My main gripe is that it's on a handheld... the worst platform for action/shooting games. Put it on the PC, give it some power, make it look nice. If people want to spend their time on that, it's cool. I'm not meaning to shit on the developer, but I think some things are just doomed from the beginning.

Why would anyone bother to play it on pc? Just download a saturn emulator if you want to play RS on it so badlyGaijinPunch wrote:My main gripe is that it's on a handheld... the worst platform for action/shooting games. What I'm trying to say is, there's hardly any shmups available on the DS at all (with the exception of Nanostray and some GBA titles). So as a programmer, I'd rather put my efforts into making a shmup for the DS platform if this wasn't too much trouble. Even a shitty DS game would be welcomed by some, since there's hardly any available. A shitty PC game, no-one will give a rats ass about.
But yeah I agree it looks pretty crap right now, and handhelds aren't the best medium for games like this.

if you read the guy's thread, he's basically ripping off the silvergun motif because his own sprite-drawing ability sucks. and at a later date he might swap it (not too much work) to his own stuff. so he's only messing about and tryin' to improve his programming abilities.

Because heaven knows the world needs more shitty games on the wrong platforms?Shion wrote:So as a programmer, I'd rather put my efforts into making a shmup for the DS platform if this wasn't too much trouble. Even a shitty DS game would be welcomed by some,
If anybody has programming talent they should probably make good games. On the other hand, I guess nothing works for the resume like throwing out a game on a new-ish platform with somebody else's famous game title on it

B/c it would (presumably) be better as a doujin game... maybe a pseudo sequel or something.Shion wrote: Why would anyone bother to play it on pc? Just download a saturn emulator if you want to play RS on it so badlyOr just play one of the much better doujins out there.

no. there is no problem with that (!?). and no, i don't need a perfect port to a system i don't own (!?), just pointing out that he hadn't yet programmed in the chaining values or designed patterns around it (yet). for what it's worth i own the saturn version and the st-v arcade board

DDP 2 didn't suffer from looks. A great game if it wasn't grandfathered in.Udderdude wrote:It looks worse than the abomination that was DDP 2A homebrew version of Radiant Silvergun for the Nintendo DS.
This game looks horrid. It looks weak even for GBA. I think if you stacked two Gameboy Color screens you could run something that bad.

But will you? In all seriousness, the more people making them the better off the genre will be. I look forward to your game.shoe-sama wrote:i could make a better shmup without trying lol

Hi just thought I would pop in seeings as you all seem to be finding my development quite a discussion piece.
Just to clarify a few things here, the video you see was filmed on a desktop pc running the game on an emulator therefore its dropping frames like nobodies business. This accounts for some of the frameskip and jerkyness that you see in the video, the real mc'coy is alot smoother than that. The clarity of the screenshots is far beyond what you will actually see on the DS once you have scanlines on top of it.
The background graphics are by no means final (especially the clouds) they are just something slapped in there to test the engine, this will all be polished off towards the end of development though I thought most of you would have known that to be honest.
This is just an alpha video that I released for the people on my website that were interested to see how the game was progressing so (due to me rebuilding the engine) I used an old version of the game just to show the type of thing that is in place.
The enemy AI is absolute crap and I don't mind saying it or hearing it. Again for those that have absolutely no idea of how this kind of game is made, AI can be added to and tweaked at any time. The AI in place in this video is there literally so the enemies dont clash and fly through walls.
Someone said that there wasn't any chaining in the game, well if you look a bit harder at the video you will see that there is infact chaining built into the game and as I have said in my release thread on ds-scene, the chaining will need to be tweaked as it currently only works by coloured enemies and I am sure that there are some other methods of chaining in RSG. (any help on this subject would be appreciated naturally)
For all you moaners out there, a couple of points:
1. You havn't played the game so how can you say whether it is good or not, please reserve judgement until the game is complete
2. You don't like my level designs? Not a problem, I am implementing a system into the new engine that will allow you to build your own levels so then you can show us all your uber skills at making better levels than are already there.
3. The engine is in EXTREMELY early development. If you think that you wont be playing this until Christmas then I would say you probably are not far wrong although I hope to release at least a single playable level by that time
For all the supporters:
Thanks for your kind words it is appreciated and I will try my best to make this as close to the original gameplay as possible. I'm not really going for a remake of RSG as you can tell, this is more of a spinoff / sequal / prequal, I havn't really decided on any story line at all yet.
If you are interested in getting involved then be sure to send me a pm either here or on ds-scene and I'll try to get you working on something. I am glad you are all talking about it because feedback good or bad is better than no feedback at all.

Welcome retrohead. I've had my share of shitting on your progress a tiny bit but it's good to see you take the more worthwhile criticisms well.
Anyway as I mentioned before, from the title alone everyone is expecting something incredible, so it might not have been a good idea to call it that especially if you are not cloning the mechanics exactly, or unless you are very confident that you will be able to match the calibre of your inspiration. But hey, good luck anyway. I'll be sure to give v2.0 a try :)
