Yes, GoT does suffer a bit from the usual net overhype, but what coveted niche game doesn't? The game is still a 4 star experience for me to this day as when I booted up my Duo for the first time.
Level 4 and Dark City are my votes for best tracks.
Man, if I could go back in time to May 1994 (when I got my Duo) and tell my younger self about Turbo and Genny games on a Nintendo console. Crazy....

Since Hudson Soft put Gate up there, I'll be damn surprised if Sega doesn't respond with Thunder Force IV/Lightning Force.SAM wrote:There is not a real shmups for Genesis on VC yet...How can they ignore the most famous Genesis game (famous for some reasons), Zero Wing. Nintendo really need to get those Tecno Soft & Toaplan shmups titles on VC.

I tends to think the problem is Sega does not make any real shmups themself (except Fanasy Zone), I thank the Thunder Force series is owned by Tecno Soft and they aren't into the VC business yet. (The same to the Toaplan's Titles...)Asherdude wrote:Since Hudson Soft put Gate up there, I'll be damn surprised if Sega doesn't respond with Thunder Force IV/Lightning Force.
Genesis shmups from companies already into VC business are as follow:
Namcot/Namco
Burning Force
Dangerous Seed
Phelios
Whip Rush
Taito
Fire Mustang
Insector X
Master of Weapons
Sagaia (Darius 2)
Super Space Invaders
Task Force Harrier EX
Konami
Contra HC
So only Darius 2 and Contra HC worth downloading....

Of course it did! MUSHA is the localized US name. The JP version is called Musha Aleste: Fullmetal Elinor, or something along those lines. JP imports look a bit different from US Genesis games and need a game genie, pass through adapter, or removal of tabs to fit.professor ganson wrote:Didn't MUSHA have a domestic release? I have a copy that plays perfectly on my US Genesis.Arvandor wrote:Since they've started throwing imports on the VC, I'm hoping for MUSHA ^_^
Why is Whip Rush under Namco? I thought it was designed by SEGA. MobyGames listes Vic Tokai as the developer, though. Didn't SEGA make Arrow Flash? SEGA also made Borderline (I think that's the name) for the arcade and Transbot for the SMS.SAM wrote: I tends to think the problem is Sega does not make any real shmups themself

The Genesis/Mega Drive Space Invaders was called Space Invaders '90 in Japan and Space Invaders '91 in US. It's a different, but similar game to Super Space Invaders '91/Majestic Twelve for the arcades.Super Space Invaders
Fire Mustang was published by Taito, but developed by NMK. Task Force Harrier EX is not Taito. The arcade game was released by UPL. The MD/Genesis version was published in both US and Japan by a company named Treco. Insector X is an odd one. The arcade game was made by Taito, but the port, which has drastically different graphics from the arcade, was done by Hot-B.SAM wrote: Taito

Of note, MUSHA is a Compile game -- so there for it is long, and "easy" -- Let me be saying that I am able to 1 credit clear this gameArvandor wrote:Oh... Well... I hope they just release domestic MUSHA on the VC then =P Either way, it'd be cheaper and easier (as MUSHA is pretty hard to find), and I wouldn't have to worry about needing to hook up the ol' Genny.

I thought that was well known around here? The long and easy Compile thing has been driven into the ground. The majority of their games are a blast to play despite how easy they are and there are a few of them that aren't long or easy.Sonic R wrote:Of note, MUSHA is a Compile game -- so there for it is long, and "easy" -- Let me be saying that I am able to 1 credit clear this gameArvandor wrote:Oh... Many folks here however are not like them and prefer offerings from Cave and the like. Overall I prefer shoot them up from 8-bit(NES & SMS) and 16-bit days. Old school shooting games get negitive here because they are not contain the scoring mechanics that make up modern games. Fans of Cave and other score em ups seem to have hard time enjoying console shooting games of old and deem them easy, boring, and broken. Sorry that games like MUSHA, Blazing Lazers, and Gate of Thunder are not good game. I love these game and am perfectly fine with these and could care less to play any Cave game ever again.
I like Compile quite a bit too, though not just for their shmups. I was confused because you complained about Compile games being long and easy. It isn't untrue for many of their games, but the post mislead me into thinking it was the usual Compile rant.Sonic R wrote:

Why is this being explained? I understand this full well. I don't agree with the sentiment about older games, especially since there are plenty of well designed old school games out there. I don't feel a scoring system is necessary to play for score. I like older games quite a bit, but I don't feel they are better or worse than newer ones. It depends on the game.Old school shooting games get negitive here because they are not contain the scoring mechanics that make up modern games. I can't comment much on Cave since I haven't played many of their games, but I like Toaplan games quite a bit and I plan to at least get a version of Dodonpachi. The ports of Dondonpachi DOJ and Espgaluda for JPS2 sound very slick too.

It's funny, older games let you play for score if you wanted to. Look at mario and sonic for example.
When I play a 16 bit era game I just play for mastery first then score. Once I find out how not to die I start seeing how many enemies I can pick off.

Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/829/829573p1.html Looks like a Compile game made it to the VC. Not a shmup, though. Lunar Pool.
So... Now that I've downloaded Gate of Thunder, I'd like to have some fun with its highly praised music. However, how am I supposed to do that when the sound effects are too damn loud? It doesn't look like I can turn them down. Am I missing something here?
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Oh yeah, forgot to put the link up. Usually on Monday mornings, Nintendo's press site updates with info about which games are coming out. Usually, a few hours in advance.
