First of all, this is one kickass banner. :)

This is a great idea, you have there. Although this time Progear would probably win the poll, but it makes for a great theme, which can return every year.

Also some other recommendations are very good so far. To add something new maybe a "Caravan Week". Games with Caravan-gameplay like Super Spacefortress Macross 2 could count too.

About the Doujin games, here is postman's reply:
postman wrote: Hey edge -

Here's what I can come up with, based on full version, low specs, and scoring systems:

1) Anything by x.x
http://www004.upp.so-net.ne.jp/x_xgamer ... works.html

High scores and the ability to change difficulty levels. Could cater to both newbs and vets.

2) Chain
http://www.h4.dion.ne.jp/%7Eoresiki/program/chain.html

No joystick support, but the score system is different - you need to riccochet bullets into enemies to chain.

3) Cho Ren Sha
http://www2.tky.3web.ne.jp/%7Eyosshin/m ... nload.html

It's been played to death, but it's still a classic, and makes for a good score compo.

4) Dan Da Dan!
http://nagoya.cool.ne.jp/o_mega/product/ddd.html

5) Every Extend
http://www.vector.co.jp/soft/win95/game/se327077.html

Not really a true shmup, but would be great in a compo.

6) Intercept
http://www.perfectrun.net/download.html

Plays like warning forever, see who can get the furthest

7) Kanonpachi
http://www5f.biglobe.ne.jp/%7Eyakimorok ... nload.html

Very basic, but good. Can be used to reinforce the basics of shmupping.

Sailen
http://hotmale.hp.infoseek.co.jp/sailen/index.html

Has a graze bonus for scoring purposes.

9) Solid State Survivor
http://www.geocities.jp/sp1_ssr/s3.htm

Has a good chaining system

10) Zen-Ichi - great high scoring game, only you'd have to use the demo on this one........the full version is commercial ;(

Let me know if those work for you........

Postman
Still I say we are on the safer side ignoring the doujins. But they would surely add to the variety of games.

Hidden Gem Week needs to be a reoccuring theme. Caravan Week might be good, but damn it would be a frustating week to play the same two (or five) minutes over and over and over and over and over again.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I agree there, I personally don't like Caravan challenges that much myself. But I thought I'd point it out anyway. It had been suggested last year somewhere I think... or maybe not I can't remember.

The worries about the doujin games are not only if the games are balanced enough. Also if most people can play these games. With all the different machines and OSs people use here. Wide accessibility is very important for a tournament with "random" game choices like the STGT.

as far i know, Cho Ren Sha (and some otheres i think, like x.x) works without any problem under Wine on linux pc.

maybe we need pull like "what OS you use?' to deside?

Yeah most of the scoring systems in these things are pretty jacked up.

I wouldn't mind beating up people with like 50M+ scores in Warning Forever or something though.

Oh, before somebody forgets to mention the obvious:

Cave Week

This week should be present in all STGTs by default though. ;)

I second Cave week, but only games that are satisfactorily emulated (Dangun, Dodonpachi, ESPRade et al). Though I'd love to see DOJ, Galuda and Mushi on the list, the fact is not everyone can easily get hold of them.

Progear could be a problem because as far as i'm aware, it isn't emulated terribly well.

Since Doujin STGs are so integral to the modern scene, I can't see Doujin week as being anything less than essential.

Toaplan week would be fun.

Of course, we need to honour the greats as well. Doom week?

Having scanned the above^.

Cave week has to come in...to please most people.

Hidden Gem week.

PlasmaBlood's choices were interesting;
Seibu Week - ok for The Old Mills.
Konami Week - yes. Finland will destroy but that's ok.
Toaplan Week - Preferably not one where the credit will last days.
Kaneko Week

Raizing Week

I don't mind a Giga Wing Week, even if its a Rob gift week.

Horizontal week.

I don't think Rob was being serious about that.

I would love a Compile week, but their score systems are basically "How many lives did you have when you finished the game?"

