Everything since has been shovelware or remakes.
Don't remind me... there is also that one weird last GB game that is comically expensive now, but I don't know too much about it. I still have not played Adventure ReBirth yet. Too lazy to go illegally download it and put it on my Wii, and too forgetful to remember to do so. Eventually I'll remember. Gotta remember where my Wii is, too, but that's a different problem...

I played it the other day and I think the spacing on it is quite unfortunate, as it makes it extremely difficult to not read it as DRACULAX. I cannot unsee it and lolz ensue every time.

Calling it. Sonia Belmont will be the main character of Belmont's Curse. She has to be.

Since when, and why? I bought my cart-only copy just a few years ago, and I'm sure I haven't paid more than just a few Euros. I can't even imagine why this should be sought-after. It's not a very attractive game and it plays only okay-ish. If any of the GB Castlevanias should be in high demand, the second one would make much more sense.

the re-haunting of the wave castle

Post by NYN »

If remembered right, a M2 guy said once that they would release their re-imagined games based on original ones as a single drop. Only that the K0NAMI leadership demands to pack them in collections, so nerdy types have to buy the whole package. Affirmative, on my end. I only bought the Dominus Collection on game card for the Re-haunted Castle. No complains, it's finally fun while being different enough to not call it a Vania. Looks and sounds gorg. Dark-haired Simon with the steel-muscle gait is arousing. I have no interest to play the DS ports on a Switch Lite, while having the originals available to me. 2 screens on 1 screen feels definitely off. Plus I'm not that keen on the hybrids, whatever qualities they do possess. So, yes, duh, it all worked out, huh.

I only played through a single credit-feeding playthrough of the Haunted Castle remake, and I'm kind of surprised by it. I feel like it could be an engaging game to get into, and I don't understand the claim that it's too easy. I died *plenty*, and I'm usually pretty good at these games. It's for sure harder than many other classicvania titles - at least on the hard difficulty.

It does feel kind of trashy and memo-heavy in a lot of places though. Like, not really a good game at all, but it's probably one I could still like with some experience put into it.

After clearing Hard wood with continues once, on my next run without I got Game Over with Dorakyura on the last health point. I laughed. Having played the original Haunted Castle a "bit" (never cleared), maybe I got the rhythm faster. Rising spirits from slain skeletons are still a wacky concept. The only part I find now inconsequential is that a pit should be allowed to be bottomless, not transfer back to the last standing. That's childish, and a compromise for those who cannot cope the hardcore concept.

Granted, it's odd enough to compare to others, however I will not knock the only thrown bone we get in the bright light of coming events. I will praise it instead. Remake or not, it feels warranted.

Well, my general takeaway *was* indeed that I wasn't expecting much from it based on what people had said about it, and I was very positively surprised by what it was.

When I say it's not a great game, it's mostly just that it's the kind of game that takes a bit of an acquired taste, and that's still much better than one that's just flaccid and boring.

I don't keep up too closely with the lore, but do I vaguely recall that the game she appeared in was declared officially non-canon at some point, or is my memory playing tricks on me?

Yes. She and Legends were declared non-canon for sometime now. But to have her reappear in canon...

If you want Castlevania on Sega 8-bit, try Master of Darkness (92/93). At least the Switch port has burst the bubble on the D$ originals

Master of Darkness has some pretty questionable design choices too, like being able to downgrade your primary weapon to something nearly useless, heh.

It's as if the creators had watched a video playthrough of Castlevania and just superficially recreated what they had seen, without ever playing the game itself, let alone understanding what makes it play well.

Still, Master System owners weren't exactly spoiled with great action platformers, so you could argue they could do a lot worse than MoD.

Haunted Castle Revisited is kind of neat. Not top-tier, but from m the couple of games I got this weekend, certainly above average.

