You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

The game wasn't originally made with twin-stick controls in mind, so there's no reason to feel obligated to switch, just use whichever you like better.kayakoyaka wrote:My question is if I should get used to the dual stick control? I am much more comfortable with the regular control setup for now...

I can see the similarities, but the curse system is more interesting than the drone system. Granted this is a shmup newbie's pov so forgive meStevens wrote:Dems fightin' words:Dkayakoyaka wrote:I like it better than Under Defeat.

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Thanks, I figured as much. But some of the reviews I checked out universally recommended the twin stick control, and I hate those games i.e. Dead Nation, Stardust, etc. So I was super hesitant to buy this game for a while. Almost missed out on a gem... I almost feel guilty for paying only 2 USD.BulletMagnet wrote:The game wasn't originally made with twin-stick controls in mind, so there's no reason to feel obligated to switch, just use whichever you like better.kayakoyaka wrote:My question is if I should get used to the dual stick control? Anyone familiar with a game called Boogie Wings? It's pretty wacky, and there's no hiscore thread for it here. I wonder what the high level scoring tricks of this game are like...

That game where you can fall off your plane and still run and gun and then ride a horse?

Yup, it may be the wackiest shmup I've seen ever. It seemed somewhat unpopular at the time though. Maybe it was a bad year.qmish wrote:That game where you can fall off your plane and still run and gun and then ride a horse?

Funny enough that Data East would use that same idea in Wolf Fang a few years later.
I don't know if Data East ever really did "scoring tricks" and in a game like Boogie Wings I bet it would be dependent on what you threw into what.

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Yeah, the score design was probably conventional, without having much focus put into it. I think it's the actual arcade wizards of the time that would've been responsible for the unintended tricks, finding glitches, or other weird stuff. Basically I think the game is so insane that there must be SOME weird way to abuse it and use it for scoring.
Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
I'm sure most of us have seen the Japanese wiki page that ranks many arcade STGs based on difficulty to clear...has anyone ever though to make a US version based on the opinions of the system 11 members, and possibly include console-exclusive shmups?
this is the page I'm talking about, if you haven't seen it yet:
http://www.wikihouse.com/stg/index.php? ... 0%EC%CD%F7
google does an OK job of translating this page, FYI.

Hey, that looks like the R-type cabinet at Galloping Ghost Arcade! If that's the one I'm thinking of, its an original Nintendo 8-way stick.MOSQUITO FIGHTER wrote:Does anyone know what kind of arcade stick is on this R-Type cab? It's really tiny and has a very short throw. I thought it worked really well and was wondering if it would be possible to install one in my Hori rap. I'm guessing no. But I'd still like to know the type/model of the stick anyway.
more info:

Looks like they might be the same stick thats in many of the nintendo classic arcade cabinets, like Donkey Kong and Mario Bros., but with a different restrictor gate.
Hope this helps!

That was already discussed here
Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
I was working on translating that into a more usuable format for this website (and correcting a lot of the google translate mistakes so that it actually makes sense). Got about 1/3 of it done but I don't have a lot of motivation to continue it right now unless there is real interest in it being done.GGA_HAN wrote:I'm sure most of us have seen the Japanese wiki page that ranks many arcade STGs based on difficulty to clear...has anyone ever though to make a US version based on the opinions of the system 11 members, and possibly include console-exclusive shmups?

I'm not sure it would be realistic to start a list from scratch based off the opinions of the forum because there is very little activity and many of those games aren't very popular at all. It only seems like a handful of games are even popular around here and have active players.
I think a console difficulty rating list would be more possible, and I know there are a few guys around here that have cleared nearly all of the console releases.

Game looks really fun and over-the-top. For some reason most of the music reminds me of something out of a pinball machine (which I'd consider a plus). I need to play this.

That would be amazing. The problem as I see it is that not many people understand the overall difficulty of every game.GGA_HAN wrote:I'm sure most of us have seen the Japanese wiki page that ranks many arcade STGs based on difficulty to clear...has anyone ever though to make a US version based on the opinions of the system 11 members, and possibly include console-exclusive shmups?