I'd go for (between parenthesis are just examples, not necessarily what should be in the poll

80's week (Juno First, Beamrider, Xevious and Star Force (haha) )
Cute'em Up week ( Cotton, Gokujyou Parodius, Twinbee Yahho, Coryoon)
Last year 2nd places week
Hidden Gem week (Omega Fighter, Gemini Wing, Super Spacefortress Macross II, Space Manbow)
Airplanes week (Strikers 1945 II, P-47 Aces, 19xx, Battle Garegga (HAHA) )

This would be cool because it's not developer centric. Though for the rage of some people, I don't think I listed one single cave game on my examples (didn't think too hard on them anyway)

Ah ok i have found some other ones on google.

Real Retro Week with titles like Phoenix, Galaga, Space Invaders etc.

1 on 1 Shooting week with Change Air Blade (ok this is impossible to handle in the tournament, or do you have any idea to solve the problem...have i heard the evil word mame ? )

Slapstickshooter Week with titles like The Great Ragtime Show

Greetings

How about:

Gradius week
Gradius II week
Gradius III week
Gradius IV week
Gradius V week

I think I'm gonna have to pass this time. Signing ïn last year was a mistake, the games were just too crappy to force myself to play them, even for a competition. My teammates didn't show too much interest either, Team Skandinavia came last if I remember right?

I've been playing it on MAME for a bit now, and as far as I can tell it seems to work fine. Maybe you're thinking of something else? (It's not a personal favorite of mine anyways, but one could do a lot worse).
btw, how about "not mame" emulators?

+G-Darius; Xevious 3D/G;Ray Storm;Brave Blade...
That could be a possibility, though when I tried to get ZinC working I always had trouble with it for some reason...
Hidden Gem Week needs to be a reoccuring theme.
Add in a "Not Air Gallet Week" clause and I'm all for it. :P

I am everlastingly shocked you're on the Raiden III board. :P

Awww, dude.. No need to pass. Register & put yourself down for 1-2 weeks play. Ask for a new team. Jump in if Konami Week rolls around.

Edge, while I advise more time is needed to research all Doujin suggestions and work out a comp specs standard. If you instead decide to put Doujin Week down as the 4th week, that would buy you time to research Postman's new suggestions, then send the 5-6 games you like toward 'the committee' to playtest. We can leave STGT '06 2nd place Week in as an understudy replacement in-case the game selections fail to make the cut.

People who need to catch up on the old Doujin discussion can get it here:
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... &start=256

If '06 2nd Place Week is to be used, Take Progear out to keep selection at the usual 5 choices. Cave Week doesn't have a giant emulated selection, so every title should probably stay in a Cave Week so if that theme is to come back again and again, the voting selection can at least stay at 5 choices for at least a few more years. I wouldn't wanna play two Cave games in the 5 weeks anyway...

Post 1 will have a minor tally of what it appears people are suggesting most. I grouped similar requests as the same though. (Parodius/Gradius week = Konami Week , 80s Week = Retro, etc.) A small blueprint for week order has also been put out there. Of course, plenty of room to change things around. Just organizing the data for now.

For people who really can't wait to start, at VGEVO.com there is a Cho Ren Sha tourney going on right now that ends in a week or two. Prizes involved.
If you participate in that and can't get the game running, please do let us know about it.

Is that stupid "it must be playable in MAME" rule (even for $20 games) still in effect?

tviks - If it helps, I only bothered with the first two games last year (Blazing Star & A.P.Batrider), you can let your teammates specialize in the games you don't like & you'll still get a good team result.

may I suggest something? If this feels too much complicated, then never mind.

I think the voting could be done in 2 "phases". First we have the usual 5 selections. Then after some time, we get the 2 top placed games, and we have to vote only between them both (Unless of course, the top placed game get more votes than all the other games together)

This would let people vote in the "first phase" more freely.. it would stop the "tactical vote" where people vote for one game to avoid another game being the top-voted. The "tactival vote" would be the 2nd phase.

What you think?
