I think I understand, yeah. Aside from those particular tricks, I'm not sure of what to change in my playing (or if I even can change anything) to offset the power up conveyor belt. And yeah, that was me.

Yeah you can't really change your play to get more full power-ups. The best thing you can do is kill the boat on stage 3, but that only offsets the conveyor belt by 1 and it makes stage 3 a bit harder. I just wanted to explain that it's not random :)

Replayburners has some two player superplays I think.

I assume you mean actually two players rather than a doubleplay. In that case, here's one of Battle Garegga's Extended mode (2-loop).

How accurate to the originals are the ports in the Parodius Portable collection on PSP? I'm interested because the ports don't have some issues present in MAME's emulations, such as background layer being missing in the last stage of Sexy Parodius, but I'm not sure how the gameplay compares or if there are other issues. Parodius Da seems to have much less slowdown in the PSP version compared to MAME but I have no idea about the others.

The PSP port of Da! is significantly easier than the arcade game just like every other home version (I don't recall offhand if it has the same weird scoring irregularities as the 32-bit ports, but I'd imagine they based the PSP version on that) and, as you pointed out, runs much smoother, Gokujou and Sexy are just like the arcade games, however (once you change the rank to the appropriate level). J. O. Parodius is based on the superior 32-bit versions (instead of the SFC original) and a tremendous joy to play as always, and there's also an enhanced version of the original MSX game which is still awkward as all hell, but nonetheless the best version available.

Thanks again, Perikles! I haven't had the chance to verify myself but I found a post from Icarus confirming that the bell values are inflated in PSP Parodius Da! just like the Saturn and PSX ports.

What's the most effective ship to clear Batrider? I played on Team Edit mode.

Shorty, type B (select the character with the B button). Play Character Select mode, it's much easier than Team Edit.

Solo character is the way to go if you're not trying to trigger all the secret bosses, since you don't have to learn three characters at once. I second Shorty-B; her missiles (which are enhanced by choosing B type) tear through everything which is a godsend in the later stages. Shorty-C has a stronger shot but is too slow to be much good and you don't need a strong shot when you've got Shorty's missiles. Strawman (A or C type, C being slower but with stronger options) is also a fine choice if Shorty is too slow for you.

Thanks for the info!

Shorty B doesn't fit well for me, and C option is just game breaker.

C's options are the same as B's, it's just the main shot that's stronger (C has the same shot as A, while B has a weaker shot). As a tradeoff C is slower than B. Either way Shorty's options are the majority of her damage.

It works like this:

A = Strong shot, weak options
B = Weak shot, strong options
C = Both strong, slow speed
Start = Both weak, fast speed

"Strong" vs. "Weak" here refers to the starting and maximum power levels. Strong shot/option starts one power level higher than weak and can be upgraded one level higher (same total number of power levels).

It's probably too early to start a C90 threat just yet, but can anyone say why a game might me unsuccessful (落選) in its application? Apparently Imalice won't be shown again until November's DigiGameExpo (デジゲー博2016) as a consequence.

Also, if I enabling autofire, does it increase the rank like Garegga?

Increasing the fire rate makes you fire more shots and each shot increases rank as usual, but besides that it doesn't have any effect on rank. Nothing like the dramatic and permanent per-frame rank increase in Garegga. Feel free to increase or decrease the fire rate as you wish.

If you didn't know already, you can change your fire rate at will by pressing Start+A to increase it and Start+C to decrease it. You can even increase it to 60Hz autofire which you can't do with external autofire, so no need for an autofire controller or fast tapping in Batrider (though that will still work like it does in Garegga). The fire rate is displayed to the left of the mode name (training/normal/advance/special). Different character subtypes have different default firerates; C has the highest, which is likely why it feels so powerful to you.

Is there a "hall of records" for console shmups on this site (or elsewhere)?

I like seeing the arcade one here, but I'm interested to see how far some of the console games have been pushed by the best players in Japan.

Is that mini-game present in the Shooting love Trizeal disc for the PS2 the same as that "Shmups Skill Test" that came out on other releases such as the 360's Shooting Love 200X?

If that's the case, how am I supposed to play the damn thing?
Is there a guide somewhere?

With Bananamatic's recent counterstop it got me thinking. Is there any player out there who can consistently clear futari ultra?

should be possible if you don't play for score (and maybe even if you do)
though there was some wasshoi commentary from a player saying that futari ultra is too hard to demo live, which is why he went for deathsmiles instead

Interesting. Do you know what's the most lives anyone has ever finished ultra with?

if you play it safely you'll get to larsa with maybe 5 lives and 2 bombs, at which point a normal larsa fight is a 5 miss
if you die you get there with 4 lives and 4-5 bombs, then you can 4 miss her
never seen anyone finish with a spare life

Does anyone know what Raiden song this is that they are playing? I can't figure it out, so maybe it's not from Raiden at all.

The games aren't bad, I'm just not a fan of the pacing and bullet style. It doesn't give me the zen-like flow that I get from games which are a little slower but more crowded.

I'm liking your enjoyed games list. Especially the game I bolded

Now on to my recommendations:

Jamestown: Legend of the Lost Colony
Mars Matrix
Ketsui
Seihou 3 ~ Banshiryuu
Wing Force
Suwako-chan Cubic
Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo

Note: both Ketsui and Mars Matrix are pretty tough and might cause much anguish if you're new to STGs.

Ketsui is really good, thanks. I'd heard of it before but never got around to it until now. Will check out the other ones later.

Incidentally and unrelated - does anyone have any general tips to avoid getting pushed up the sides and trapped while streaming bullets? I have this issue some times where I'm streaming and just run out of room and the stream doesn't stop so I either have to try and cross it or bomb. Some times I reeeeeaaaally don't want to cross it and go the other way... it's really stressful to attempt, but some times I can do it and not have a heart attack.

I just tried Ketsui and it's tough but not too bad. Made me surprise myself at what I'm able to dodge without even knowing how I did it though.