I'm sure everyone knows their own games very well, but we're ranking up against all games, and very few if any of the people around have 2-ALL'd some of them.
For instance, the japanese wiki rates parodius da and detana twinbee in the top 5 most difficult of all time (the story behind that is: very ridiculous suicide bullets and hitboxes), but no one here is even close to 2-ALLing either of them, so how can we truly know? If we try to rate the games I'm sure it'll just be list of popular cave games.
Perikles and Pegboy could rate the console games though. They got pretty thorough into all of them.

Any decent vertical monitor recommendations for a newbie? I have a wallmount bracket but the viewing angle on my old Evo monitor is no bueno.

Seahawk's Parodius da run also preview the second loop which he died in first half stage due to the craziness.ProjectAKo wrote:For instance, the japanese wiki rates parodius da and detana twinbee in the top 5 most difficult of all time (the story behind that is: very ridiculous suicide bullets and hitboxes), but no one here is even close to 2-ALLing either of them, so how can we truly know?

The Dell UltraSharp line is usually pretty good, I think. The U2312HM was a common low-lag recommendation and several forum members have them (including myself), but I don't think they're in production anymore so you may need to look into a similar model like the U2414M or U2414H.UFO wrote:Any decent vertical monitor recommendations for a newbie? I was messing around with Garegga and Batrider the other day via emu.
I can see why people like BG, but it is murder on my eyes. I enjoyed Batrider quite a bit, and have yet to try Bakraid.
My question is which one would be better for a (mostly) survival player with zero Raizing experience:
Batrider or Bakraid?

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Bakraid Advanced Course is easier than Batrider Advanced Course, but I'd say their Normal Courses are about equal in difficulty (to me Batrider's easier if you choose a good character). For both courses Batrider's the more fun game to play for survival. Bakraid survival play is pretty meh compared to Batrider and Garegga (which isn't to say it's bad, but it's not quite at the same level) except for the midboss rush in the Cloud stage which is a lot of fun. Batrider's got more style and variety, both visually and in gameplay/level design. It's scoring where Bakraid really comes to life and shows that it's more than just an inferior Garegga/Batrider clone.Stevens wrote:My question is which one would be better for a (mostly) survival player with zero Raizing experience:

go play bakraid for score

To be honest you need to play both. Both are essential.Stevens wrote:I was messing around with Garegga and Batrider the other day via emu.

That being said I used to prefer Bakraid more, but now I feel it and APB are about equal.

Batrider might be a bit more interesting for you starting out, since the wacky bosses (especially the secret ones) and quirky characters and weapons might be more immediately gratifying. That being said, it depends on what you're into.
I'd second that both games (and the whole trilogy) is absolutely essential to all stg players.

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
As a quick addendum to this, if you weren't playing Garegga in tate I'd definitely recommend you do so - I'm not the sort who gets miffed anytime anyone says they're not playing something in its original arcade orientation, but for a sometimes tricky-to-see title like Garegga I'd consider it a near-necessity. Personally the "red ball" mode on the Saturn port (basically the same idea as "Type 2") never helped me much, but see if it does something for you.kane wrote:If you are talking about the bullet visibility problems just try "Battle Garegga - Type 2" also available where you obtained your version. It replaces most of the invisible bullets for bigger & brighter ones.

Yeah but they remove option formation button and always change to special form, didn't know about Saturn port if the Red Ball mode allows it.kane wrote:It replaces most of the invisible bullets for bigger & brighter ones.

Is there anything significant about the number 59630, the score you get for bombing each of the tanks on Batsugun's stage 4 boss and the stage 5 round turrets?

I seem to recall that it's one of those things where if you pronounce those numbers in Japanese it forms a phrase, sort of like the default high score in Gradius can be read as "Konami" (if my memory serves, anyways). As for what exactly it says, I completely forget, heh.

Yeah, it could be a goroawase number.
