Don't quote me on it, but from my personal experience there seems to be some sort of "shared bell cycle". Let's say you juggled one bell to the point that it only needs a couple more shots to turn red. Now you hit another bell that's in a cloud two times - this one should turn red instead of the one you prepared beforehand. The bell you worked with earlier might not give any colour whatsoever now since this cycle is over. This is not always the case, but I observed that when I worked through one entire cycle (either with one bell or with several bells) the bells I worked with will most likely never change colour again.

That echoes my observations, looks like you really can't afford to miss a color when it shows up. And yes, the game does appear to have a "shared bell cycle" - Parodius games do too, and I recall seeing the same in other Twinbees such as Detana.

Does anybody know of any good sources for shmup sound effect rips? Or really, any old-ish 2d action sfx. I just need a few explosive fiery murder noises.

I need some temporary placeholders for the game dev update video I'll be finishing in the next few days.

Does a Superplay DVD for Pink Sweets exist? If not, what's the highest known replay available?

Not rips persay, but I have the OST for Tatsujin Oh and the last track is sound effects, and, unlike some other OSTs, it doesn't have BGM behind them. So those would be usable. If you can't find a pre-packaged solution you could cut up what you needed in Audacity or whatever.

No superplay DVD exists. Icarus' 13mill replay is still the highest one out there: https://youtu.be/5OVPeHzJJX8

it was called Gondomania

hello, I have been trying to remember a game from my childhood. I am going on some old, vague memories, but hopefully someone will remember the name of this game.
things I remember:

top-down, vertical shooter
2 player I think
multi-directional shooter
possibly twin stick, but not too sure. I seem to remember the arcade stick was 'different' not a ball-top
your vehicle was an air bike, or air chariot. these would hover or fly (no wheels)
instead of the vehicle shooting i think the guy riding on the bike threw projectiles
it was kind of organic, not sci-fi or futuristic
there were some beast-looking bosses you had to fight at the end of the stages
I'm pretty sure this was from the late 80s or early 90s
this is all I can remember :(

Who is considered the main character of Giga Wing 2 overall? Kart or Limi?

I guess it's Kart but all ohers are worth it, unlike in Giga Wing 1 where Sinnosuke is a useless wreck.
I mean it gameplaywise. Don't give a shit about the story.

Spoiler
I always thought it was Limi because she's the one that ends up getting captured and her safety depends on your choice at the end.

Shmups are not an ideal story medium. If you're playing them for the story, you're playing them wrong. That said, the way Giga Wing did it (and included 2 player dialogue/endings for each team) was a nice, unobtrusive way if doing it.
P.S. - everyone dies in Giga Wing's bad endings and everyone dies in Giga Wing's good endings.

ohnoes I did that backwards

I could have sworn some of the characters live in the good ending

IMO one of the best examples of how stories can enhance a shmup is X-Multiply.

Without the context of the game taking place in a human body, the aesthetic would still be ghoulish, but would lack much of the same punch if it was assumed to be some alien planet.

You can express it in one sentence, but the premise takes an already morbid game and makes it completely unsettling. The music, the artwork, everything gets a massively grim shot in the arm from that creative little detail.

I always liked how after the character dies enough times, the craft just sits on-screen for a second before exploding. It lends death a nice sense of finality.

Turns out I just didn't realize that red and green bells stop spawning when you have either of those colors (shield/options). In general, you stop getting bells of a certain color when that upgrade is no longer applicable, e.g. white bells when you already have the twin shot. This is also the case in Detana TwinBee but I apparently never realized it worked that way with red and green bells since I would always go for green and purple and ignore red. They changed this in TwinBee Yahhoo so all colors still spawn and collecting redundant powerups give 57300 points (of course it's 57300, this is a Konami game we're talking about) or double that in special mode, which is actually worth more than yellow bells. This also means you can switch from options to shield, which as far as I can tell you can't do in TwinBee or Detana TwinBee except by dying.

Indeed. It is possible to get both if you happen to have a red and a green bell active at the same time, but once you picked one of them up you can't activate the other anymore (unless it's a shield and you lose it, of course).

You can have options and shield active in Detana!!, just not both shields at the same time. It does work in the PCE port, though.

I was going to say "well yeah, I guess they die eventually."

I think most players' head canon is that the pilots die by anal annihilation courtesy the stage 5 boss. Or at least, that is how just about all of my playthroughs of Giga Wing 2 play out.

Does the score multiplier apply to destroying bosses in DBCS?
If so, would you get a higher score by finishing bosses off with a Burst Counter?
