Philosoma is pretty much as epic as a shmup can get.

A borderliner can top it, though: Novastorm

If we're going to include borderliners/rail shooters, then I would say that Star Fox has its epic moments, espcecially the Asteroid Belt & Space Armada stages.

What!? Nobody mentioned Silpheed TLP? The game might not be the best but when you talk about epic storylines, this one sure has to be in the top ten. Nice cutscenes and kind of a dark atmosphere. I mean the world gets destroyed after the first level! Or was it the second?

Would be cool, but have you seen any of the concept art? I can understand them not wanting to put cutscenes in. Plus I think that never hearing or seeing shinra or the other characters adds to the oppressive atmoshere.
Good point. And yes, I've seen the art for the Ikaruga. It's fantastic if you ask me.
Don't get me wrong, I love the artwork, but I really think that putting the art in cutscenes wouldn't do it justice.

First post.

Thunder Force IV deserves some mention for feeling like it goes a few levels longer than a normal TF and being excellent all the while. Gradius V is the epic-est, though.

Feel > length when it comes to determining epic for me.

Raiden DX beats out Battle Garegga in this, even though RDX fucks with my head more.
so long and tanks for all the spacefish
unban shw
<Megalixir> now that i know garegga is faggot central i can disregard it entirely