The sinking sanctuary's visuals and music from Bloodlines still give me chills. Very strong showing for the Genesis sound system. I love Bloodlines, but I cant with a straight face and good conscience say that Bloodlines is better than SCV4, but I very much do get the criticisms. SCV4 was my second or third game purchase for my SNES back in '91/92. I have fond memories of it, especially the sound, whip mechanics, being able to jump onto stairs, and the general controls. The atmosphere and ambience in general is one of the best in the series. All that said, it does have a very different feel from CV 1,2, & 3 ...but then again, so does Bloodlines. I do recall that even back as a kid I thought it was good, but was never my favorite SNES title either. I may get crucified for saying this, but at the time I had to choose between SCV4 and Super Ghouls N Ghosts, money was limited-- I chose SVC4 but several months later I regretted my choice, and looking back I now understand why. Even to this day, I feel the "replayability" of SGNG is far greater than SCV4, and I find it to be much more challenging (and thus, rewarding), yet not a frustratingly cheap challenge. To me, its the near perfect challenge, which gives it its high replayability rating from me. Over the years I have played SGNG WAY more than SCV4 because of this.

Bloodlines has a very..."arcadey" feel to it--which is not a bad thing but its also different from the NES Castlevanias. Its an extremely good title, and along with GNG, one of the best action titles on the Genesis. Its also VERY hard though, on equal ground with the Ghouls N Ghosts on Genesis and SNES, IMO. I do think that, in general, players of today going back to experience both of these classics for the first time would probably appreciate the audio/visual masterpiece that is SCV4 over Bloodlines, as it is just more of an "immersive experience" (if that makes sense), and the challenge is much more manageable compared to Bloodlines.

In closing, however, I think it must be said that the undisputed GOAT of the series, which gets absolutely everything right, has to be Castlevania 3. Its got the graphics, the soundtrack, the perfect CV feel, multiple and very different characters, near perfect difficulty, and multiple different routes to Dracula. In my eyes, CV3 will never be topped as far as what truly embodies Castlevania.
I made the above comment a few days ago on a YT video that questioned IV vs Bloodllines. I have to clarify my comments by saying its probably been around 20-25 years since I did a proper playthrough of IV, so I picked it back up over the weekend. Wow the memories it brought back! In hindsight I think I was a bit harsh in my criticisms of IV above, even though I did still give it its props where it excels. It is by no means a bad, or even just a "good" Castlevania game. It is a GREAT game, lets get that out of the way real quick. Playing in a controlled light environment on my 36" FD Trinitron Wega from my RGB modded SNES Jr., it was, just like it was back in '91/'92, a near religious audio/visual experience. Even though I did mention the ambiance/atmosphere in my recollection above, playing it proper after so long hit me hard in the feels. I know some of it was pure bliss of nostalgia, but man, its hard to speak highly enough of the graphics and sound, especially for its time. The intro alone, with the eerie music playing as the fog starts creeping in at Draculas grave, I think is still the most legendary intro of all the 8/16/32bit Castlevanias (though 3's is a close second).

Its funny how memories of the contemporary time of your life can get locked away in these games and you dont realize which ones until you go back and play them again. I distinctly remember losing my paternal grandmother at the time I was playing this back when it first came out, and it wasnt until I hit a certain level that the memory came rushing back to me, like the day I found out. Deep man. Im 47 today, I was 12 when I first unwrapped this gem and fired it up on my SNES. I think it was the second or third game I got for the system (dont recall if I got it or Actraiser first, but Actraiser was a Christmas gift, this I bought with allowance money I think).

Super Castlevania IV is truly a work of 16 bit art, and its graphics and sound stand up well to the test of time. Its like a tech demo for all of the incredible things the SNES could do that werent possible on other 8 and 16 bit systems. This go round I played the "Fast ROM" version of it, which elminates probably a good 90% or so of the massive slowdown that plagued the original. It really does make the game feel more coherent. Despite having the most controllable main character of all time, I have to agree that the fighting still felt somewhat "clunky", and during boss fights especially, it seemed that you really just had to give out damage faster than you took it to edge them out, rather than just being able to skillfully duck and dodge to avoid damage. Maybe thats just my rusty reflexes talking, I dont know.

