the highest expectations I could have. And for the first hours (the village-church-swamp part) the game exceeded them. I quickly told all my friends I was playing the best NGC game ever. Then, hours later, the enthusiasm fades a bit.
The game does shot his best bullets at the very beginning, and in the end I had to admit that despite the clumsy, uncomfortable controls, Metroid Prime was still the best NGC game after all. RE4 is great but it's not "organic" in its elements, you play it with great fun but eventually it leaves you very little.

***

But, there's a saving grace to NGC: Gamecube Gameboy Player, the best peripheral ever. I can play Link's Awakening, Mystic Quest, Shantae, Gradius Advance, Castlevania Aria of Sorrow all on a 21inch TV, without going blind. That is the only real reason you should keep your NGC.

Man, Dead or Alive looks miles better on Psone than it does on SS. So better than it's almost DOA 1.5. Just face it.

Same thing for Tomb Raider: PSone looks gorgeous, Saturn is somewhat faster, but blocky and pixellated, and without reflections effects (just look at those save crystals). Not to mention Wipeout.

turrican: i find the storyline pretty good actually, not much going on, but no useless 3rg rate melodrama garbage as seen in 90% of the games now, it does what its supposed to do fine, and personally i found it superb.

SPOILER: the only thing that annoyed me is when leon screams like a kid when the latin dude dies, he knows him for a few hours or something.
then again, it can be because he's kind of the only person who can help leon with the disease, and him dying is kinda leon's only hope dying.

and im considering it one of the best games ever done (omg just liek IGN no sorry i are lame pardon me jp) is because its much more of a "game" than most of the shit out lately.
the previous resident evil were tedious and boring, you might be unhappy because you see too much different backgrounds in it, i consider it way too good to be true.
a game where you play 25 hours and almost dont go trough the same area twice? do you prefer fun stuff or actually tedious? why does every background have to be explained? who gives a fuck?

i know when i was playing, i told myself once "ok, enough with these backgrounds already, i hope something new comes" and just then, i have a guerilla fight in an arab-typed village? fuckin genious, yes.
resident evil 4 isnt a novel, its a videogame, and more videogames should be like it.

"but its not like resident evil" if it was, i wouldnt be playing it, and most people wouldnt either.
i played resident evil 2 and enjoyed it somewhat, then i played 3 and foundout its the same garbage everytime and stopped, same with code veronica.

to quote maddox "if i wanted to search shit for hours, id clean my room"

i dont know about replay value, all i know is that im going trought the game once again with a higher difficulty, which is fine because i usually dont play these type of games twice.

its funny, i had the opposite feeling than you. at first i just played it after hearing so much good stuff about it, preparing myself to be bored with tedious stuff and play a shmup instead, but after a few hours, my interest was high, and with the constant rhytm the game has, i was not bored once, nor did the enthusiasm fade for a bit.

tho i can relate, if you expected classic resident evil, its not the game you wanted.

to sum it up, its resident evil, with less resident and more evil.

@Vagrant: (SPOILERS BELOW)

"i find the storyline pretty good actually, not much going on"

Yeah, exactly, not much going on: I started and the only thing I must knew was that I had to save Bush's daughter (lol). I was hoping to uncover a plot of sort, but no. Actually, there is no storyline besides "go rescue the girl"

"and personally i found it superb."

I think the really superb part you see in it is that the story doesn't mess with the game. Which is fine. I told this before, as a game RE4 is great. Great games don't necessarily need a story, and in fact, RE4 has the same amount of story that Super mario Bros has.

Which leads me to another issue I had with RE4. Very ugly "codec-wannabe" sequences. I know many MGS fans that will admit codec was not the greatest thing in the series. So I can't see why RE had to mimic that idea, and make it 100% worse. codec intermission at least require some great script, and RE4 missed this. The sad truth is that a complementary character like Para-Medic has more depth, carisma than any of the RE4 characters.

Was it really necessary to contact Hunnigan to tell "that something is wrong in this place?" Or even worse, get your radio hacked so that the enemies call you to mock and laugh at you? I found that quite irritating. Since Leon just has to save Ashely, the game might as well be mute.

"the only thing that annoyed me is when leon screams like a kid when the latin dude dies, he knows him for a few hours or something."

Yeah, this leads me to another gripe too. Luis Sera was an awesome character. His Johnny Depp look, his kind of humour talking, he was the best of the show. That's why I thought getting rid of him so quickly was not a good idea. I honestly would have wanted to see more of him.

And it is not the single case. Take Krauser. He is one great character. The best villain you face. It's kind of disappointing that the only background you are given is that he and Leon "were buddies", and then "they" told Leon "he was crashed on a plane". Come on, Capcom how do you think I can feel attached to a character if you're so greedy on details?
The battle with Krauser is one of the highpoint of the game, really brilliant. On the other hand, when you take him down, you have to face a very clichè guy (Lord Saddler). Saddler is a pityful character, the "nth" madman that wants to take over the world and even transforms in a monster in the end. I think Capcom should have done the opposite, use Saddler as a mid boss and keep Krauser as the final boss.

"im considering it one of the best games ever done (omg just liek IGN no sorry i are lame pardon me jp) is because its much more of a "game" than most of the shit out lately."

I sorta got that. I don't have the slightest idea of what you're referring to, but I had this feeling you're not an MGS fan, huh?
But I ultimately disagree a lot on this; a good story and an immersive atmosphere don't detract from a "game". If you don't absolutely want to read it, you can skip the story, but for those who enjoy it, RE4 is lacking in that regard. I hope you'll admit that RE1 & RE2 had more plot than this one.

"the previous resident evil were tedious and boring, you might be unhappy because you see too much different backgrounds in it, i consider it way too good to be true.
a game where you play 25 hours and almost dont go trough the same area twice? do you prefer fun stuff or actually tedious? why does every background have to be explained? who gives a fuck?"

Well, how to say it... In a sense you are right: background variety is a plus. (hey I wrote I was being picky on this). But, on the other hand, I do give a fuck if the environment is coherent or not, sorry. I think some of Silent Hill or Resident Evil charm is that they are usually set in some very defined locations: an haunted mansion, a hospital, a prison etc.

It's not that I dislike background variety, it's just that at many points, the game almost had a fantasy flavor (in the castle, in the cavern of flying monsters) and those locations don't mix that well together. and about backtracking: a coherent set of locations doesn't necessarily means backtracking (see MGS3).

""but its not like resident evil" if it was, i wouldnt be playing it, and most people wouldnt either.
i played resident evil 2 and enjoyed it somewhat, then i played 3 and foundout its the same garbage everytime and stopped, same with code veronica.

[...]

Same here, man. I stopped playing Resident Evil with no° 2. So you see, I got bored even quickier than you.

I did not expect classic Resident Evil: otherwise I would have never bought that. As you put it, they were tedious and boring. Heck, I managed to skip bot Remake and Zero, despite the chronical lack of good NGC software.

Actually, I wished for the most radical changes, and for the most part, I'm pretty satisfied with the result. This one has great controls and unmatched gameplay. However, I don't understand why they wanted to make it so similar to metal gear.

The first time Ashely was taken away from an enemy and the words "mission Failed" appeared, I was O_o. This is no survival. You are this time a special agent (snake) you have a mission, you can fail it without dying (at least Hunningan doesn't scream Leon! Leon! when you die). The ending, with the escape from the island on a waterbike, is just like MGS ending.

I don't think all of this was necessary. The cultist, the ancient Plagas, it's all pretty far from RE. RE4 could have been a blast anyway, if they just made it in the Umbrella laboratory with intelligent zombies (ganados). They did not need the "Monks", it is not the new setting that makes RE4 great, is the new gameplay.

I see this time Capcom focused on a good gameplay and great controls and graphics. I hope next time they keep this engine, and do something more coherent. Like Raccon City-like environments and such.

I think RE4 is awesome, but there were things that I wish were "fixed". There weren't enough puzzles to break up the action, Leon talks too much like an idiot, there should be one more boss, and the "rat maze effect". The "rat maze effect" is when some of the levels end up feeling like rat mazes because the developers didn't put the same amount of effort throuought the game. Most of the later "maps" can't compare with the village at all ('cept the lab part).

Otherwise, everything is excellent. I particularly liked the story. There is none of that endless banter like in MGS games. Everything is to the point, and there is even interactivity in them, so how a cutscenes plays out depends on the player. Finally. it feels like a RE story, which is a big plus since I am a fanboy of the series.
"Sooo, what was it that you consider a 'good salary' for a man to make?"
"They should at least make 100K to have a good life"

Agreed. :D Now go try the game again and see if the controls feel a little bit better than "a mess." :P