In any case, as much as I like Bloodlines ( and I truly do), I cant sit here with a straight face and claim that Bloodlines is better than SCIV, I'd just be lying to myself. Replayability wise, as I mentioned with SGNG, yes, perhaps Bloodlines wins out because its one of those true challenges that pushes you to get better and excel, and that for me tends to drive replayability. In any case, I had a blast going back to the past and playing it. Just wanted to share my thoughts.

What timing! I was just playing the PS1 version of the X68000 game yesterday (turns out I still suck at this game and need to play it more) to test out the makeshift chair I devised so I can use my CRT relatively comfortably while still leaving it on the floor because I still sadly have yet to find modern furniture that won't get flattened by its weight.

Unfortunately, only the center appears correctly focused, overscan cuts off the top third of the HUD, and the scrolling looks weird, like the outer edges of the screen look curved (???) somehow when the screen scrolls. I hate these aspects of playing on a CRT so much and I wish I knew how to fix it.

Anyway, all this did was reaffirm how awesome even the weird PS1 version of the X68000 game is. The actual X68000 game deserves a rerelease so much because it's the best game in the series and its absence is extremely saddening.

"Belmont's Daughter's Curse" is set for a release in October, except for Switch at a later date same year. For an aesthetic impression in a franco comic style . I vote Medusa not ugly, just offensive. At least on par with classic mythology, if not Vania. Card art underwhelming. Latest trailer aroused me only for the organ playing. Tacky voice over indeed. Sigh when a Belmont could put a thread out, as in "kill you AND the night!!".

A bit disappointed that the new protagonist of Castlevania isn't Sonia Belmont after all, but I'm curious as to what Rose will bring to the franchise.

I can't stand the PS1 version of X68K Drac. Real X68Ks run at 55htz, and the PS1 port was lazily sped up to 60htz. This makes the game a lot harder than it was meant to be. She-Wolf and a lot of the stage traps are fun solid challenges on the real deal, but are frustrating messes on PS1. You are much better off emulating than playing on PS1 these days. By the way, technically the X68K game did get an official rerelease last year for the Zuiki X68000Z series...

Yeah, I know it's kind of messed up, but at least you could consider it a harder arrange mode in case you find the real version too easy because you played it too much lol.

I still want to get an X68000 eventually. Just gotta get a bigger house first...

Looks pretty awesome? I didnt know this was coming-- is it going to be a Metroidvania style or just a straight action title? Seems to be an official and very late Konami response to Bloodstained to me. What do you mean by saying Medusa is not ugly, just offensive? I'd say the opposite Medusa is ugly, not offensive, lol.

Speaking of Bloodstained, seems the "Scarlet Engagement", sequel to "Ritual of the Night" is releasing this year. Although the blog post is nearly a year old with no updates since, that is. They sure took their sweet time (7 years and counting) to get a sequel out (maybe?), it must be a really leisurely pace over at Iga's 505 games. In any case, I really enjoyed Bloodstained, and I am quite looking forward to Scarlet Engagement. Oddly, I can recall very little of Bloodstained, especially the music, compared to the old Castlevanias of my youth. Same with Metroid Dread. Maybe thats solely due to playing through each one only once and not my age, I dont know.

Gevalt! I know this game cannot be for me, but that Medusa design is just not acceptable on any scale. Looks to me like a discarded Merwoman scratch with snakes tacked to it, not something in a final game. Of course, I predict the Web to crack wiiide open, rise up to demand a new one that at the very least is passable. What else is it good for? See Carmilla in that row? Not what I'd call fresh, merely passable.

Agree, ironically it somewhat reminds me of the first sea-creature boss in Bloodstained. As far as aesthetics, I wouldnt worry as much about them as I would how fun and balanced the game itself is, at least when it comes to bothering the developers about it. Camilla is OK, at least she looks feminine. I can make exceptions but in general I do prefer when male characters look masculine and female characters look feminine. They dont all need to be He-man and She-Ra, but Im sorry, Rose Belmont looks like a dude, lol. They should have just called him Bill or Steve Belmont.
